That Doug Flutie dropkick is even more impressive when you consider that was the first successful dropkick since 1941! They used to be more common in the 1920s-1930s when the ball was more rounded like a rugby ball. The design made the ball easier to bounce reliably compared to the modern more pointed design, which is easier to throw compared to the pre-1930s style ball.

@james_ford86
@james_ford86 10 ай бұрын
@@12jswilson You know what? It's not as easy as you think. Let's not forget that, even though it was rare, every now and then, even professional place kickers would miss those PATs from time to time. There were only two kickers in the entire history of the NFL who never missed a PAT from that distance, but both of those guys had short careers, so it doesn't really count due to the small sample size. On a PAT, you're usually lined up directly in the middle of the field goal posts, so that's about as easy as it gets and people still missed them from time to time. Whether it was due to lapse in concentration, hitting the ball wrong, bad hold, etc. is unclear. That said, if you are lined up on the left or right hash, like for a FG instead of a PAT, and you're that close, it becomes a lot more difficult of a kick to make due to the angle you have to kick at. So, it's not that easy sometimes.

Bellicheck cracks me up. He’s usually so grumpy but someone makes a drop kick field goal… The man knows what he likes. You ever hear him with reporters he’s all scowles and one word answers but if you watch his whole press conferences there are like two Boston reporters he engages in long conversations with and it’s because they basically long ago gave up on actually asking the guy relevant questions about his team or the games they just played but instead ask him obscure historical football topics like, I don’t know the development of the single wing offense over the T formation. You know questions that would have been relevant in the 1920s. MAYBE they can get him to talk about some current player or offensive scheme another team is running he really likes. He’s perfectly willing to have long conversations with those reporters and he’s happy as a clam. Notice who Welker kicked that field goal against? The Patriots. Bellicheck was like, “Sign that man immediately!”

When I was a kid, born in 1940, NFL kickers were also position players, line backer,tackle, something like that. Even Lou Groza, the man the kicking award in the NFL is named for, was a regular lineman most of his career.
