I hope you get to read this comment haha. But they purposely made the video for IDOL over-the-top and with gritty CG effects because it's their way of clapping back at people who said they're focusing on western promotions. They wanted to say whatever we do, you're going to call us idols anyway, so we're just going to do what we do and embrace what we are. They actually incorporated a LOT of Korean culture references in the MV because they wanted to show that they ARE Korean and they're proud of it. Their beat, though, is inspired by South African beats. I really think you should watch DKDKTV'S video Idol Explained. They really broke the lyrics and the cultural references down. 😊 Thank you so muuuuch! ❤

I mean there is a vid called who is bts by suga&spice. Which basically explains the backstory of them and each member individually. This vid really help with understanding about the group and the members. But it is quite a long vid (around the 30 minute mark). Well, Idol was the final part of the Love Yourself series. DNA was first (Love Youself: Her), then Euphoria (Love Yourself: Wonder), then Fake Love (Love Yourself: Tear), and finally IDOL (Love Yourself: Answer). There was a progression of a story through love. DNA is the beginnings of love where everything feels new and serendipitous, Euphoria is a continuation of that, Fake Love is realizing that you were changing who your true self was/hiding your true self to meet the other person's standards, and IDOL is recognizing that loving yourself for who you really are is more important than a love where you have to pretend. The DKDKTV explanation of this song helps a lot with unpacking the symbolism.

You know what’s super cool actually?? IDOL is kind of like an accumulation of their past videos. There are hints/scenes/visuals pulled from older videos as well as they incorporated small bits of choreography from those songs as well!! I think (and this is just personal) that they made IDOLs video crazy and colorful and loud because that’s exactly what ppl expect from Kpop. They are making a point not only with their lyrics (you can call me an IDOL I love myself-they used to struggle with being called idols actually) but also with the visuals! Just for you to know (if you don't) BTS have a serie of albums (Love yourself: HER, TEAR and ANSWER) and they tell a hole story about love, love other person, represent by DNA (love), but that wasn't a real love "( Fake Love )because they didn't love themself so yhe last one is love yourself: answer and they represent that with IDOL, this is the end of the saga, the answer of the story they create. Every video have a hole significate, and the lirycs are very important, there are theorys that explain the story

I love the new music video and album. It was so worth the wait and I found the music video very enjoyable to watch. Them boys never disappoint us ARMYs. I have been a fan of BTS for just over 3 years now and I still love all their songs. Normally, I get bored of a song after listening to it for a while, but I never get bored of BTS or any K-Pop group/artist’s songs. (Unless it is PSY’s music that is. I never was a fan of Gangnam style. 😂) K-Pop has honestly helped me through stressful times and has cheered me up so much through the years. I am not even ashamed of loving K-Pop.

There are of course other things that you would only get from watching other BTS videos but for the sake of time that one video would help you with this one video in this one way of understanding it.

It was interesting when you gave your insights as professional filmmakers for other videos. IDOL is an important video - it's not just a bunch of crazy colors and images. I agree with other recommendations that you watch DKDKTV - they do Korean explanations, rather than reactions. WooLara Company also gives a great Korean explanation along with her reaction. For professional commentary from a film editor, see Justin Odisho who did great videos on IDOL and Fake Love. He didn't know what a lot of the elements meant, but his commentary as an editor is unique and interesting. I recommend all of those if you'd like to understand the video better. The importance of this video is clear to anyone who is familiar with the narrative. Everything - everything - in IDOL means something. This is a culmination of everything before it. Some are clear references: the hanging crystal chandelier and the long table; identical dance moves from Save Me, DNA, Not Today; people criticized V's long blond hair - the doll with long, blond, yarn hair; people criticized V's wire glasses; people criticized RM for using silly filters; the shirt V is wearing - see Zack Sang's interview at BBMA. "K-Pop videos are so over the top." Those are definite references. BTS might be replying to is the racist comments about them including "they all look alike" and "they are so Korean" and "they should learn English." We can wonder why Jin takes V's place on the couch. We can notice that Jin is dancing front and center when he's not singing. I think it's a funny touch that Jin sings "I'm in love with myself" with his dreamy-eyed face when others said, "I love myself." We can notice V is rapping when he's wanted to for so long! I wonder is the giraffes are not just an African reference but also a reference to baepsae, crow-tits putting their hands up, a theme BTS likes to use. I've been wondering is anyone else thinks so. There is a lot more. They are looking back at what's brought them to where they are today. They don't need diss tracks anymore - they don't care what anyone thinks - they love themselves. I love this song and video! The things I've listed here are things people who follow BTS would know. There are lots of reactors that don't offer anything new. Thanks for the response. I think as filmmakers you can offer something really valuable that doesn't rely on knowing the references at all. The group of you said you'd have to watch a lot of videos to get all the references. Actually, you'd have to watch a lot of videos, trailers, 7 short films, and then watch them again - and again and still not get everything! (Knowing the literature, film, music, and Renaissance art references, and learning about Korean culture also helps! BTS goes really deep!) I think just knowing that nothing is random and that you just don't know the references a lot of your viewers know (and to respect that) is enough. So, they have this theme with their albums. DNA, Fake Love and IDOL are title tracks for each respective albums that are part of their Love Yourself Series. DNA is from Love Yourself : Her, and it represents the theme of falling in love and finding a love that feels like fate, destiny. But then, the theme progress to how sometimes when you love, you try so hard to please the other party and your love ends up being the reason you neglect your own true self, which is then became the theme for Fake Love as a part of Love Yourself : Tear. And IDOL concluded the Love Yourself Series as the title track of Love Yourself : Answer. It's when you finally realized that loving should come first for yourself. You need to love yourself first in order to have a healthy love for people. And in this title track, IDOL, BTS are talking about coming to terms with their status as idols which they struggled with for a long time because idols in Korea aren't regarded seriously as musician. RM & Suga got dissed and looked down by the hiphop community for taking the idol road. Thus, in this song, rather than telling people how to love yourself, BTS are showcasing an example of self acceptance, which is one of the keys for self love.

About BTS songs and their concept and messages in each songs, you know what, since you've been introduced to them, I'm happy to see that you guys were open to get to know them or atleast check out more of their stuffs. coz Boy, y'all are in for a treat. what's good is that They are pretty eccentric and flexible when it comes to their music (flow, how it sounds and what type of genre it would get into) every song from them sounds different and has different approach. they broke the generic Kpop image and everyone even in korea knows that respected that. and it was actually one of their target since day 1. also their music has been and always have deeper meanings and messages them. they either write their songs to help people deal with their daily struggles, life and such, or it can be a like a sentimental song in which people can relate to. they also write Happy and Ballad songs. They have Hip-Hop songs, Street Rap songs, Rock influenced songs, Funky ones, RnB vibe ones, Ballads and they're doing more and enjoys expanding their skills in both writing and producing better music. they never write Jibberish or senseless songs. I would highly suggest you guys watch their live performances and some of their Making of MV's shoots Vids. they have it here and don't worry Bighit don't do copyrights here. So you guys can react to live performances and their other videos. Also if you want to get to know the members and BTS struggles and such on how they started and grew there are videos made dedicated to them that you can maybe check out and react to if you guys want. BTS came from a humble start Which. like literally came from the bottom and these guys never had it easy. even now, they still face some of the same struggles they used to have when they we're just starting so I really hope you guys can check these videos out. If you want to know how any Kpop MV was filmed all you have to do is look up he Behind the sense/making of video. Almost all Kpop MVs have videos of the group on set as they are filming the MV and you get to see how everything was done and what it was like to be on set or on location while they were filming the video. You will be surprised that most of the time the sets and the things you see happening in the MV are practical. Yes they still use green screen and CGI when it is called for, but, in DNA for instance, most of the backgrounds and sets you see there were real. They actual spent the time to build the sets instead of taking a shortcut and using computer generated backgrounds. You will find that in Kpop companies spend a lot of time and effort on their videos and they avoid using shortcuts unless its because they are going for a certain look or feel to the video. You would be shocked at the amount of time and effort everyone puts in to each MV. Most MVs take on average 48 hours to shoot and they usually shoot 24 hours a day until they get all the shots and images they need for the video. These groups end up dancing the choreography over and over again until they are exhausted. Its all in the name of making amazing songs and videos. Far more time and effort goes into everything to do with Kpop than any western song or artist. Its not only a job but a lifestyle for these Kpop stars.

V (Taehyung) is the one that had the half blonde, half pink hair. And you are right when you said you would need to watch a lot more BTS videos for the full concept. From their first to the latest, there are references and tie ins, however, it's not necessary to enjoy them. Just some things become clearer when you know the full story, so to speak. Regarding the camera work, if you watch some of the behind the scenes stuff, it's a camera man doing a lot of running around. LOL Suga (Yoongi) the one with the blue hair in DNA complained about them dying their hair so much that it was damaging.
