14:48 basically yes. The game has a multiplayer system that allows you to call other players to help you overcome challenging areas or strong enemies. For example I can leave a summoning sign on the ground in front of a tower and other players in the world will see the glowing mark I've left just before the tower. If they want they can touch the sign and I'll be summoned to their game to help them. 21:48 ahahah don't worry, the story is very confusing so it's normal. Even hardcore fans had the same reaction when this trailer came out. The game relies a lot on silent narration and visual storytelling, basically the developers leave a lot of information sprinkled in bits and pieces everywhere in the game and they trust the players to be curious enough to search through every nook end cranny to discover all the secrets. You could say that understanding the story is very much a "game withing the game". Of course there are several wonderful KZbinrs who enjoy compiling all the important information in easy to follow videos. When it comes to story & lore for these game the "go to guy" for most of the community is VaatiVidya.

Malenia the Severed, also called "Blade of Miquella" and the "Goddess Of Rot" is an optional Boss in Elden Ring, located in a secret area and she's FAR AND AWAY the hardest Boss in the game. She heals whenever she hits you and even does when you try blocking her attacks, she has a move called the Waterfowl Dance (an insta-kill shot if you get caught by it) and she has two phases. Few players have beat her, but this dude DESERVES all the acclaim in the world for beating her without taking damage. The Summoning mechanic in FromSoftware's games allows players to summon NPCs and other players to help them out, yeah. Other people in the comment section have explained this better than me.

In Dark Souls games you can leave a small "beacon" on the ground that will show up in the games of other players. If they see it, they can activate that beacon and it will transport them into your world to help you with a boss. These beacons are called "Summon Signs" because they appear usually in the forms of small scribblings on the ground.

From Software loves making cryptic stories. The confusion is part of this. They let things for you to interpret and only leave you hints in the game. 13:32 just a note on Alexander. He's a character (one of my favourites) who you can meet on your journey in Elden ring. Alexander is a giant jar with arms and legs. Some notes on Malenia, Blade of Miquela’s infamy. Her fight is considered brutally difficult by most if not all players. She can potentially attack over 20 times in a single combination and with little to no warning at times. *She could kill you with 3 hits.* Even with armor. In LMSH’s case, she needs *less than 1* to kill him. Even worse, because the person who brought him in also brought in another player, the game has balanced the fight to make her have *several times more health and defense* than if she was fought alone. So LMSH fought a boss several times harder than she normally already is…which is already a ludicrously difficult fight…without *ONCE* taking a hit. He’s a legend for a reason.

Letmesoloher is pretty much always available for a summon and ALWAYS to help with Melania who apparently is the hardest boss to beat. The fact that he decides to help people out wearing just his undies and a jar on his head just adds to the ridiculousness (and wholesomeness) of it all.

Summon Signs are kinda like phone a friend, yeah. Some players like to aid others for specific rewards, to do that they write their name in gold text on the ground in certain places around the world. Another player can then activate an item which allows him to see everyones summon signs appearing as the gold text on the ground. They can then pick and choose who they want to summon to help them with certain objectives. The summoned player is returned to his own world if the host dies or if the task is complete, granting him a couple rewards. Theres also the red summon signs which is meant for PvP. You can basically summon another player to fight you and the winner gets the same reward as the gold summons. There is one last type of summon, but they do not appear as summon signs, they do not write on the ground and get picked. These are the blue summons. They interract solely with the PvP side of it. The red summons can be summoned by a red summon sign, but they might also invade your game against your will, though this can only happen if you already have summoned a gold summon sign friend. This invaders goal is to kill the host and the gold summon friend. Blue summons however are there to counteract that. They will counter invade invaders. They're basically just gankers since they turn a 1v2 into a 1v3. So while invaders might seem like the bad guys in that they invade other peoples games, they're always at such a disadvantage that they really deserve victory if they succeed since they always have to defeat at least 2 players alone, sometimes up to 4 or even 5. This sort of summoning based multiplayer is unique to FromSoft games, so Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and so on.

Well I'm late but whatever. At 7:11 you can see he's not breaking a sweat because he's managing his stamina perfectly (the green bar in the upper left corner). In Elden Ring to prevent being hit by an opponent, you have two options : rolling or blocking. Both deplete your stamina bar that you need to run, jump, roll, block or attack. Rolling gives players a small invicibility window allowing them to dodge attacks if timed right. It becomes pretty easy to want to spam rolling, only rendering you without stamina and therefore extremely vulnerable. Same goes with attacks, if you spam too much, you'll be rendered defenseless. This is even more of a feat considering Malenia is a boss that never lets you rest as she's hyper agressive and has probably the least dodgeable attacks of the whole game.

18:20 The short and skinny of it is: The God-Queen who ruled the world vanished, her successor was murdered, all of her demi-god off-spring started massive, devastating wars to try and claim her crown. These wars were so massive and brutal that they basically destroyed the entire world and even left the world of the afterlife in ruins. Each of these demi-gods now inhabit this afterlife realm and posses a shard of the shattered Elden Ring. Whoever claims all shards of the ring would then be entitled to re-take the throne of the lost god-queen. Or at least that's what I've been able to gather from what I know so far; the story in these games can be kinda vague.

Giant dad was another legend in the original Dark Souls, he's very similar to Let me solo her, but instead of helping with a boss, he helps with enemy players that could invade your world. How summoning works is by using an item that places a sign on the ground, other players can then see this sign and choose to summon you from it, but there are also other items where you can invade other players world's with the goal of defeating then for a reward (there are many factions and items that can change how summoning/invading works, but these are the basics)
@NaniBu2 жыл бұрын
Haven't seen it answered here so basically summon signs are where a player can leave a white (usually) sign on the floor. Then that sign appears in other players worlds and if they activate it the player who left the sign is summoned to the world. Usually used to help through tough areas and particularly bosses. Once the area boss (or the host) is defeated the summons dissapear. It's a unique system compared to a lot of cooperative games because it encourages strangers to help one another rather than the standard play with your friends formula (which you could still do in this game to an extent). Oh and only the host gains progress from summoning the summons just get some extra exp basically.

"Giantdad" was a famous PVP build in the grandfather of Elden Ring, Dark Souls. It was called Giantdad because it revolved around two particular pieces of equipment - the Giant's Armor, which has high poise so that the wearer doesn't flinch when they're hit, letting them use slower, more powerful attacks without risk of getting interrupted. The Mask of the Father is a helmet that lowers your equipment load, which allows you to move around more quickly and have a longer period of invulnerability when dodge-rolling. This was combined with a powerful weapon known as the Chaos Greatblade to create a build that balanced avoiding damage, reducing damage, and dealing damage in a way that most players couldn't counter.

to help you out. in the game, you can write your character's name on the floor. this name will be visible to other players looking for help. the can click on your sign and call you to help out against a boss. for Millennia. she is the hardest boss in the game. she heals herself when she hits you, so blocking her attacks is a bad idea and she is very difficult to dodge. her attacks are called water flow because they are graceful, move in a smooth flooding motion, and can speed up when needed. this makes doing her almost impossible. there are players the have fought her over 30 times and lost each time.

To make bit as easy as possible. Elden Ring is a roleplaying game with a lot of combat. You fight normal enemies and also bosses who have crazy looks, attacks etc. Malenia counts as the hardest boss in the game and many players need 20+ attempts until they finally beat her. Even though the game is mostly a single player game - you play alone - there are also some multiplayer aspects. For example players can put down a sign which indicates that they want to help with a boss fight. Others players can use the sign to summon the player who then fights along them for this boss battle. The helping players is literally summoned to their single player session.

14:46 You pretty much nailed it. FromSoftware games are single player games for the most part, but playing while connected online lets you see messages left behind by other players, which helps if you end up lost. Alongside that, most bosses have areas where players can leave summon signs, which pull them into your game to help you fight the boss if you’re struggling. LMSH is such a big story because Malenia (Blade of Milequia) is one of the hardest bosses in a FromSoft game, as she heals herself when hitting the player, giving players one of the worst debuffs in the game, and having very hard to read attack patterns. I believe LMSH spoke about losing to Malenia some 247 times before beating her for the first time, and so they began to help others with the fight.

Yongyea did a great job but to truly understand from a non-gamer perspective I recommend "The Story of “Let Me Solo Her” Explained - Elden Ring" video made by Evanf1997. You probs didn't understand why he is a legend because the video did not show Malenia's "Waterfowl Dance" or Malenia's 2nd Phase where she splits into 3 copies. Waterfowl dance is this beautiful whirlwind of slashes she does, thrice, kind of like a cyclone. This is a near undodgeable attack on top of Malenia healing when she does damaged to the player (Called Tarnished) Also players can leave their summon signs on the map, since the game is single player by default, the player can have the option to approach the summon sign and summon other players to their game world to fight alongside. You will probably ask, why not summon a lot of people if the boss was so hard? Well, the boss gets stronger the more players it fights, so summoning also has its downsides.
@Drocksas2 жыл бұрын
I'll try to keep this brief, because I could gush relentlessly about Elden Ring and other From Software IP's. Part of the reason that it's natural to be confused with the story just from trailers is because FromSoft (community given nickname for From Software, the developers) usually has a narrative design philosophy that goes along the lines of "you learn about what's going on by interacting with the world." So, the vast majority of the story in Elden Ring is told not in cutscenes, but in NPC (non-player-character) interactions, descriptions of items that hold bits of the lore around them, the visual storytelling of the setting itself; all of this comes together to kind of make you, the player, *discover* the story rather than simply being told it. And, personally, I love that. It makes you feel like you're more a part of the world, something akin to a scholar, a researcher, an archeologist as you progress. Not only do you become stronger in the mechanics of the game, but you can also become more knowledgeable about what's happening around you and why if you so desire. ...Or you can just go fight cool enemies/bosses. It's totally up to how much you wish to invest! (I realize this went a lot longer than I intended, and I apologize for that. Like I said, gushing.)

7:24 melenia is ungodly difficult and has attacks that go on and on an on, do a ton of damage, give you a stronger poison effect that does tons of damage and lasts for 10 minutes at the least (you will run out of maxed out healing before the timer on the poison runs out), and she’s got two stages.

In explanation of the summon sign: Elden Ring is a largely single player game designed to be difficult, every stage, every boss, every enemy is designed to be a challenge to overcome. But sometimes that challenge is too hard for some players. Instead of adding a difficulty slider, FromSoft chose to implement the concept of “summon signs”. Basically this allows you to invite another player into your world so they can help you fight a difficult boss or pass a difficult area. In order to be summoned, a player has to offer themselves up to the community by placing a summon sign for other people to interact with

Just a quick update in case you're interested. Saw an article a few days ago saying that Let me solo her has become such a big part of the whole elden ring topic, including killing melania over 2000 times for other players, that the developers sent him a real sword as a gift. Not a katana like he uses in game unfortunately, but a genuine sword nonetheless.

14:41 in Fromsoft games, be it Dark Souls, Bloodborne or Elden ring. There is a Multiplayer or more like coop feature. The game can be played majoritaly solo, for all intents and purposes its a solo Open world Action RPG( role playing game), but in some areas and like 80% of the bosses, you can "Summon" an ally. Players can "set up" a Sign on the ground just before the Boss room/arena, and if you interact wth it, it will invite/Summon , the player to Your game, and they will be able to fight along side you. Now it is always a coin toss, unless you specificly summon someone you know, else, you never know if the guy will be a genuine help or a darn Troll/useless idiot. So when someone is not only usefull and polite, but also good, some special connection or interaction do happen, and it stays with you for a long time. And thats how the Legend of "Let me SOlo Her" was born, the guy helps other players fight the Boss, over and over again, wich is something that is VERY appreciated by the community as Malenia is one if not THE Hardest boss in the game.

When it comes to interactive vs passive media, it differs on what kind of story you want to tell, or how much authority the writer wants to give to whoever is experiencing the world they created. In games, the player is given as much agency as possible but at the same time, the 'masters' remain in control to guide the player through a certain path. Sort of like a child to a parent.

There are other games where you can team up with a friend to take out bosses but this game in particular uses stones to summon non player characters and your friends to help you battle tough bosses. in a game known for difficult boss battles, the fact that one person can be called on to basically kill the most difficult of those bosses without additional assistance is great. Doubly so when you consider there’s no real compensation for this.

Giant Dad was a meme from the first Dark Souls game. In which the idea was to build a character with a ton of endurance for stamina and carry weight; then you wear an extremely heavy set of armor, the Giant's armor, along with a helmet called the Mask of the Father which further increases your carry weight and use a Chaos infused Zweihander ultra greatsword. Long and short you're so tanky with so much health and stamina you can just poise through attacks; enemies hit you and you won't flinch while you swing your massive sword back at them. Because of the build, armor, and mask this build was dubbed Giant Dad. Summon Signs are a component of the Souls-borne games (Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, Bloodborne, Elden Ring). While people pride themselves on beating bosses alone, these games at heart are multiplayer games. You will see phantoms appear and disappear in your game as you play which are actually other players playing at the same time. Each of these games have tools that allow you to put a mark down on the ground that can either be a Message or a Summon Sign. These marks will appear in other player's worlds that they can click on your message to read what you said (This will either be helpful things like "Be wary of right, ambush" or people just memeing like "Try jumping" in front of bottomless pits.). The Summon Signs will actually allow the player to pull you into their game and the two of you can play together; usually this is done in front of a boss and if you help them defeat the boss you'll receive a reward from the game and then be sent back to your world. This can also be done for Player vs Player combat.

Elden ring has a GREAT story behind it. It's a collaboration between Hidetaka Miyazaki (Dark souls director) and George R R. Martin.
@Gilgland2 жыл бұрын
One cool thing is George R.R. Martin was hire to do some of the story/ world building for the game so there are a lot of fun, complex story lines simultaneously happening all the time. That said, I've played the game for over 100 hours in the past 2 weeks and I still am very un clear on what exactly is happening even after watching Elden Ring lore and story videos.

To try to help understand the struggle with the boss, there is a streamer compilation of their reactions to the boss’s intro, transition, and defeat that might be a nice watch. The developers From Software have a recurring theme in their gameplay loop where each step of the way feels like it’s own hero’s journey in the highs and lows of emotion.

There are passive media that's not lesser to interactive media in the entertainment they give the consumer but as someone who also plays games and enjoys the story crafted by the developers just being able to walk into the world as the story characters did is an experience itself. There's also sentiments on certain IP's the community want to see it in a form of passive media, movies or non/animated series to name specific to see from an outsiders view what choices the characters would've made themselves.

Let Me Solo Her, or as I've heard a few others call him, The Jarnished, will forever be a part of the Soulsborne Ring community. A bastion of hope, barely clothed, and tough Another prominent figure for essentially the opposite reason came from Dark Souls 1. Giantdad. Big, wielding a chaos flame zweihander, coated head to toe in heavy armor, he was a scourge in the pvp community. Basically unless you were frame perfect on him he had every advantage.

So, in Elden Ring (and other FromSoft games in this style), players can place magic signs throughout the world. If another player needs help, they can activate one of these signs, and summon the player who placed it. The summoned player can fight alongside the summoner to help them progress through the game, turning what's normally a solo experience into a team effort. Now, in Elden Ring, Malenia is one of the hardest foes to defeat; even players with all the best weapons, armor, and other equipment often have trouble beating her even after dozens of attempts. What makes Let Me Solo Her legendary is that he volunteers his services with a summoning sign outside of Malenia's lair, and manages to defeat her flawlessly, alone, with no armor and only basic weapons. This is not only a massive flex of skill, but is also very helpful to many players who'd like to progress further in the game but get frustrated by Malenia's brutal difficulty. And yes, the baby in a jar is from Death Stranding.

if your interactive media is writing but you want it to be more interactive with other people, the game you should try playing is a tabletop RPG. there are many of them, some are complicated and some are super simple, but most of them are basically cooperative storytelling.

Don't worry too much about being confused... fromsofts soulsborne games have pretty difficult to understand stories Took me to play trough the game of bloodborne 2 times and watch several video's in order to get the story. It is kind of straight forward in terms of the Current events. But any history or background info you have to FIND and earn the hard way. Exploring, reading and making your own conclusions.

the story side of Elden ring is actually done completely different to pretty much every other media I've seen - including other games. The word just kind of exists around you and you're drip fed story-beats in the main "questline" that you play through and you will fight these main characters and bosses but probably have no idea who they are or what their deal is - the game is also not scared of just letting the side-plots of characters just progress around you and you'll just find some random character you spoke to 30hours ago dead on the floor in some cave with no explanation if you happened to miss out the middle section of their questline that explains it. The gimmick is that the community work together piecing together the story (it's actually how all of the 'souls' games do it). There's subtle hints of the story in descriptions underneath items, cryptic characters that you meet that give small hints hidden in their dialogue and even in the placement of enemies you encounter. It goes in line with the collaborative style of game this video touches on where you get help from the community when you need it - there's also messages you can write in your "world" that then appear in that location in everyone elses "world" - usually used to warn them of an enemy about to jump out at them or a hidden item they may have missed.... or to write "dog" in front of a tortoise. Honestly I could go on and on about all of the other weird ways the game is built around community having hours and hours of content hidden behind crazily specific puzzles or hidden doors - even Malenia from this video - just to reach her there are about 3-4 extremely specific steps to follow just to unlock the area she is in and the game gives the most subtle hints to guide you. I've gone on one a bit but I'd definitely recommend "VaatiVidya" for learning about the world - Each of the main bosses and characters in the game have massive rich backstories behind why they are the way they are in the game so he ends up creative 20+minute videos covering just one character and the clues that hint towards the story he's pieced together.

About the interactive media little diatribe you commented on. As someone who enjoys writing, never professionally, I'm not that good nor instructed on the art, but I am also a gamer and with that, I have a few perspectives. When it comes to gaming and participating in an interactive media from the perspective of a story teller, it is a little different depending on the game in question. With some games, is not so different from watching a movie with a shore in the middle. Granted that the shore is fun enough, is still a good time, but I think those kind of games are not taking proper advantage of the unique possibilities of the medium. Other games are like a theater that like soliloquy and audience interaction. They present to you a story, and make you participate on it, put you on the skin of the characters and try to use the medium to reflect the feeling and struggle of the characters. The challenge is then and integral part of the narrative. Different games use different tactics to achieve the same effect, making you feel part of the story. Other games are like a conversation. They present to you a situation and give you a character. They then ask you, who is this character you just made? what are his values, and how do he reacts to this situations?. They ask you to help them write this story, they present you with half of it, and the other half is something only you will know. Examples of the first kind are bast. Games like God of War, Tomb Raider, Uncharted. They are fun, and some tell very fun stories, but your role on those stories is about as significant as turning the page. Examples of the second are fewer, but still significant. Metal Gear, Ace Attorney, The Last of Us. They all make you feel what they are telling you, they hold your hand and pull you into the stage. Examples of the third are mainly rpg, and very few of them manage to create that specific effect. Vampire the Maskarade, Fallout 1, 2 and new vegas, Disco Elysium. All this to say, they are an experience that, with the story teller mindset, can actually be enhanced rather than diminished, depending as always, of what game you are playing.

The opening cinematic is great, though it can be confusing. As for the summoning stuff, in Elden Ring you have summoning pools scattered around the environment of the game that allow you to summon certain NPC's (Non-Player Characters) and other players to help you in most of the boss fights. If you want to learn more about the lore and characters of Elden Ring and Dark Souls in general, VaatiVidya has excellent lore videos on it.

Maleina is somewhat connected with Scarlet Rot. Scarlet Rot in the Elden Ring universe is a plague, but one that's born of flowers and nature, instead of the typical virus or sickness. Maleina was afflicted by the Rot from birth, rotting her limbs away, hence why she has one arm and one leg. Despite this, she is one of, if not the greatest warrior in all of the Land Between (the place Elden Ring takes place). In fact, when you meet her for the first time, she introduces herself as such. "Heed my words. I am Maleina, Blade of Miquella, and I have never known defeat." (Miquella being her twin brother) The big bad dude you see her fighting in the trailer is General Radahn. He is probably the closest you can come to a match in combat with Maleina but as you saw in the video, Maleina triumphs over him, using her Scarlet Aeonia (that big ass floral bloom made entirely of Rot) to weaken him, which is why when the player fights him, hes already weak. She is regarded as the toughest fight in the entire game for a few reasons. She saps life from you, so every attack she lands, she heals. She has a few attacks that are incredibly hard to dodge, the most infamous one being her "Waterfowl Dance" a series of quick and heavy hitting slashes that she performs mid air, while also chasing you down. Shes a Multi Phase fight, meaning once you get her health down to 0 (probably using all your resources) she changes. Instead of being "Maleina, Blade of Miquella" Shes "Maleina, Goddess of Rot" and gains a whole new health bar, new moves and faster attacks.
