My father - 94 years old today - has seen those signs with his own eyes... In late winter of 1945 my dad together with a lot of other kids were kept in a school building like prisoners, waiting to be sent to Austria the next days to fight against the Red Army. It was called the "Volkssturm". My dad was 16 at this time. Luckily he and two other kids were able to sneak out of that building and escaped at night. On their way to a refugee train they passed a small town. The central place of that town was bordered with trees... On every tree there was a man or even a teenager hanging with those signs around their necks... If my dad and his fellas would have been caught by the SS I wouldn´t be able to write these lines. The guys who stayed in that school building.... no one of them came back... ever

I really loved this story, seeing a German perspective of WW2. Not a Nazi perspective, a German one. Soldiers fighting for their country and home while the party pushed them to further atrocities, and convinced young naive men to give their lives for a lost cause. Band of Brothers has an episode like this, where they have a German regiment that's like a mirror to the American 101st Airborne. They had a lot of the same experiences and faced the same trials and losses. In war they were enemies, but in another life they might have been good friends.

that last sentence reminds me of an interview from a WW1 Veteran who tells his story about fighting in the trenches. He said, that after he had killed a french corporal in close combat, he felt sick and was ashamed of himself. I once watched a streamer play this campaign and he was like "man it feels weird shooting at US Soldiers", now you can understand how I/we felt when shooting at "the Bad Germans" for all those years. Yeah not everyone was innocent back in those times but what I remember from what my grandfather and Great-Grandfather told me, Some of those Soldiers were just trying to defend their families and their Home. I'm by no means justifying what they did but they were just Humans. At the end of the Day we are all just Humans and we need to learn from our past generations and not repeat their mistakes. Germany placed a lot of Mines on Danish shores and german pow were send there to disarm them after the war. Most of them were child soldiers. What a lot of people don't understand is that plenty of German soldiers were not Nazis, some just thought they were defending their country, and a lot were forced to go to war. All SS were Nazis but not all Germans soldiers were SS nor Nazis.

And when Germany was liberated the german civilians treated the allies like they were liberators, saviors saving them from the clutch of the nazis. I was Canadian Army and served in a combat unit for 6 years and I swore that I would carry the philosophy of “I will kill my enemy, but I will not hate them.”…end of the day they were brave enough to fight just like me, and maybe in another life we could have been friends. Also, those signs on the hanged men say something along the lines of “I am a deserter.”

The best war story of the game, that piano theme is so good... I'm a bit fan of WW2 history and playing this chapter knowing that the german forces were in the last stand fighting alongside the volkssturm which were conscripts civilians, vets of ww1, and the Hitler youth surrounded with bits of ammo, no food or medical supplies... was heartbreaking, if you want an excellent depiction of how were the last moments of Germany I suggest you watch the movie downfall, great reaction as always. the fact its a rare instance a game allows you to play as the opposing faction in a war that makes this such a great mission. We're all used to playing the good guys and winning the day, but never think about being in the shoes of those soldiers fighting for what they thought was right, being scared and seeing their word crumble around them. There are some terrible people in history, but most of the enemy, were just people.

The easiest thing to assume is that all Germans were die hard Nazi fanatic's, however a majority of the German army where just regular men fighting a war for their country. Not saying the German army didn't commit some gruesome and terrible things during the war. However when you dive deep into World War II history, especially from the perspective of the other side, and ignore all the common consensus that you've heard, their is a lot that makes them more human than monsters. As the war ended many German soldiers lost faith and hope in their leadership, the propaganda couldn't hide the destruction and death as they fought in their own nation and cities against the Allied tide. They witnessed children being given guns and told to fight next to the soldiers, often just to delay an enemy advance so the army could retreat, a majority of the time being a suicide order to buy time for more defenses to be built else where. The Voldsstrum isn't depicted in the game, but they are civilians conscripted to fight. They are given a weapon, little training to use it, an told to defend Germany to the death. Any who refused to fight were declared traitors and hung for treason, serving as an example to others who refused to fight. The signs were usually common on their bodies, To sum up the signs on the hanging soldiers, "I'm a traitor to Germany," I have deserted Germany", I refused to fight for Germany." It's so easy to depict German soldiers as evil men, murdering and destroying everything in their path, it's easier to kill a faceless monster then another human with a face.

Call of Duty World At War is another amazing game with a very brutal depiction of World War 2, music alone is terrifying it's one of the few games to really show the horrors of war something every Call of Duty after has failed to come close. World of War also carried over into Black Ops which is set in the Cold War and does a good job as well just showing a different era of war going for a more action film feel. The Battlefield stories are great much more hopeful and inspiring while World of War is very much about showing you the negatives of war and that there's never a true winner which is brought back up in Black Ops 1.

I played this Story myself, and its amazing in my opinion. For me as a German it was also kinda line playing as the former „us“ and it really showed that were all just people. Some do good and some do bad, unfortunately.

The Tiger was pretty infamous among the allies. British tanks capable of taking one on were much slower, while tanks fast and agile enough to engage them lacked sufficient firepower or durability. Same with the German battleship Bismarck; anything that could catch her couldn't sink her, and anything that could sink her couldn't catch her.

The last quote about fighting until the bitter end even if it sets the world ablaze is something a lot of nations say in war. When Britain wanted to capitulate, but ultimately didn't, we see them as heroes for not surrendering. But when German soldiers did the same, we see them as barbaric and evil because they would rather die than surrender. It is interesting to me that they are essentially the same thing. Being patriotic to your country until the bitter end. The truth is that a soldier just does what he is told, and no matter the nation they are all brainwashed to believe they are in the right...

the line "but i was there' is a direct quote from Franz Stangl's final interview - he died of heart failure 19 hours later. For those who dont know, Stangl was the first commandant of the Sobibor death camp. Despite gaining a fearsome reputation there (and the nickname "the white death") it appears that Stangl was not an ardent mass murderer; he quickly began drinking heavily and the killings at Sobibor fell very far behind the nazi's schedule, leading to Stangl being removed in a matter of months after building the camp. At the end of the war Stangl fled to south america but never tried to hide and he was eventually captured and sentenced to prison in 1967. As the last of the death camp commanders a journalist named Gita Sereny inteviewed him a number of times in prison. Sereny was especially interested in whether Stangl had any remorse, because Stangl had consistently maintained that he was just following orders. Then, in his final, tense, interview, Stangl said "i was there.... that is my guilt. I was there". Sereny's account of the interview is extraordinary. Having appeared to have finally recognised his guilt aloud, Stangl died 19 hours later.

I remember having family members tell me the story of Battle of Berlin because they served or they were civilians trying not to get hurt by either side had a family member told me that he was Manning a machine gun in one of the churches in Berlin but he ran out of ammunition and he looked around and saw all his friends and comrades Brothers in arms was killed either by grenades but bullets or shell shock got to them first I cried uncontrollably when i finished this mission because it helped me put in perspective what my family went through that same relative that fought in Berlin said to me that when the American soldiers came up to his position he just walked out from behind the sandbags crying he had the dog tags of his friends he said the American soldiers looked at them with chocolate understanding damn it I'm crying again

The public shaming was an attempt to discourage new desertions and a way to tell the others "look at my selfishness, instead of protecting you/fighting at your side i preferred to run like a coward" The amounts of desertions between the soldiers of the wehrmacht greatly increased during the last months of war, because they knew it was over. Despite all i still feel sorry for them, the human instinct is to flee from the danger, not holding a position and shooting back, especially when you know to be fighting an already lost battle, it felt like losing their lives over nothing.

So the Tank Commander isn't a Nazi, he's just a soldier in the army. he doesn't agree with the ideology however doesn't speak out against it either but he does over the course of this 3-4 hour story, he also does not see the point in killing people like they were doing in this level IE hanging fathers, old people and troops for "deserting" simply because they are incapable of fighting or suffering from some health issue (PTSD etc). The tank driver is not a Nazi either but does speak out against it from time to time and also hates seeing young soldiers dieing for no good reason (he along with the commander are old friends who have served together for many years, the other 2 are new crew). The gunner is a nazi who was part of the Hitler Youth which is why he is fanatical about Germany being superior and only cares about winning.

I would have to give it more thought to fully articulate an answer, but I think arguing about who is and is not a Nazi in the German army in world war 2 is semantics. They still did what they did. Idk if it makes sense but to me, doing the thing makes you part of the thing. I'm not explaining my thoughts well.

@@HannaHsOverInvested i do think there can be a divide between "German soldiers" and Nazi, case in point, the battle of Castle Itter, were a division of German army troops, and a single SS officer, teamed up with the Americans to protect a number of French POW, including the former Prime Minister of France, from a force of more fanatical SS troops. it's a fascinating story, and, one I hope gets told more, to bring it more into public perspective. there was supposed to be a movie in the works about it, but, then Covid happened.

Fun historical facts Hannah: most people part of the Wehrmacht (the regular german armed forces at that time) did not support nazi ideology. they had to obey or they would get shot, or worse. heck they banned anyone in the regular army from joining the nazi party. The SS are the ones who were essentially volunteers, full blown nazi, and a private army of Hitler, not a national one like the Wehrmacht. Even some german high commanders expressed displeasure at nazi ideology and corruption, such as General Rommel. Both sides willingly targeted civilian infrastructure and civilians themselves the allies and soviets did not know about concentration camps until 1944 and 1945 respectively. (5-6 years into the war) Luftwaffe (german air force) aces were often honourable, meaning that they wouldnt shoot pilots and crews who ditched out of a shot down aircraft in parachutes. The luftwaffe also prohibited their members from joining the nazi party, tho the luftwaffe is more closely related to the party than their navy or army due to their founding members all being part of the party, however, most were just young men who were drafted and wanted to fly, and didnt care much for the party.

But yeah battlefield is very good at making heartfelt campaigns that you care for, and honestly the last tiger is the best one they made in battlefield 5 as you are not fighting to win, you are defending your land and protecting those behind you. Sadly most germans be it soldiers or civilians had no clue what happend with the jews and less desirables... Most were utterly shocked.

The Soviets went on a revenge mission, German soldiers and civilians would try to kill themselves if they got the chance, As Soviets would either beat or line them up and have them shot. In Berlin it was horrible, Especially if you were a civilian that didn't flee in time. Worst if you were a woman..

Yes the terribel propaganda of the Nazis was one of the worse things on the third rich. This make us problems until today. An example: My grandpa was a pilot at the offensive of the ardennen. He never tell much about it. Only this story: He should bombard a farm and was so nervous or brave, that he dropped the bomb too early. His chief told him, that he from now on, had to fly first in line. And if he dropp the bomb too early again, the squadron will fire on him. And so the next bomb hit the target. He hate the Nazis after the war. But I told you this, because our old neighbour. He was in the "Hitlerjugend" like my grandpa, but to young to go to war. And he was until the end the opinion, that under the Nazis was the things good. This man has lived 75 Years. The most of it in our democracy, but the indoctrinated still worked.

@@Juhani96 It's a sad thing, that happens in our time, right now and for the last few years. Where people change history books, to fit their narrative. They change history and with that they are doomed to repeat it. I do not like the qoran, or the bible or tora, but I would never burn a copy of it. Someone once said "First, they burn the books, but people quickly follow." Yes, these books can be dangerous in the wrong hands, but to burn ideas is even more dangerous. Who decides what is allowed and what not? I fear what will happen to us in the next few years, when radicals grow stronger everywhere. We are running at full speed into the next great apocalypse. Because we destroy our own lands and people. Clima changes, wars are waged, trade routs are in danger and with it famine spreads, refugees grow in numbers as people flee their homes in hope of a new live and more wars will follow. This describes the bronze age collaps, or is it our time?

Found your channel through Ciaphas Cain and 40K and was suprised... NOW I SEE YOU REACTED TO THIS?! Love it. Some would say things that "girls" or "woman" would normaly not play or watch, but i think you know what i mean. I really enjoyed it. THX. I loved to see this gameplay in Battlefield 5, Im a German and we all know enough about ww2 and how bad it was. But its so good and emotional to see the real perspective. An cruel Regime, but the men who are fighting are just ordinary Germans and most of them dont want to kill, fight and dont think theyre a "better Race" than everyone else...

i think its the interactive nature of this media that makes the sentiment of the cutscenes hit the hardest. It feels like you're there...making those decisions...experiencing those things alongside the characters. Interactive media has the potential to be very powerful sometimes. Be prepared for that when you become a gamer!

After some consideration, I think the GIs shot the boy, now that his gun was turned away. The reason being the two shots fired sounded like two separate guns (M1 Garand), fired in close succession unlike the MP-40(?) which has a slower cadence.

Your point about people learning they're on the wrong side of history, Think about this, some Germans had previously fought through ww1 and were called up again to fight, and then when Germany surrendered they had to treat the allies as neutral parties again. I can't imagine fighting an enemy for so long, enemies responsible for possibly killing your friends in the army, and going back to normality. I'm not excusing them for their acts, but we weren't guilt free either, war is hell.

It's nice to see a game delve into the other side of the war for a change. Despite the fact that the Nazis have universally been labeled as 'evil' the truth is far more complex, a lot of Germans who served in the armed forces during this period had many driving motivations, many of which had nothing to do with the party line. The same goes for World War 1 to a degree, the Germans are often portrayed in gaming media and film as 'the enemy' or 'the bad guys' when they are simply other human beings who are often thrust into the same situation as the protagonist fighting for the allies. In a little bit of a lighter note (if anything in this mission could be called 'light' at least), the current consensus is that Peter survived. Schroder had emptied his weapon's magazine (you can see the bolt on the MP40 being back, which means there's no ammo in the weapon) before he turned to try and shoot Peter, so it's likely the last shots are from a US 'grease gun' and that they took Schroder out. There's also a fan theory regarding Peter: in Battlefield 3 one of the characters we play is called Jonathan Miller, a U.S. tank commander who's also a Desert Storm veteran. Many of us think that after the end of the war Peter emigrated from Germany to America in order to start fresh and either he or his son anglicized the family name to Miller to better fit in. So potentially he wound up living a long and happy life in America and became a great great grandfather.

stories like this and even stories that are told in music are what made me want to delve deeper into WW2 and history in general. Sabaton and their song "No Bullets Fly" specifically because it was about a German fighter pilot who escorted an American bomber over the atlantic wall back to safety. Well into the 1980's the pilot of the American bomber ended up finding the German pilot who saved his life and they became the best of friends. It's stories like these that we cannot let be erased from history. Stories like these NEED to be told. In the end, were all just people doing as were told.

15:00 this scene always gets to me. Their undefeatable Germany in ruins. Almost all German soldiers followed their orders blindly. Now seeing it all come apart while they fought over nothing. Makes me sad.

A quote goes, “a good soldier does not treat his enemy as a fellow human. The moment he sees his enemy as a human being, he is no longer a good soldier.” I think you’ll find most battle hardened veterans don’t display much emotion compared to fresh recruits. They are used to the senseless slaughter. Some even thrive in it. It’s sad but true, to survive in war, often you are forced to become cold blooded, and give up any last remnants of humanity and your morales you still hold inside you. But very rarely, occasionally, there are brief moments of humanity when both sides realise the bloody slaughter is pointless. When they spare each other. They are like brief and rare flickers of light in an endless, dark and empty void. War is just another way of solving issues that inefficient governments fail to do so peacefully. The only difference is the cost in blood, sweat, and tears.

Peter survived most likely since he is narrating his story and that the sound of the gun when it cut to the black screen was the M3A1 Grease Gun that some of US soldiers were using not the MP-40 implying that the US soldiers killed the kid.

its interesting how when hes going through the city and theyre saying they evacuated all the civilians from the city he still sees civilians there, hes either coming to the realization that theyre just being fed lies, or hes basically just like "just another lie" because of the no emotion in his reaction. Soldiers go in being told theyre fighting for freedom and for their people, but a lot of times when they get to the battlefield and are in the middle of the war they start realizing the things theyre told were just lies.

When I was younger, I got to play COD World at War once - I remember being surprised that you could play as the Soviets and that they were not just simply enemies. Even though i suck at shooters, the respectful treatment of the Russian characters left an impression on me in the brief period I got to play. Over the years, I forgot about that feeling... but I gained an interest in trying to look at conflicts as more than about which side won and which side lost. The nature of war demands that you have to strip your enemy, and yourself to a lesser extent, of your humanity because it's the only way you can make the mass killing necessary - and this demand to portray the "enemy" as a monolith doesn't end with the war. Hannah being a history buff, has probably already heard about this, but i think the WW2 Christmas ceasefire football match is a great example of the importance of seeing humanity in everyone - a tense temporary ceasefire was announced on one of the battlefields, with allied forces and German forces climbing onto No Man's Land to see the enemy they had spent months trying to murder for the sake of ending the battle. They talked, shared names, played a game of football, and for a brief moment were not "Invader Allies" or "Nazis." They could be people, men and boys having fun. I remember reading "The Book Thief" and being reminded of how the brainwashing of the Nazi propaganda felt so similar to the way racism influenced characters in "To kill a mockingbird". People being ready to murder another person just because of their skin, being treated as scapegoats for all that was wrong in the community. Grandiose musings aside, I apologize for writing an essay and i think what I am trying to say is that even at its worst, history always has nuance - you just have to remember to look for it. These trailers did an amazing job at not glorifying war or propaganda, which is not easy - especially for people that were on the wrong side of history. Somewhat related, the decades long Gundam series deals extensively with the idea of exploring two sides of a conflict fairly

It was WW1 and there was no Nazis. Also the Christmas truce was only in certain spots on the front line most of the front line were still lobbing shells. Also the following years both sides command structures banned the idea from happening again.

YES!!! Finally Hannah reacted to this!!! When I first played through this mission I was very sceptical, and surprised how a AAA company was going to handle this. It may not bode well regarding PR, and all also you play as literal Nazis, I thought they may have cheapened the take on the baddies side, boy was I in for a heart wrenching shocker. The End scene when TC Peter gets shot by the younger tankman was extremely sad. The Runner mission in Battlefield 1 and now this ... I have to say those are in my top 10 gaming missions, or atleast gaming cutscenes. To add on when playing it felt weird and wrong to shoot and destroy allied troops and tanks... I got over it towards the cathedral mission, but hearing americans say "Just give up already" or smth etc when you are fighting them, idk, I have played too many WW2 games on the allied side I guess. EDIT: Due to misinterpretation of shorthand refer to comments.

Actually you didn’t play as Nazis. The crews were often from the Wehrmacht and only the tank commanders could come from from the Waffen SS but not always. So not Nazis, just Nazi and that’s only if the tank commander we sometimes play as is actually from the Waffen SS. Idk why everyone thinks every German soldier in WWII was a nazi

@@naturalbadger5258 Yes and no obviously everyone wasnt a card carrying Nazi, however I do believe the "Clean Wermacht" narrative doesnt hold they too did commit heinous warcrimes although not as often and as gruesome as the SS Divisions . I am aware the diffrerent branches did come into conflict with each other, but more over pride, war planning and allocation of resources than on anti-nazi sentiment/unnecessary violence. TLDR No I dont bellieve they were all nazis, I was just using shorthand.

@@naturalbadger5258 The "clean Wehrmacht" is as much of a myth as "everyone in the German army was a Nazi". The truth lies somewhere in the middle. There were large differences inside of the Wehrmacht, many were true Nazis, whether through approving of Hitler or being brainwashed youth, some were forced into service at gunpoint (or worse). The biggest group was probably the ordinary conscripts, who, swayed by propaganda and lack of other views truly believed they were defending their homeland from outside aggression, not much different from the citizens of other countries (except that their country was, in fact, the aggressor and unspeakably cruel, but people have the uncanny ability to twist a lot of terrible things into thinking theyre doing good.).

While it follows the Clean Wehrmacht Myth (wehrmacht was good and innocent, the SS were the real baddies), it’s still a good perspective for a game to present. (It also follows the “German technological superiority myth”, which is cool in a storytelling perspective but also flat out untrue.

At the end of the war, thousands of soldiers and civilians were murdered for allegedly being traitors or for deserting. The misfortune that the Nazis brought upon Europe was endless. Fortunately, the world community has resisted and ended this barbarity! This must never be forgotten. This episode was incredibly well done, it shows how blinded and stubborn the soldiers until the last minute an absolutely hopeless fight. For a game really not bad! Ultimate movie recommendation for you, if you want to deal more with the topic, "Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter" (in english: "our mothers, our fathers", moviename in english: Generation War). It's about German friends whose different stories are told during WW2. Three-parter that has it absolutely in itself, afterwards you sit partly speechless there. Greetings from Germany :)

I just want to say, it's probably been echoed in the comments a lot. But I think a lot of people need to realize that "German", "Nazi" etc, it's not just that black and white. In history in general there's so much grey, exceptionally so when compared to WWII there's so many moving parts and lenses, and sides to it it's just not a clean subject. If you wanted to learn more, and not even suggesting you react to them, but one of the best ways to learn about this is Sabaton and their History Channel. I would recommend listening to the songs "Wehrmacht" "Hearts of Iron" and "Last Battle"

They are slightly exaggerating how potent the Tiger was. Don't get me wrong, it was in fact a very powerful tank and it was well-designed for the most part, but the Wehrmacht arguably didn't have much use for that kind of tank. Sure, in a sort of duel it would probably beat the majority of allied tank designs, but the issue was, that was not the kind of encounter you'd be seeing in the war and ultimately, the ressources would probably have been better used on fielding more of the smaller, more efficient designs, rather than just a relatively small amount of really big and heavy tanks that still wouldn't survive getting ganged up on by two or three lighter allied tanks.

Hey, I really think you should look more into a game called The Wolf Among Us. You checked out what was basically the shortest trailer possible for it but I think if you checked out a few more regarding each episode (because it’s an episodic game, with 5 episodes in total)

The whole thing about Muller in this story is about the german perspective of the non-SS troops of the WW2 germany. Many of these german "ww1 heroes" were drafted to lead panzer crews in ww2, even though they didnt believe in the Hitlers cause. As his father said "maybe you didnt steal along with the rest of the kids.. but you were there." Which is a reference to the countless of german soldiers not exactly believing in the "aryan superiority" and the whole jewish being the mean cause of everything going wrong in germany. It literally means this last tigers commander's father said that neutrality is still taking sides, which in truth, is just like that. Its the same as if you dont vote, you will always give a vote to the political party that is against your point of view. The boy in the story is one of those brainwashed kids of german citizens that believed 100% in the hitlers ideals of no surrender and that opposing hitlers meant that you were against him.

if you are interested in the german point of view i highly suggest the movie "downfall" wich shows the last few days of hitlers life in the fuhrer bunker, and i also reccomend "stalingrad" from 1993 wich depicts the gruesome battle of stalingrad from the german perspective and how desperate they got there. also the medal he drops at the end is the iron cross wich is a medal handed out to those who showed great courage in battle

The end of the video is a bit misleading. One of the reasons why Dönitz was waiting with the surrender was that he was trying to transfer as many German divisions to west so they could surrender to Americans.

An interesting bit is that each character we focus on is killed by their fellow countrymen, not the “enemy.” Even though the perspective was german, it did not glorify anything done by Germany, and certainly not at this point in the war. They still followed their orders, because they lived in a society that values that. It does not mean they were innocent, but it does not mean that they weren't Human. They committed evil, and lived with evil. They did not stop it, and they did not do enough to resist it as a whole. They are still Human, as were the millions that they killed in the Fatherland's effort to commit atrocity.

It's always a delicate topic to show WWII from the other side. It is important but I 100% agree it feels like a yucky feeling. Or to put it in Joakim Broden's words "Were they the victims of the time Or proud parts of larger goals?" BTW: I don't know why it annoys me so much but changing the nazi salute to a normal one or hiding swastica from the flag when noticed (at least for me) breaks immersion in the story. I know it's nitpicking and it's probably the result of countless hours of meetings to create a compromise between the developer and publisher. Am I alone in this or is anyone else with me? At least they kept it in german.

@@pietka33 Oh, the Imperial German flag wasn't used by Germany during WWII at all, as far as I am aware at least. I'm right with you in that I think if are going to make a product about WWII, you should just use the real flag. Frankly, if someone gets upset over seeing a Nazi flag in a piece of media set in Nazi Germany, then they should probably do a bit of growing up. Oh and as for the famous Nazi salute, just as an interesting bit of trivia, that very same salute used to be used for the Pledge of Allegience in American schools before WWII. During the war, of course, it was replace with a salute of putting your right hand over your heart.

BFV is very different. Much less realism. The skin system makes all players look inaccurate and almost cartoony. Otherwise the gameplay is better: better moving, weapon system and others.
