So much of Ellie's character IS Ashley Johnson- not only did she voice Ellie in the game, but she pretty much completely shaped her character with her own personality. She's the reason Ellie is such a beloved character, so her being Ellie's mom in this series was really cool to see and made me really emotional. "You fuckin' tell em, Ellie". What a great way to pass the torch to Bella

@@psblove I completely agree and no one has explained the procedure to her and then allowed her to make a choice. Joel is a Father figure at this point and I’m sure she would’ve wanted to say goodbye if that was her choice.
@TrashPandaActual
@TrashPandaActual Жыл бұрын
@@psblove no, she's not Joel's child, but she's accepted him as a father figure and he's accepted her as a daughter, very much the same as an adoption or a stepfather/stepdaughter relationship. Marlene isn't necessarily much of anything to her. But Marlene is self-righteous and consciously took any choice away from her by not telling her the procedure would kill her. She wasn't offered the choice to sacrifice herself for the greater good, even though that's probably the choice she would've made. Whatever promise Marlene made to Ellie's mother, she tossed aside and relegated Ellie to the status of lab rat, condemning her to death, for an end goal of something that no one, including the doctor, knew for sure would even work. Joel, on the other hand, did exactly what any real father would've done given the same circumstances. No doubt he was thinking he wasn't about to lose another daughter, and Ellie had become his de facto daughter. Parents make difficult choices for their children, and those choices are centered around making sure the child is safe and protected.

I love how in almost all the reactions I've seen so far, everyone goes from "yay it's Marlene!" to "please just kill all of them" in 2 seconds lol. They made the scene so much more weighted than the game too. In the game it's just like any other action sequence, in this you can feel what Joel is feeling, these people, the Fireflies, none of them matter to him. He has one goal in mind, and they are just obstacles. I love how they did the sound, how it clears up once he finally reaches Ellie to show he's made it to his focus, it's so good

Oh, I've been waiting for this one, omg. It was such a nice touch to have Ashley Johnson play Ellie's mom - she played Ellie in the game and so she gave birth to Ellie both narratively and metaphorically which is nice. And yes, the game ends exactly like this with Ellie saying "okay" and then cutting to black as the credits roll. The reason the game has had 10+ years of staying power is that it ends in such a morally ambiguous "icky" way. Clearly the "right answer" would have been for them to wake Ellie up and give her the choice and let her say goodbye and all that, but Joel didn't give Ellie that choice for the same reason that Marlene didn't either - they were both afraid of what she would choose. Pretty much EVERYONE would be willing to risk SOMEONE ELSE'S kid to try and make a cure, but at the same time wouldn't be willing to risk THEIR OWN kid. Similarly, I think MOST people would be willing to sacrifice themselves for the chance to save humanity but it would have to be a voluntary choice for folks to be okay with it. It's also ambiguous as to whether or not the cure could even work - they could have killed Ellie and done all the tests and still not be able to synthesize a cure from it, in which case it could have been for nothing. Joel would rather Ellie never trust him again but at least she's alive and can grow up which is VERY much "the parent thing to do", especially after Sarah. And I think her "okay" at the end is perfect - she's got enough street smarts to know something isn't right with Joel's story, but she "lacks the evidence to prosecute" if you will, so that "okay" is less of a "I believe you" and more of a "I'm suspicious but have no proof and I love you and want it to be true" Neil Druckmann (game writer / director) said that when they asked play testers "did Joel make the right choice?" - that if the play testers DIDN'T have kids, they were split 50/50, but if the play testers DID have kids, they were 100% in agreement that "yes Joel was right" and I think that illustrates how we change when we have kids. Glad you guys loved it so much, it's such an amazing story Cheers

Love the parallels between Joel and Anna. In Ep 8, at the end, Joel soothes a screaming Ellie by holding her and telling her “It’s okay, I got you.” At the beginning of Ep 9, although it’s a flashback, we see Anna calming Ellie as a baby by holding her and saying “It’s okay, I’ve got you”. Both times, Ellie, in her most vulnerable moments, is comforted and soothed by a parent. Anna: “I cut it before I was bit.” Joel: “They’ve stopped looking for a cure.” Parents lying to protect their kids. Marlene really knows what Joel is capable of and still expected him to just go out without fighting back? Like -you know this dude is dangerous anyway, but a man who’s been broken for 20 years, who finally has felt healing through knowing his child, and then faced with the thought of losing again makes a man LETHAL. Really loved the giraffe scene too. It was a real giraffe! There’s behind the scenes pictures of Pedro and Bella feeding it-they filmed it at the Calgary Zoo in Canada! It was such a nice, quiet moment in the midst of chaos, and animal therapy has been known to help people who’ve been traumatized, which is what Ellie needed (they both did). Joel’s relief in his face when he hears her laugh again makes me so happy-he knows the old her is still in there-it’ll just take a little while before it comes back out. The revelation that Joel tried to take his life hurt me on 2 levels: 1.) it added weight to when he tried to get Henry to not go the same way (he knew what Henry was thinking because he’d been there himself) and 2.) I imagine it was difficult for Pedro to film that scene and go to that place, because he’s shared in several interviews that he lost his mom to suicide when he was younger. Joel probably sensed that Ellie was depressed, and shared that with her to tell her “I’ve been there before too, but it’ll get better, and you’ll be okay.” 😢 Regardless of what you think was right, we can all agree that we can understand why Joel did it, and we can also understand why Ellie would not have wanted him to do it. Joel couldn’t bare to lose another daughter, his whole world, at the cost of humanity. He was holding Ellie the same way he held Sarah all those years ago. It wasn’t the infected that took her, it was the government who were in the position to protect people. In his mind, Marlene represents the same people who took Sarah from him. His intense violence all comes from a place of trauma and grief, and his feeling like he failed his daughter. He couldn’t fight back then, but now he can. The way Pedro portrayed that emptiness/numbness/disassociation in Joel during his rampage was brilliant. It’s only in the elevator that we can see him finally come back to himself and begin to grapple with the ramifications of what he just did. At the same time, both Marlene and Joel failed to give Ellie her agency and a choice. She had a purpose (to save the world), but now she feels purpose-less. The first episode is called, “When You’re Lost in the Darkness”, and the finale is called “Look for the Light”. Ellie’s name literally means light. She took Joel out of his darkness, and helped him heal. Joel was remembering Bill’s letter, “I used to hate the world and I was happy when everyone died. But I was wrong, because there was one person worth saving. So that’s what I did-I saved him, and then I protected him. That’s why men like you and me are here, we have a job to do-and God help anyone who stands in our way.” Bill’s person was Frank, Joel’s is Ellie. And at the end, Ellie is remembering what Maria told her, “The only people who can betray us are the ones we trust”…😢❤ She for sure knows he’s lying to her, and their relationship will never be the same. Its a complicated, messy story for sure-no one is definitely good or evil. Humans are complicated, and when pushed, love can make us do beautiful and horrific things. It’s a beautiful narrative though-two broken, hurting people who find healing in each other. It’s not time that heals our wounds, it’s people, and the love that we give and receive from them. ❤ All of those Emmy nominations were so deserved, and can’t wait for Season 2!

Ellie was the light, hence the title of the finale episode (Look for the Light). If you look back in the second episode, she's sleeping in the fetal position, bathed in light. Joel and Tess are in the darkness and that's in the name of the first episode( When You're Lost in the Darkness). Joel was lost in the darkness and he followed Ellie into the light. She saved him and he saved her right back. I would have done the same thing in Joel's position. He made the right choice with saving her, but the wrong choice lying to her. And its ironic because there are several times in the show she tells him he's too honest and if he lied to her she'd believe him. This is going to change their relationship forever. Ellie has been looking for purpose because she lived and Riley didn't. She finally got an answer, and while I don't think they could have successfully made a cure, in Ellie's mind, it didn't matter. She would have gone through with it. But I feel like people forget she's only 14. She's not equipped to make that type of decision at such a young age. Marlene also didn't know for sure if Ellie would say yes because she didn't know her. And I also believe she was just too chicken to tell her, so they just did it the easiest way and put her to sleep. Marlene manipulated her and put the fate of the world on her shoulders. Of course she's going to say yes. I also don't know how anyone could justify killing a perfectly healthy 14 year old girl. Plus, was the world worth saving at that point anyway? It baffles me after all they went through and the horrible things they saw that people still focus on the cure. This is the question I never see anyone ask. Wrong and right... and good and evil aren't always black and white. And Ellie knows that Joel is lying about the raiders, but she chooses to believe the lie because the truth of knowing that the only person she loves the most would lie to her about something that he knew meant so much to her is too painful to bear.

I am sure it’s been said already, but the actress who played Ellie’s mom is who brought Ellie to life in the game. She did all the motion capture and voice work for the game, so seeing/hearing her play the mom was amazing and a bit meta lol. Hearing Joel beg to see Ellie, even though it was a demand, broke me. The giraffe scene is always one of my favorites because it brings Ellie back from the brink a little and she’s a kid for a minute. Seeing Joel switch into dad mode and become the killer he had to be, hearing the music come up and the gunshots get muffled, he was on a mission, it all goes back to Bills letter “god help any mother fucker who gets in our way”. He will do whatever is necessary to protect her, even lying to her face, no matter the consequences that come down the road, he will always do what he feels is right, regardless.

As soon as I discovered your channel I watched all your TLOU reactions. I’ll get to some other shows for sure. Out of all these reaction videos I enjoyed and looked forward to yours the most. Thank you! Recommendation: Play the first game but try your very best to not play the second and avoid spoilers at all costs! A couple more things. That was a real giraffe, no cgi. The giraffe scene was also in the game and was considered an iconic scene. I think people who played the game would’ve rioted had they left it out. An extremely emotional episode but the part that hit me like a train was: “Well, I guess time heals all wounds.” “It wasn’t time that did it.” Then you looks they gave each other. Holy hell, I’m going to need to see a therapist for that part, lol. That part wasn’t in the game. As someone who has played both games many, many times all I have to say is Mazin, Druckmann, HBO and everyone involved just knocked it out of the park. Grand Slam! Last but not least, Pedro and Bella deserve those Emmys. The show does too. Every single one they are nominated for as far as I’m concerned. Again, love you guys!

Loved your series reaction to this! It was a delight feeling like I was watching TLOU with you both. I have no children, but I'm 100% on Joel's side... Marlene putting all her faith in a doctor who "thinks" the cordyceps were growing in Ellie's brain since birth and being willing to send her to surgery to die didn't sit right with me. If this doctor thought he could do all this fancy-schmancy stuff to produce a vaccine, which would probably take awhile or years to produce, they could have afforded the time to wait for Ellie to talk to Joel, make an informed decision, and run testing on her. None of this crack her open and hope the doctor was right and doesn't botch the job, thus killing the ONLY person they know to be immune because they were in a rush.

I've been going through and watching tons of channels' reactions to this. This is EXACTLY how the game went down - the rush to surgery, Joel fighting to get Ellie back, the lies in the truck, the "swear to me", all of it. It's been a beautiful, thought provoking ending to a story for the past ten years. Neither side is right or wrong. They both make good points and you completely understand where they're coming from. The Fireflies would go for the greater good, Joel would save his new daughter, and Ellie wouldn't want him to. And you can completely understand why everyone feels the way they feel. It's why TLOU is a masterpiece after all this time.

You two were amazing this whole season! Thank you for giving us this reaction! This story is a masterpiece because of HOW it challenges us. This show doesn't give you what your heart wants, it respects the story and the characters enough to give them honest internal conflict. And we will now see how the decisions made will effect the story moving forward. The Last of Us doesn't give it to us easy. It respects us enough to challenge us fundamentally on what it means to love someone, and the dark side of love. We will all remember that moving forward into future seasons. I recommend to stay away from the comment sections if you don't want to get spoiled.

I think my favorite thing from this is in the game when they had people testing it, they asked about Joel’s decision, and if they thought it was right or wrong. They said if the player did not have kids, it was 50/50 that they felt Joel did the right thing, vs doing the wrong thing. If the player had a child, 100% of the time they said Joel did the right thing. To give you guys a little crumb I think you all already know for season 2…you can’t keep a lie THAT big, under wraps forever.

Fabulous reaction. I enjoyed it. So happy you agreed with Joel's choice instead of Marlene. Pedro Pascal is used to playing characters who don't follow the standard rules. Ellie didn’t decide. She didn’t know she was going to be giving up her life. They never asked her. Maybe if they had, she would have said yes. If she’d said no, there’s no way the fireflies would have just let her go. Also she’s a traumatised child and no child should be made to make that decision. Joel’s been a parent and he knows this. So… whilst Marlene or Joel didn’t give Ellie the choice!… It was Marlene who started the ball rolling and Joel only had one recourse at that point. As you said, Marlene started the party and Joel brought the fireworks. Only good option would have been to have kept Ellie safe until she is old enough to make the decision for herself. But Marlene took that off the table.

Both Marlene and Joel took away Ellie's agency. Marlene made the mistake of sparing Joel despite what she knows about him. Joel knew in his heart that Ellie would've chosen to go ahead with the surgery, even if the outcome wasn't certain. Because she understood that it was the first spark of hope that there was a way for humanity to overcome the outbreak. It's an impossible choice. Marlene makes her decision as a leader to save as many as she can save. Joel makes his decision as a father to save the one he loves. It's the Trolley Problem presented in a compelling, riveting way. That lie. That lie that Joel so desperately wants to get past with Ellie will surely be the thing that poisons their relationship. Ellie told Joel how important it was to her that everything they went through-she went through-and the deaths of the people she connected with along the way would come to mean something. Joel, out of love, made sure the opportunity for Ellie to make that choice won't come again. Ellie knows Joel too well now that she sees he's lying. Should she find out the truth, I don't think she'll forgive him. Also, the giraffe was real :). The Calgary zoo let the crew set up blue screens in a section of the giraffe enclosure so they could film that surreal scene.
