As far as your question is concerned with quality: some games age extremely poorly, while others have enough going for them for people to be able to overlook poor graphics/bad gameplay. Dragon Age's strength was never in the graphics for me for example, therefore seeing the poorly aging graphics doesn't matter to me, I just remember it being one of the first games where I could properly bond with my companions, learning what they love and hate, potentially losing them permanently because they hated all of my decisions. The graphics did get better over the years with the new games, but the core remains the same: a deep world with wonderful characters and always with the sense that you're part of something greater.

yeah, "it depends" does fit. Mainly story-driven games tend to age very well, but also a lot of strategy games, while shooters or action games often age less well in my experience. But the old RPG-classics like Dragon Age, Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic, Mass Effect, and so on, definitely are absolutely still playable. Often there also will be a lot of mods written by the community to improve especially older games and add to replayablity

5:23 There are dragons in the game, the leader of the Darkspawn is Urthemial he leads the "Blight" and is one of the 7(?) old god dragons that the Darkspawn find and corrupt. 8:50 That's the main human antagonist, he retreats and the kings and the army get slaughtered, most of the game is trying to get allies together to remove him from power to unite the kingdom to fight the Blight 11:03 That's the player character, your job was to light the beacon and signal the reinforcements (that ran away) you get injured and knocked out and survive the battle - starting the main portion of the game 12:12 It depends on the franchise, Origins is very replayable - many classes and races to chose from, and it still a great RPG/game, some older games are a bit rough like the First Witcher/Mass Effect games, but nostalgia factor can keep you going. That or mods to "fix" the janky aspects help sometimes. But yes some games age well and some dont.

Biggest changes were if you chose mage, it let you skip some part at the mage towere right? It's been so long. Never apologise for LotR jokes, especially because that battle scene really did take a page out of the Helm's Deep playbook. But they pulled it off, even with the limited graphical specs of the time, so I ain't complaining. These old RPGs are beloved mainly for the writing, not for the technical solutions. So, even if the technical details don't age so well, it remains worth going back to. Good writing's timeless. Plus, games of this kind often allow you copious decisions to make to steer the story in various directions which adds to the replayability as well.

So basically for the second video you need bit of a context from the game so here it is: Black haired commander betrays the king (8:28) by signalling retreat instead of attack after you as a player lit the beacon. Later he frames it so that people believe it was your order (which is basically you and one other dude at that point more or less) for the death of the king. He is also a father of the queen so he becomes a regent lord by letting the king die. btw this all happens within first 2 hours of like 25-40 hour storyline
@tehdipstick2 жыл бұрын
The Battle of Ostagar signals the end of the first act of the game. Up until that point you/the player have already been through a smaller story arc which serves as the game's tutorial. You basically spend your time learning about your back story and how the world works, as well as meeting the man who avenged the king after the was killed by the big ogre. He's a member of the Grey Wardens, a group much like the Night's Watch in Game of Thrones. Their purpose is to defend the land against the Blight/Darkspawn. Long story short, you join the Grey Wardens and team up with the king and his army to fight and beat back the Darkspawn at Ostagar, but as you saw the king's right hand man betrays him and retreats, leaving the rest of the king's forces and the Grey Wardens to be slaughtered. At this point your character has to take up the mantle as leader of the Grey Wardens and find a way to unite the different peoples of the land (elves, dwarfs and men) against the Darkspawn while also picking up different individuals as members of your adventuring party along the way. As far as your question about whether older games hold up or not goes... It really depends on the person playing them, and what qualities are important to them. A games visual graphics can be very important to some, for example, so they have a hard time going back to older games with worse graphics and clunkier gameplay. Personally speaking, graphics aren't all that important to me. When I really enjoy a game it's because of the characters and the story, and I find that those usually hold up no matter how old the game is. Mass Effect, which was made by the same studio who made Dragon Age, is still one of my favorite Sci-Fi games that I've ever played. In fact I replayed it recently and still had loads of fun even though the visuals are somewhat dated, and the controls and gameplay is pretty clunky compared to the games that are being released nowadays.

Hey Hannah, You guessed it thats when you take over. The battle of ostagar is considered the end of the prologue, pretty much the rest of the game is getting the band back together and then killing the dragon. And yes there is the expectation for new releases to improve graphically, especially if they release on a new console generation. For example Dragon age 1-2 was Xbox360/Playstation 3, Dragon Age inquisition (aka 3) was Xbox one / PS4. With the increase in processing power you have new limits developers tend to push.

Instead he sounded a retreat because he wanted the king to die. He was suppose to be the one that goes all Gandalf and Rohan at Helmsdeep from the LotR Movies but was like "Nah I'm gonna be an asshole instead." Interesting note about the Hounds, they are Mabari and are actually super smart(THey can actually understand you even if they can only communicate back via barks and what not.) they tend to bond with one partner for life so you can imagine the grief that would cause if your Mabari got killed, or if the Mabari's partner is killed.

The whole of the story of dragon age (like all great Bioware games) comes form the agency of the player to control the story to some degree. The entire experience is really something. It also makes explaining the story difficult. There are hard points that don't change regardless, but so so many character elements have a vast range of arcs. Hell, there is a point where you can just ignore companion characters and leave them to die before even recruiting them. To explain some of what is happening in the scene, The Grey Wardens with the local King are fighting the beginnings of a Blight (This is when an Archdemon - A Darkspawn Dragon - has come from beneath the earth with nigh on endless hordes of monsters). The local Grey Warden leader is a man named Duncan (the two sword wielding, older chap). He recruits your character to the fight. The Battle was meant to be a major blow to the oncoming horde, but because of the betrayal of Logain (The general of the army that was supposed to come when the beacons were lit), they were left to die on the field. The rest of the game is your character and their companions running around the map, gathering as many allies as you can to fight the Blight, as well as dealing with the political turmoil and succession crisis, on top of numerous individual character stories. Your personal story can have a great deal of variation as well. Playing as a Dwarven Noble (For Example) you will be encouraged to act one way with the Dwarf story arc, but if you play a low born Dwarf the game makes a really strong case the other way. Then there is Dragon Age 2...we don't talk about Dragon Age 2 no, no, nooooo. (I kid)

To give my perspective on your question: 1st, you were right, the answer is "it depends" lol. So the real question is what does it depend on, right? I've found that much like with books, video games can have something called replayability. Some games, especially RPGs (Role Playing Games) work like a Choose Your Own Adventure story. Thus, we have a multitude of possible branching paths at crucial moments of the story progression; and a player might wonder "what if I had chosen differently?". Sometimes, a better understanding of the game allows you to replay it with new insights. And yes, sometimes it's just plane old nostalgia for a game you really loved. The best games for this, are the ones with a really good story, world-building, etc... The ones that allow for perfect immersion into the world it contains.

When it comes to games and aging, the answer is... well, it depends. You can think about old games in a similar way to old movies. For example, when you take two films from the time when CGI was at its very early stage and one of them was full of badly executed unrealistic CGI, while the other didn't use it at all, we'd definitely say that the one without CGI aged better - at least visually. I see video games in similar way. Some games from 90s and late 80s were very innovative and tried to be more ambitious. Sure, they paved the way for progress in game development and made modern gaming possible, but they aged extremely badly, some of them are even almost unplayable because of poor UI or some gameplay decisions. At the same time, games that kept it simple (even if it was this kind of simplicity that made difference when it comes to game development) are still totally playable even now. For example, Super Mario Bros, Sonic The Hedgehog, Galaga or Chip's Challenge are still fun, while first Wasteland and Darklands require lots of patience for this type of gaming experience. And same when it comes to graphics: I think that early 3D games are much uglier than 2D titles developed at similar time. When it comes to writing, it's kinda different. There were already games with extremely well written storylines in late 80s / early 90s, but the problem was with execution. For a time, there weren't even technological options for executiong recorded dialogues or immersive cutscenes. With more story-driven games, most of the story and dialogues was just supposed to be read by the player 'till sometime around early 2000s. For example, Planescape: Torment (form 1999) had thousands of pages script containing 800 000 words and only extremely small fraction of it was recorded as audio (and even less was used for cutscenes). And it was the same story as with gameplay and graphics: when delivery of a story started to be more developed, some games suffered - for example, many games started having very simplistic dialogues (because it was technologically and usually financially impossible to record as much dialogues as developers wanted in the first place) and very cheesy cutscenes (because animation technologies weren't as good back then). I think that Fallout is a good example of how storytelling in games is aging differently than gameplay and visuals. First two games had extremely well written storylines, even though you had to just read and imagine most of it. At the same time, it's graphics wasn't too good (but not very bad either) and gameplay aged TERRIBLY (and was a 100% child of its time). Later games have better, more modern graphics and gameplay, but *I think* that writing was much better in first two games, even though they didn't have means to deliver it the same way as developers do in modern games. *I would say* that modern gaming came to life in early 2010s. For example, Witcher 3 (2012) looks only slightly worse than modern games, while writing (with all of its delivery and execution), gameplay, cutscenes and sound are as good (or often even better) than in many of new game releases. First Dragon Age (2009) looks much worse, but it's still much more similar to modern games than to games released in the first half of 00s. Of course, some technological aspects, e.g. sound, evolved into their modern forms much earlier (I would say mid-90s?), but I think that in general, since late 00s, gaming technology is just evolving slower and slower each and every day (but I guess it's the same with all technologies for around a decade).

Games evolution slowing is based on consoles. Basically, pc gamers are waiting for the next generation of consoles to come out so games can be improved. The emphasis on games being playable on both console and pc to reach a wider audience means the developers can make more money, but they have to base the game off of what both the average gaming pc and the console can handle. There used to be only pc games and only console games, so they developed based on the capabilities of each. I fully expect games to have another leap forward now that a new console generation has come out and caught up to what a decent gaming pc is capable of handling. Whether that leap will be a giant leap forward or more of a modest hop is something we just have to wait for. Remember the book that came with Starcraft? That thing was thick! And only the first twenty pages of so were on the game setup and basic navigating the GUI. The rest was story and background. I used to bring that book to read in the car for long trips it was so good. And Starcraft had relatively good videos for it's time. But there was just too much history and explanations to fit into the basic game, they had to put heaps of it in the game book, so they might as well make it a good read. Which they did.

Just so you know that man who betrayed them and retreated was Loghain, one of the antagonists. He did that so the king would die and he could make a claim for the throne. When that beacon on top of the tower was lit, his army was supposed to charge into the flank of the darkspawn, it likely would have allowed them to overwhelm the spawn.
@scottmcintyre28092 жыл бұрын
The battle is right near the start of the game, basically the end of the "tutorial" section. The plan was the King holds the Darkspawn on that front, then the fire on top of the tower signals for the black haired guy to sweep in with his army on the darkspawn's flank and finish them off. But black haired guy was King's father-in-law, and thought that if King was gone he could convince his daughter, in her heartbreak, along with the various nobles to give him the crown. Your character finds out at the start of the battle that Darkspawn have gotten into the tower and someone needs to fight through them to light the beacon, so you do that, then this cutscene happens, and the beacons are lit but Rohan doesn't answer. As to the Dragon, the Dragon here is the bad guy, basically the big boss of the Darkspawn.

It is named like that because the dragons reappeared at the start (and yes the game has dragons). And yes, they are losing, that is the tragedy at the start of the game. The guy that walked away was supposed to flank but decided everything was lost that day and betrayed the King (the one killed by the ogre). The players character was tasked to light the beacon to trigger the reinforcements (does it, but is knocked out in the process). Edit: Loved lotr jokes, dont stawp (it fits really well)

Even though Dragon Age might be a bit dated, one thing that makes this game feel so good and timeless to me, are the facial expressions. As a visual medium, it's very important for building up that emotional connection between players and characters. Everytime I saw any of the cinematics or dialogues, the expressions my character made, even though he didn't speak, made me feel what it should be feeling. And that enhances the story so much.

The dragon part of dragon age is the whole game developing toward it. Like the whole game builds toward the fight with "the blight" which is the name of the darkspawn army that has found and corrupted one of the dragon gods sleeping underground (it's happened a couple times now) turning it into an archdemon. There's also like 5 other dragons you can fight in the game, usually at the end of really good side adventures, or in one case a big reveal of a conspiracy to keep one captive under a city.

Glad you gave Dragon Age a try. It is one of best game series of all time. Its is a Dark Fantasy series so alot of grim stuff in the game however the writing is top tier with amazing characters and great storylines. The tree games take place over a time of around 10 years and tells the story of Thedas and all of the countries within it. The game is called Dragon Age because every 100 years the Divine (Fantasy Pope that is always a woman) calls a new age for the next 100 years, She called this one the Dragon Age. The dude that got peppered with arrows is your player character (you can make your own choosing race and gender). The Original Dragon Age: Origins came out 13 years ago in 2009 so the graphics have aged a bit. In it you play as Grey Warden trying to stop the Fifth Blight in a country that has labeled you a criminal. Dragon Age 2 looks better because of the change of art style and is also a great game. In it you play as a human that fled from blight and went north to the Free Marches. It details your story from rags to riches as you become an instrumental part of the worlds story Dragon Age: Inquisition is the final game and looks much better. In it you make your own character and deal with the events that happened at the end of the second game as the world is falling apart as demons are falling from the literal sky. Highly recommend you look at more Dragon Age stuff. Its awesome! Yes!! I have played all 3 Dragon Age games and I will definitely play the next but no, playing the newer games - at least with this series and Mass Effect ( for me anyway) doesn’t steer me away from the original. The first game will always hold a special place in my heart and I will always go back to it. Partly out of nostalgia but also because the story - and the character you play in the game - the grey warden. I love my wardens. I’ve played every race and every background. You can play as male or female and you get to make decisions along the way the will have some sort of affect on the other games. Dragon Age is chef’s kiss! 😊😊

Quick context Robed guy (you) (yep good job guessing, Hannah!) at very end of the second cutscene are supposed to light the tower beacon thing, which signals for reinforcements. Except the guy in charge of the reinforcements bailed cuz evil scheme to let the king (gold armor guy) die. Tower beacon then gets overrun and you get knocked out, which signals the actual start of the game (yes, all of what you watched is just intro stuff). As for your question, I'd say depends on the game. Dragon Age is very story-driven cuz it's an RPG so yeah I'd slog through the dated controls cuz I'm in it for the story. It's actually incentivized in Dragon Age cuz you can import your save into the second game so that it reflects the choices you made in the first game.

The extent to which the quality of the visuals are tied to the quality of the game really depends on the genre. For me, if the draw to the game is for the story, if it has a strong or compelling narrative, the visuals don't really matter at all. I still go back and replay games that are 20 years old on occasion, if the story is a worthwhile experience. If the game has no story to speak of, things like first person shooters and sports games, once the visuals have fallen behind the games are essentially abandoned in mass. I don't know of anyone who goes back to play old games of these types once they become out dated. Dragon Age is a good story, glad to see you react to the opening bit.

Context: The intro shows Duncan (the black ponytail guy from the intro) talk about how in the past a group (called the grey wardens) was established from people of all kinds of backgrounds to defeat the first "blight" which means an attack by dark spawn (orc like creatures) lead by a corrupted god (corrupted dragon thus the game title). As its been centuries since, the grey wardens who nowadays deal with straggling dark spawn aren't held in that high of a regard anymore. The game begins with your character origin (thus the sub name of the game) depending on what species/abilities you choose. All of which end up with Duncan recruiting you in to the grey wardens and bringing you to Ostagar. There you officially join and as a newbie get the mission to light the beacon at a tower to signal the reinforcements to attack. This starts off the "Battle at Ostagar" video which cuts off at 8:21, where you see the player character (in this case a mage with a blue hood) just before they go to light the beacon. At this point you and some companions battle up the tower as its been overtaken, eventually getting to the top and lighting the beacon. Here is where the second part of "Battle at Ostagar" video starts where you see the reinforcements leader Loghain who looks at the beacon and instead of charging tells his men to retreat and leaves the battle. Its why towards the end of the video a wounded and exhausted Duncan looks up at the beacon which is clearly lit realizing that they've been abandoned. And you see your character being knocked out in the last seconds. Yet you luckily get rescued This is where the game really opens up and you now having to rebuild an army to fight the blight, while at the same time try to deal with Loghain who proclaimed himself the new king and branded your order as traitors.

Dragon Age. Such a Masterpiece. I can't even remember how many times I replayed this game. And also Dragon Age 2. To answer your question, I sometimes find it difficult to play older games because the graphics just aren't up to date anymore. But there are games where the story being told is just so great that I can overlook it. Like here Dragon Age, Witcher or Vampire: The Masquerade.
@ninah53242 жыл бұрын
I apologize if this has already been said but one of the great appeals of dragon age is that your decisions in the first game carry through to the other games. Something you did in the first game could affect how the story unfolds in the second and third games. It definitely made me go back to the first game and make different decisions just to see what the affect was in dragon age 2 and 3.

I already commented on this one but you asked a bit about going back and playing old games, and how people get enjoyment from that. Great question! Generally, it's not lost on gamers that older games look and feel pretty dated. Even the best of them, Dragon Age: Origins included. However, there's a lot that goes into a game's feel, look, and design that goes well beyond just the graphics quality themselves. A game can have undeniable quality to it that transcends the visuals. Dragon Age is a great example; it has a very hooking story, a robust character customization and progression system, lots of "Choose Your Own Adventure" style dialogue options where your choices actually have serious ramifications on the outcome of the game and the state of the world in later installments to the series, and a surprisingly in-depth tactical combat system. Despite the fact that it does look and feel a bit clunky, those aspects of a game are very superficial and rarely speak to the overall quality of what you're playing. So, in other words, a person can easily go play Dragon Age: Origins from 2008 in 2022 and still have an absolute blast doing it, so long as they care about more in their experience than the pure quality or modernity of the visuals. Think of it like watching an old movie with special effects that are, by today's standards, a little dated. Like Jurassic Park or Star Wars. Both excellent movies, but both also clearly products of their time. Does not detract from their quality one bit.

In case this helps connect some dots, Dragon Age is made by BioWare, the same company that made Mass Effect. These games are roleplaying experiences first and foremost, usually with interesting dialogue trees, branching narratives, and multiple endings. The animation and gameplay are more than a little clunky, but the writing - especially the character relationships - is top notch. Normally I'd recommend some gameplay series here, but those are absurdly long for this game (Dragon Age: Origins has an average time-to-finish of 40 hours, not including Let's Player commentary), so instead I'll recommend Many A True Nerd's "Can You Beat Mass Effect Without Any Friends?" series (3 videos, total less than 1 hour). Since these videos are all about character relationships and how the games handle narrative differences to funnel players to the same plot points and same set-pieces, it might provide some good insight on the type of writing that goes into these branching roleplaying games (as well as some specific plot holes in the Mass Effect series, and the limitations of reasonably-branching narratives). For context, the king assembled the nation's armed forces for a frontal assault against a hordes of literally millions of demonic orcs BECAUSE HE THOUGHT IT WOULD MAKE A COOLER LEGEND. Predictably when they were slaughtered, the older dark-haired man (and hero of the nation's revolutionary war) retreated with his elite division rather than letting them be butchered like the rest, leaving the king to die. The story intentionally makes it difficult to tell if this retreat was a betrayal for ambition or a pragmatic tactical move

Dragon Age is a really good game series. I’ve played a bit of all 3 of them throughout the years but recently I regot the games for my computer and have been sitting down to actually fully play them. That battle scene would definitely be a lot more emotional than how you acted now if you were actually playing it trust me it’s more shocking when you are there. Also when it comes to older games. If it’s good it’s good. I enjoy things that I enjoy, that’s all I can really say. But if there is any story driven game I could recommend to someone like you it would be dragon age but also it can be difficult and stuff. It is worth it though for the characters and story IMO.

People go back to play earlier RPG games that have good stories because they are playing for the story, not the graphics. As long as the gameplay isn't terrible, the UI (User Interface) can hinder some people's experience, but you generally put up with it in old games to play the story. Dragon Age Origins, this game, is one such title. For many, out of three dragon age games, this one still holds up to this day.

12:22 Quick answer is: yes Long answer: A good sequel/series of games is like a conversation between the player and the developer. Oh remember that cool castle you got to visit in the first game? Look who gets to play a side quest in that very castles glory days per npc flash back. Oh yea about that one companion that didn't stand out well ........that was now on purpose because their real focus was helping the main character in the next game. There's also that strong feeling feeling of seeing the timeline of characters you know and love. Like watching your favorite witty one liner man be king when everyone knows he rather live out his days annoying mages like back in the good ol days If you can't tell I love the dragon age series and would love more people to get into it (you can watch the game cutscenes as a non gamer) also dragons are kinda a big deal in dragon age like also deified jerks. If you ever come across one in that universe you either messed up bad or looking for a problem that should be left alone

Normally they quality of games become better as in visually and comfortability through sequels ir prequels and so forty. Most games age well, especially in medieval games like Dragon Age. The reason people revisit is to reexperience story. I've played all 3 of the Dragon Age games(origins, 2, and Inquisition, which is also the order they were both meant to be played and released). People want to reexperince the game mostly for story, although it's common to replay to try a different way to fight. For the Dragon Age games, they have multiple endings depending on romances or final decision choices. But the plot alone is fantastic which is why most people revisit it.
@Axetwin2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Ostagar fell to the Darkspawn. The blonde guy that got squeezed to death was the King of Ferelden. The dark haired guy that sounded the retreat is the King's father-in-law. The plan was for him to bring his army in on the flank of the Darkspawn. Instead, he left for 2 reasons. 1. He didn't believe this was a real blight, and thus this battle wasn't worth his time. And 2. by letting the King die, he was able to declare himself as King Regent and rule since the King had no heirs of his own. There's a bit more to the second part involving getting rid of the line of succession, but that's the general gist. There are Dragons in this game, and none of them are friendly.
@demonchild3272 жыл бұрын
To be fair, these are in-game cinematics. The first one is the intro cinematic so all the context is there, but for the Battle of Ostagar, there’s a good deal of gameplay inbetween, so you’re missing context this way. One critical bit is that the fire atop that tower was the signal for additional allied forces to ATTACK. Instead the traitorous general abandons the king and pulls his forces out, as seen in the cinematic.
@oskarbondesson49362 жыл бұрын
I am so happy to see dragon age content! This is my favorite game series. You should really watch the cinematic trailer as well. If you want more after that the second game has cut scenes that manages to tell a coherent story without getting too confusing and a awesome cinematic trailer. To answer your question, it is like you said, it depends. Many games are limited by their time but there are a few that had good and well polished mechanics that are still good today. I would say that Dragon age Origins is one such game. A bit is probably nostalgia but i would say that the writing, mechanics and design is so well done that it still holds up. The graphics can be the only hindrance as it obviously looks aged but even that is not bad. If mechanics were good and has not changed dramatically in later editions, you can easily revisit an old game i´d say.

For your question, its generally way easier to get back into older game if you already played it at its time. And some of them were just better than next ones, despite graphic improvements. For example, some Total War games have more active players than many released after them becouse people still like them more. Age of Empires 2 is most popular currently, even with 3 and 4 released. Heroes 3 are most popular in the series, even though its from 1999 and 4 more were released after it. Now that i think about it, its generally strategy game players that dont care about graphics but interesting gameplay, for other games its more rare.

I first played dragon age (origins) in 2013 after picking it up by chance in a game store that was closing down. I had 0 expectations but today it's my #1 favourite game serier followed closely by Mass Effect. the old graphics and janky animations don't bother me at all and I have worked in game development as a graphics artist which both makes me appreciate what they were able to do at the time and see more of what they did wrong, lol. but the truth is if a game has good story telling, a bomb soundtrack and compelling characters then I would rather spend 200 hours modding it to look decent than pick up another game which is visually pleasing but has 0 depth. One interesting thought that hit me watching your channel is how older video games like this got you hooked as a player on a very personal level which I think is better experienced "in person" so to say, by playing the game yourself rather than watching someone else doing it. Even though there are cutscenes you can watch, they're not like the cinematics of modern game universe like LoL, Overwatch etc. where they're like a movie that carries the game's lore on their own, or even create lore that is absent in the game itself (applies to both examples). Rather in games like DA and ME I definitely think cutscenes were something exciting, but often when lacking the context of what happened before or after with your own character that you'd spent 20+ hours with you won't get the same impact at all. Rant over anyway play Dragon Age, I still replay all 3 games once a year and eagerly wait for news of DA4, the game world is HUGE and if you get into it you can spend forever there!
@yoonglebellz2 жыл бұрын
+ I think most dragon age fans are also lotr fans so I don't mind all the jokes at all lol. I'm 100% sure they took a lot of inspiration from lotr when creating the dragon age world. AND fun fact, in Thedas (short for THE Dragon Age Setting and the name of the world) they give each "age" a title to record in history based on events that occurred and marked the number of years that age spans. So for example they had the Golden age, Divine age, Exalted age, the Blessed age etc and during the games setting there is of course the Dragon Age! Named that way because dragons are making a comeback after being hunted to near extinction for centuries before. So yes, there be dragons in Dragon Age, but they're not as critical to the game plot as the title might imply
@dj_daem0n Жыл бұрын
There are dragons in this game, I swear! lol One interesting piece of lore from this game, what you would think of as a traditional looking dragon would be known as a "HIGH DRAGON". According to the game, all HIGH DRAGONS are female. They only grow to towering sizes in order to accommodate the space to produce dragon eggs. Fully developed males of their species grow into DRAKES. Similar but substantially smaller in size (on all fours they are as tall if not taller than most humans) and without the wings of their female counterparts.
@2pac2772 жыл бұрын
The answer to your question is yes quality does change as newer technology comes out. With that said it also has to do with quality of story telling and how it carries over from the previous game to the next game and how the lore all ties in together to make a complete story. Much like any other source of immersive story telling some games hold up to the test of time even if the graphics are outdated and become a classic and in some cases actually end up being better than their sequels much like movies and book.

While I'm glad you saw the cutscenes, a lot of this game's story is told through in-game dialog, where you walk around in the world and talk to different characters. You get to know them, so the cutscenes become a lot more meaningful. Enough nickpicking. Still fun to watch your reactions, as always. :)

To answer your question the quick answer is "it depends". Usually with story driven RPG games the graphics and actual visual aspects of the gameplay usually improves drastically. The story and depth of characters and customisation usually ends up taking a hit. Reason is, with games - much like film, the bigger the budget the more likely the produces slap time constrains and restrictions and usually the games become less of a passion project and more just a machine to pump out visually pleasing and time-killing games. Dragon Age funnily enough is the epitome of this. The first game animation and graphics wise looks dated as hell but it is the only game in the trilogy that I ever come back to due to the freedom in customising your characters stats and the story being far more engaging. The newer games you'll end up spending an hour straight collecting berries to help some rando farmer whilst the main plot is telling you that the world is ending and time is of the essence. There's a lot more filler for the sake of filler.

Dragon Age Origins was one of the best roleplaying games ever and a curse on its series. They've made two other Dragon Age games so far and both were worse. It's called Dragon Age because in the world dragons were thought extinct but returned, even though they don't play much of a role in the game's storyline. Grey Wardens might seem like mythical heroes, but they are more like the Night's Watch in Game of Thrones. They recruit outcasts and criminals and infuse them with an overdose of Darkspawn blight which either leads to a painful death or a few decades of immunity to it. At some point they will end up corrupted so they go hunting for Darkspawn to be killed in combat instead of having to be put down. They also technically count as Darkspawn which makes them the only people capable of killing in Archdemon. If you kill one it's soul goes into the nearest Darkspawn. If the nearest Darkspawn is a Grey Warden the souls annihilate each other. And don't make me start about the traitor that retreated at Ostagar.😁

The second clip is a little confusing. It’s starts off with the battle beginning. After which, your character is suppose to head to the tower and light a fire to signal a second attack. But the guy in charge of the second attack orders the retreat, betraying the king. Then the army is overrun, the king and veteran Grey Warden are killed. Finally, it cuts back to your character in the tower when your position is overrun by Darkspawn.

There is game mechanics and graphics. Graphics is just pixels, but mechanics, it's deeper. Like in real life, there are board games, card games, group games, camping games, school yard games, and such that are fun and ever-lasting throughout history without graphics. Not to mention there are stories, emotions, and characters. I finished some games because I wanted to spend more time with them, not because the games are fun.

One of my absolute favorite games ever your starting point in the game depends on your race and back ground you can be a human noble or human mage, dalish elf (woodland elves) , or slave elf, noble dwarf or caste dwarf (poor exiled) what starting point you choose affects the start of your game and some of the dialouge options in the game dragon age 2 is pretty good but its already set in canon that human male mage is canon where in the first and third games its completely up to you how you control the story

Those dogs or mabari are wardogs on steroids, the people of that place had them as companion animals in almost every home, and the darkspawn's blood is toxic, so those dogs either died in agony from the blood or lucked out and gained immunity like a grey warden who drank it did. Though surviving it only delays your death as you go mad in time, the cinematics and cutscenes were very good for the time too.

it aged well, personally the quality and by that I mean the depth of the development is superb in the first game from all 3 of them that were released. i often go back to play it because of the variety and mini surprises that seem to always be waiting for you even if say you decided to cheat your way - in one of the dialogues (with a powerful witch) she realizes it and gives a completely different response - like a "hello" from the developers who said "we know what you're doing and we'll allow it... for now" LOL - it's super interesting even if you repeat it several times. Due to backstories alone which play a significant part in your personal progression like in D&D you can play it and feel fresh/new at least 6 times, I replayed 4-5 times from beginning to the end... couldn't finish the dwarf royal background but that says something to the amount of detail put into the game so lovingly. this is one of the best RPG genre fantasy game out there, the other being the Witcher games (but it is less RPG in comparison since you only play for Geralt, no creating of your own unique character) and Divinity Original Sin 2 (less interesting if you have tried Dragon Age Origins from plot viewpoint but has great action in comparison).

You don't need to watch this... just some additional informations: The Arch-Demon that drives the Blight forward (in this game) is sort of a Dragon. Also we will meet some other Dragons and Dragon-like Creatures. The fire on top of the tower was lit by the player - it was a sign for the General to attack... exactly THAT General who saw the signal-fire and promptly ordered retreat. Not optimal. A fairly big part of the game is dealing with that guy - mobilizing his own land against him and such.

Hi HannaH. In response to your question: games age like... all over the place. I suppose like every other form of media. There's the technical aspects that could ruin going back to them as much or as little as dated special effects would do with an old movie (like some puppets you can tell they're puppets but still they don't ruin it for you, and some CGI you can tell it's CGI regardless of how old it is, sometimes), and then there's the rest of the ways you engage with the game (which are usually what makes or breaks them). In gaming culture we have this very colourful name for people who only care about graphics and whose criticism based on that alone do a diservice to some games, we call them graphics "gardening tools", let's say. With the progression of the quality of games... we shouldn't take anything for granted. Sometimes we experience that with higher investment put into technical aspects to make a AAA superproduction a lot of other compromises have to be made. Usually features, depth, and freedom are cut. When game length is not cut also, you can also expect a lot less hands-on care put into it and more artificially tacked on tricks to waste your time without putting in the effort. Sometimes games come that look technically worse than earlier games due to whatever problems during production, and some others, through stylised visual styles are atemporal. But more than anything, a well made game that respects your time, your intelligence, your investment into it and by buying it and has soul will be forgiven for the shortcomings due to their age. There are games not only remembered fondly due to nostalgia and rose tinted glasses, but games we will replay for decades, which is a testament to their quality.

For me and many others, Dragon Age was our first encounter with lgbt romance in videogames. And not just side characters, like, protag romances

Dragon Age: Origins is literally my favorite game of all time, it released back in 2009 so the graphics are not that great but the gameplay is what shines with this title, the story is fantastic and the characters are incredible! You should check out Morrigan she is amazing best girl. I play this game at least once a year and yes it is dated but still fantastic. You should check out the cinematic for Dragon Age: Inquisition which is the 3rd game in the series and Dragon Age 4 is coming out hopefully next year. Finally yes there are dragons.

Think of games as movies, if you watched the first movie of the franchise and 10 years later you still enjoy the 10th movie or what ever, then going back to it will definitely feel nostalgic if you are a fan of the franchise. Now if you watched the first movie out of curiosity and didn’t really enjoy it then coming back to it 10 years later won’t have the same effect. It all depends on the significance it had on your life and weather or not you enjoyed it enough for it to be kept as a good memory. Hope it answered your question! ☺️

Yes we definitely come here for the confusion. As for games aging well some do some don't, when going back people tend to expect the limitations of graphics for the time so most of it comes down to how well the system plays rather than how it looks

Obviously the graphics in games are the most noticeable things when it comes to the age of a game. Certain styles of graphics tends to age more gracefully than others. The things I tend to notice when I go back to games I haven't played in a long time tends to be the controls being more clunky than I remember them to be compared to newer games.
