For half a second I felt he would simply dislike 'videogame music', but I must say his criticisms were really meaningful and well-thought. It also makes perfect sense too - he clearly enjoys music that breaks away from templates and gets creative with its timing and arrangements, and since video game music needs to be made on a timeline to evoke specific emotions and more importantly *evoke those emotions consistently in most people* , it leans more formulaic by necessity.

HIs criticism of Phantilia's theme was literally just "not to my personal taste" though. I for example dislike Jazz music and find it even more boring than the repetition of common rock music, for example. I greatly prefer heavy metal because it doesn't repeat as much and when the track adds key changes, those changes are always meaningful, unlike Jazz who keeps trying to just evolve one same concept, as if musicians were trying to see how many different attempts they could have on that one theme. That is my personal taste. and so was his opinion also a matter of taste

It moves them, it brings them to tears and is probably way more popular than whatever it is compared against in these videos. To Garth's point about repetition, comfort, and control - I think he's dead on! What he's sort of describing is the gameplay loop - the repetitive series of connected actions that the player makes throughout the game. In Final Fantasy the loop is something like story setup -> exploration and resource gathering -> battle -> climactic battle -> story development. Every iteration of the loop is aesthetically different in one way or another, but the loop is steady. That's why the experience of playing these games is so comforting - you know where you are in the loop and you have the agency to save the world at the very end. I know this video is more about music than about games, but I wonder if Garth would be more interested in games like Inscryption or Breath of the Wild, where the loop is disrupted or more at the player's discretion.
@princeapoopoo5787

Yeah there's something satisfying about that loop to me, that's for sure. Though, as a creative mind, I also love games that are more open ended too. As a brief segway on the repetitiveness conversations, its interesting to note the importance a lot of videogame music being both repetitive, but not too repetitive. A lot of the less stand out music is there for atmosphere and is more or less intended to be heard but not listened to. Something that keeps the atmosphere going and helps keep the player from getting bored, while not being so in your face as to become apparent. That said, you still need just enough variation in the bgm so that it doesn't become apparenty/annoying by not changing enough. That's kinda the magic of most video-game music. Its equivalent a gallery hall for art. Everyone's meant to look at the art, but the gallery still has to look the part. An ugly gallery/sloppy gallery still leads to a unpleasant viewing.

I think the important context is that here they are listening to the music for the music itself. In games as you pointed out a lot of repetition has a point. For example, in Nier, some pieces are extremely repetitive as they layer on more and more elements over the base melody and it makes sense in context. I think from a pure musical perspective it's more difficult to make a repetitive melody satisfying unless you are doing something extraordinary, like telling a time loop story where you need to vary each loop enough so that it doesn't become the same thing, and the shorter the loop is, the more challenging your task becomes.
@DiabloDelMer1
@DiabloDelMer1 Жыл бұрын
@@VaioletteWestover Personally, I don't think that its difficult to specifically make a repetitive song satisfying. Often times, its the duration of a song that has the heaviest impact on its listening value and I've found the biggest 'sin' repetitive music can make when being used as music to actually listen to is it being too long. The longer any song lasts, the more deviation you need in it to make it satisfying to listen to from beginning to end. Music designed to be repetitive is much more limited in the ways it can perform deviation outside of a dynamic context like videogames. I think this is one of the reasons why a lot of videogame music doesn't last much longer then between 2 and 3 minutes. That's just enough time for you to add the musical quirks per subsection of the song to make it interesting, but not so long as to overstay its welcome within a bubble. Not to say extraordinary composers can't easily make a repetitive 8 minute long song that sounds wonderful to listen to. Mick Gordon in particular is quite good at this.

Of course Yu Peng Chen comes through. This was so enjoyable to watch, Garth reflected many of the things that I felt was missing from videogame music that I couldn't quite put my fingers on and he really nailed it. A lot of Genshin music, some Undertale music, have that classical opus feel to them in that the melody extends far beyond a couple phrases like Garth pointed out. It's also why I was never able to enjoy Destiny music even though I acknowledge the high quality of the sound itself, but the underlying melody is very short. I'm a classically trained violinist and vocalist and for me Genshin music has an X factor that I couldn't put my finger on and it's always excited me to listen to it above others. I think after this, I understood also why I felt the way I do as well. So I took a lot away both in terms of criticism and appreciation from garth. I felt like I attended class and I was having fun to the whole time! What a fantastic and valuable resource this is. Thank you both for making this possible! I wonder how Garth would react to something like Jolt in the forest from Sumeru that is all about the repetition and the HUGEEE payoff. Will it be the boring kind of repetitive or the beautiful kind? Haha

Mr Garth’s criticisms on these tracks actually awakened me to why I love video games, and by proxy its music. I tried for example to remove the songs from the context, and in a vacuum, you can start hearing or discerning patterns or repetitiveness, even as a total music noob. Then, I put something like Phantylia’s 3-phase boss theme into the context of star rail and its story. It is just beyond impressive how it captured the encounter, and the Emanator of destruction so well. Also obvious with the chinese-inspired leitmotif, since the battle took place in Xianzhou Loufu. These emotional attachments to the game, therefore its soundtrack, is what truly elevated vgm to the next tier. Technique is one factor of it. The track also needs soul and heart, even if synthesized/ created with assist from machines.

This is interesting because while it’s ok to analyze the music in a vacuum, it definitely should be taken in with the other piece of art that it’s supposed to be enjoyed with, which is the game itself. I understand the criticism for repetitiveness but as a rebuttal, the conext for the music is meant to give you something to recognize and latch onto as the player. In a battle scenario for example, just one repeated segment can be enough to cause players to further engage and go wild with the combat for any game. Sometimes, players may even look forward to the repetitiveness because more often than not, those repetitive segments sound pretty good. They may not evolve the piece but imo, they keep the player grounded and reminds them of why they're even playing to begin with. Just like the question brought about the constant battling perhaps getting tedious, a good music theme will often push that tedium back and make almost every encounter feel new which is something that should only be theoretically possible through gameplay. That's where I think the genius of game music lies. For me, I never once got tired of entering a battle in FF16 or Persona 5 because the battle music was good

So much about how 'Ludwig the Accursed' and 'Ludwig the Holy Blade' made me feel began to make sense once I saw someone point out that the songs are a waltz. As someone who grew up doing traditional Scottish dancing, the songs were hitting a rhythm that was deeply familiar to me but in such a twisted and awful way that I couldn't fathom what I was hearing. Garth reminds me a lot of George RR Martin in the way he was so jaded and 'over' the conventions. On the one hand, it can make for a refreshingly different take (like the grimdark fantasy that Martin pioneered). But it can also ignore the fact that everyone loves the conventions for a reason. People are always going to love a Tolkienian 'good triumphs over evil' story or a repeated four-chord progression, no matter how bored of it your refined tastes become. Was still interesting to hear his perspective and the times that he was surprised and intrigued.

its not necessarily a bad thing. Im not good at music but from a gameplay standpoint, there is a necessity for HSR music to be somewhat ‘boring’ (which from my understanding refers particularly to the music having predictable and repetitive moments) because for turn based games there is a lot of thinking a lot of dead air so they have to account for that in the composition. Samudratha I think is the only moment that comes close. Phantylia's theme is better musically but doesn't have the same punch in the story, no particularly crazy drops, just a solid boss theme. All we need now is a boss fight as good as Phantylia (props to Hoyo for making the game actually challenging during story, I'm so tired of Genshin's story fights being medium difficulty at best) with moments as action packed and dramatic as Cocolia. Considering the Luofu arc isn't over yet, Phantylia's just the "Svarog" penultimate fight and there's more to look forward to down the line.

I really did enjoy Garth's opinions on the pieces you choose. He didn't shy away from posing his thoughts on the pieces, and that's largerly from what he spoke about being critical. As a artist, I understand the importance of a critical eye and being able to voice them with reasons to back up those claims without it being slander. So for Garth its more of a critical ear. I'd love for him to come back and it also might be a great challenge for you to take this experience and see what kind of music might speak to him while also finding tunes that he might really enjoy breaking apart to find the good with in their composition.

Is it weird of me to say this felt like an actual lecture piece from Garth? And I mean that in the best way possible. His criticisms felt very organic and was able to explain his thought process entirely to where I feel like I’ve gained more insight to go, I like this because, or I didn’t think this worked because this, and so on. Sure it is a matter of subjectivity, and at times it’s hard to explain our emotions over pieces, but I think I’ve gained more knowledge about how to judge the things I enjoy, and their faults. Nothing is perfect after all. Cheers Marco, this was lovely.

I think what I love the most about this series is that it really shows how your background and relationship with music changes your point of view and how you experience a song. Not just how having played the game or not changes your impression because of context, or emotional responses, but because your different guests will focus on different aspects of the pieces depending on what the focus of their musical career and background (and listening history) is. I'm especially amused by Die Mittsommernacht-Fantasie, because if you have a classical background, you're hearing those references, and if you work in sound production, you especially enjoy the unusual instrument combinations and melodic changes, but... Y'all... y'all don't even know.... This piece is referencing the Japanese rock/pop genre and subculture visual-kei. It's kinda like a glam rock and goth mix that was/is especially popular with the chuunibyo/"edgy teen" crowd. I hear so much Malize Mizer in this track, and there's a playful kind of... unhinged quality to their music that works perfectly for Fischl. Fantasie always makes me want to hear Gekka no Yasoukyoku (translates roughly to Moonlight Nocturne) or Bois de Merveilles - the first being a tale of a child randomly wandering the forest at night and finding a jester doll in a dusty old shed that tearfully begs the child to bring it to the nearby mansion, where the child finds a girl doll, and then watches the two dolls dance in the moonlight all night; and the second boiling down to "imma sing to the fairies until my voice gives out to beg forgiveness for my sins". It is 100% her aesthetic, and the musical elements and combinations they chose in Fantasie are so on point. ...incidentally, I'm convinced that Squall's character design in FFVIII was inspired by Malice Mizer's Illuminati music video, the similarities to lead singer Gackt are uncanny. Don't, uh, don't look for this music video in public, though. It left a... lasting impression on me in middle school.

What frustrates me to no end is knowing that there'd be THOUSANDS of killer soundtracks from countless games, and there's absolutely no way to cover them all in a video or two. I get thaat awaken is your favorite of the arknights lot, but there are a lot of other amazing compositions from the arknights collection. Just a suggestion. Interesting video, although I feel like he doesn't really appreciate the functional aspects of a video game song (complement the repetitive gameplay loop, provide subtext to a character/event in game).

The last final fantasy game I've played was 4. First played it with my dad as a kid and I'll never forget the opening scene of it with the March Of The Redwings. This powerful and proud almost imperial sounding march. With struggle and crisis but still just oozing power. I'm fascinated by Garth's dismissiveness of the Xenoblade main theme, because I really like that piece, but I think this actually goes back to that community poll Marco put up about context and game music. As I think about that particular song, and when I think about Garth's comments about it being something unimaginative and repetitive, I realized that I actually like the song in *spite* of those things, which I think are technically true. I've heard a lot of music since I first played Xenoblade, and I like most of it far more than I like that song. There are a lot more unique, creative, and higher quality pieces I've found since that time that have eclipsed it in terms of my personal taste, and yet whenever I hear that song, I get extremely emotional. Here we get to context: I think the reason I still like that song is because I fucking LOVE Xenoblade Chronicles in its entirety. That song merely represents all of my positive feelings towards the entire game, and so I think a huge portion of my enjoyment of the song is purely contextual and has nothing to do with my appreciation of the music as such. For someone like Garth to come in and hear that piece, I am not surprised that with his experience and background he found it derivative and boring. For the record, I actually am not a huge fan of Yoko Shimomura in general because I do think a lot of her music sounds very safe and uninspired. However, because of that, if she writes a song for a game that I really love, because her style is so safe and consistent, it's very easy for me to fall in love with a piece of music that represents that game that I really love. She writes songs that are easy to love if the game is something you also love, in my personal opinion. I would say Yasunori Nishiki is also in this category. Octopath's music is very safe, very formulaic, and yet very satisfying if that's all you're looking for. Garth seems like he really is on the hunt for the cutting edge, and it's because his entire life is about music, so he really HAS heard it all before. I KNEW he would love the Fischl piece because that song is VERY creative and does things with instrumentation that you just don't see from other composers. Putting this altogether then, I think if you are a generally accepting person and not overly critical of the music you consume, then there's not any real "enjoyment gap" that context will help you overcome, because you can enjoy something fully without any context in the first place. For someone who IS more critical, though, having context can fill in that gap and bring your emotions more in line with the piece. I relate to Garth a lot because I'm similarly snobbish in a lot of my opinions about music, and I can recognize that a lot of the music I enjoy has very little to do with the music itself and more with the context surrounding the music and the memories it evokes. That's why I generally do not listen to music from games I haven't played, because oftentimes all I hear are the similarities and the motifs that I've heard a thousand times before and it doesn't sound very special. But once I've played the game, all bets are off. It becomes personal at that point, and it's just different. There are only a few occasions where I have heard a game's music first and then felt compelled to play the game afterwards, in fact I think it's only been Persona 5 and Tunic.

I feel like this discussion helps me better see the gap between classical and jazz analysis and progressive music analysis, because the genres have very different purposes. I like how the repetition in progressive house, trance, and a lot of VGM emphasizes the little changes and the sound design/arrangement of the track. Repetition, comfort, and control are things I greatly enjoy in that music as a listener and creator, not just because they serve a video game. It's calming, yet when I want to pay attention to the details, there's still quite a lot to think about. I can't imagine them becoming points of critique, but then, I'm sure some people feel the opposite.

The last track reminds me of the softer moments of Swedish symphonic operatic metal band Therion. In general, they have recorded with a very strong emphasis on real orchestras and male and female choirs as well as solo operatic singers. This is supported then by the band. And what's amazing about theory on is that all of the music is composed by the band. This is not a situation where they hire a composer to write complementary music. Theory on IS orchestra choir, opera and metal combined. ANYWAY, strongly recommend the live recording (video or CD) of "Therion: The Miskolc Experience". There are two sets. The first set is Therion performing popular classical music, and the second set is them performing originals. You can find both on KZbin in good quality. If you like the fusion of contemporary hard rock and metal with classical and opera, then you should give this a listen. I think it's a great starting point, because choosing a particular album otherwise can be difficult.

I'd love to see Marco put some music from more obscure or lesser-known games in these videos, too. For instance: Lost Odyssey. Composed by Nobuo Uematsu, it's a criminally overlooked JRPG still stuck on the 360, and has some of Uematsu's best work. The final boss theme especially, Roar of the Departed Souls, is arguably as good as a classic like One-Winged Angel.

Another great video here. It's definitely interesting to see Mr. Bardsley's opinion on these. His thoughts are very much quite introspective and whilst in some ways fairly atypical of a traditional musician, it's interesting to hear an opinion that his personal taste is more geared towards the experimental side of things. Hmm, if you ever have another opportunity for this with him, maybe it might be good to gauge his interest with something from like Ar Tonelico or even Pokemon. That being said Pokemon music is usually on the more synthetic side of things so he may not like that, but as far as dynamic theming goes, he still might take to something like the Team Plasma Grunt (BW2) or Giratina's battle themes. As for Ar Tonelico, I'd say it'd be great to pivot out of what was in the games themselves but released separately while still being official music. Stuff like Ressikougi Raikoku no Tenshi, Shelanoir's Forest, Infelious Rhaplanca, or Afezeria Harvestastya might fit to his taste like a button.
