Lol. It's so hard to guess the plots. They are amazing games but very convoluted. Half are prequels to MGS1 like 40 years before or so, a long while (MGS3, MGS Peace Walker and MGSV are all before MGS1. In fact they take place during the cold war and like late 70s, right after the cold war. The original MGS1 takes place in like 2005) and if you don't know that it adds to the confusion. And oh!! That young, blonde hair woman in the bikini.. She does sire the children of Big Boss (these children would be the main characters of MGS1 and up. Solid Snake, Liquid Snake the antagonist of most games, and more)

I've been a gamer for nearly 40 years, and was a game reviewer for over a decade of that. I was fortunate enough to play, write about, and analyze all of the Metal Gear Solid games when they originally came out. It's so interesting to see a newcomer try to piece together what this series is about just by the trailers, which is an impossible task. They're done specifically to show just a fraction of what's actually happening; there are so many more twists and layers to each of these games, and even the ones you figured out were the minor ones. What appears (at least in the beginning) as a simple stealth action game series explores themes of anti-war, criticism of the military industrial complex, government and corporate corruption, geopolitics, moral relativism, the impact of modern technological developments, the role of mass media, sacrifice, bioethics, genetics, destiny, generational trauma, terrorism vs freedom, duty vs desire, loyalty vs betrayal, ideals vs disillusionment, truth vs propaganda, naivety vs responsibility, the self-destructive nature of revenge, the dangers of ambition, the deliberately surreal nature of video games, the all-too meta nature of sequels as a concept... All wrapped up with some of the most polished gameplay and bizarre/entertaining/memorable characters you'll ever see. I _wish_ I could get into this (especially MGS2 and 3) without spoiling the plots, but I don't want to spoil anything for you. The less you know going in, the better. If you don't want to play the games, you can find all of the games' cutscenes (and even non-commentary playhroughs) on KZbin. The Metal Gear Solid series is one of the most cinematic in all of gaming, so you can actually watch them as if they were long movies.
@babyoli

So you're an OG gamer Poly (like me)!! I feel like we can nerdgasm on a few things lol. I can appreciate that, and thanks for your "high level" breakdown haha. I would love to read your review but AFTER i watch some of the cinematics. Definitely going to give another guess of the games from watching the cinematics and I think I'll get a better sense of what's going on. I think one of the comments talked about the truth vs. propaganda and I was thinking in today's age, that resonates a lot with me lol (I think our world today is super corrupt). But paste it! I'll check it out! Thanks for watching and sharing your story 🤗

@@babyoli Oh, if I cut and paste any of my reviews here directly, the character limit would be reached instantly. I wrote in long-form essay format, none of that clickbait stuff you see today. I won lots of writing contests, and had a huge readership that got me over 2 million views just by word of mouth. Those pre-social media years were great, when people still had attention spans... Anyway, I tried linking to an old archive of a couple of reviews here and posting. However, this caused KZbin's autocensor to shadowban me, so I'll have to figure out a way around it. The archive is on Game Frequently Asked Questions; I can't type out how the site is _actually_ spelled, because the abbreviated form of "Frequently Asked Questions" _also_ gets hit with KZbin's autocensor. Unbelievable... Anyway, just search for the site and my handle, "Polymathic"; my works are easy to find. I've also spent lots of time methodically going through each game in the series (as well as many others!) and posting all the secrets and tricks I could find. I also recently posted tons of info on the site for RE4 Remake, so finding my profile should be pretty easy. I'll hold off writing anything else until you see some more of the series. And yeah, there are certain aspects of Metal Gear Solid that resonate much stronger today than they did 20 years ago. I can't explain which ones without spoiling it, but let's just say that the story was _incredibly_ prescient.

As a big MGS fan, I enjoyed your reaction! I think the part that confused you the most is that there are multiple Snakes (hard to tell from the trailers for sure lol). MGS 3 and 5 are period pieces as well, which is why there were cassette tapes used. Rather than being genetically modified, Solid Snake (the main character of the series) is the clone of the Snake from MGS 3, which is set in 1964.

Let me break it down really simply; A woman named Boss trained a soldier named Big Boss aka Jack aka Naked Snake, who was cloned at least 4 times and they at various points were given the codenames; Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, Venom Snake and Solidus Snake (the former's name is David). Solid Snake is the main series protagonist, except in the Metal Gear Solid 2 (in which Raiden is the star who is also named Jack), as well as MGS3, MGS5 and Metal Gear Portable Ops, Peace Walker and Metal Gear Ground Zeroes (in which either Big Boss or Venom Snake star). The series follows the conflict between Big Boss and Major Tom aka Zero aka Cipher (aka the unit leader of special forces Fox of which Big Boss was a part) as they try to interpret and honour the legacy of their mentor Boss. At some point Big Boss starts a militia and threatens the world with Nuclear destruction using a Metal Gear (a bipedal tank that can launch Nuclear Weapons), his clone Solid Snake kills him (or at least he thinks he did back in the original Metal Gear game). Major Tom is still alive but creates a giant AI system that gets out of hand and attempts to take over and regulate the world (including armed conflict). Then there's a spin off game about Raiden fighting Senator Armstrong (some decades after Raiden killed the President of the United States who turned out to be Solidus)... who has supercharged himself with nanomachines... Got it?... No? Don't worry the plot was written by a mad man.

MGS-1- All the protagonists are part of the US military, specifically a unit called FOX-hound, a specialised unit full of the best of the best. The girl who helps you is Meryl, who was there undercover. And the genome soldiers are failed attempts at cloning Big Boss, which is why they suck. Solid and Liquid are perfected clones and direct children. The terrorists are threatening everyone with nukes that can be fired from Metal Gear Rex, a giant robot with a nuke-railcannon. The guy with no name is Gray Fox, a good friend of Solid that Solid believed he killed during a big battle in Metal Gear, one of the NES/SNES games, that take place before MGS. MGS-2- The Tech guy with the parrot is Hal Emmerich also known as Otacon, he was forced into building Rex and now works with Snake to destroy all Metal Gears. The big base is called Big Shell, officially it's a facility that cleans the water, but actually it's Metal Gear Arsenal, a massive storage facility for dozens of Metal Gear Rays that Raiden, the white-haired guy fights alone. Also the mission Raiden is on was supposed to mimic MGS 1 so that the Patriots could train Raiden into being just as capable as Solid Snake. There's a huge mindfuck section near the end of the game that has Raiden questioning reality. It doesn't help when Snake points at his bandanna and says "Infinite ammo." In response to Raidens question about if he's ready for the final section. Snake is a major troll. It runs in the family. MGS-3- This is a prequel about Big Boss set during the cold war. The major thing here is that The Boss is actually fully dead, she's the final boss. And Eva, the bikini girl, uses Boss to steal the Philosophers legacy, which is basically just a tiny data chip that leads to a gazillion dollars. All Metal Gears fire nukes, that's their Raison D'etre. This game explains why Big Boss becomes a villain, his plan is just to give purpose to soldiers who have nothing left because the government is run by asshats who will send thousands to their death to line their pockets. MGS4- The Cyborg is Raiden, he gets messed up by The Patriots, the secret background Antagonists. Now he's about 90% Cybernetic. You state that Liquid might be behind everything... No-one actually knows it that's true. Ocelot, one of the recurring antagonists from the first and third game, claims to be possessed by his arm, which was transplanted to him from Liquid Snakes corpse. Everybody has Nanomachines and if you don't have permission to fire a weapon you can't so fighting is much harder. This game actually only takes place a few years after two, it's just that Nanomachines and Clones don't mix well so Snake rapidly ages before dying at the end of the game. MGR:R- Raiden is the protagonist and it's set a little while after MGS4. He's a member of Maverick, a Private Military Company. That black dude is the politician Raiden is supposed to protect and the same one who starts calling him Mr.Lightning Bolt as a joke. Cyborgs are becoming much more prevalent, but they're separate from Nanomachines. Raidens actual objective is saving children from a horrific experiment to create more copies of Raiden, who was a child soldier with a higher body count than god. They rip the kids brains out of their head, put them in jars and subject them to constant VR missions, zapping their pleasure centre when they kill someone to brainwash them into enjoying killing. Just like Raiden. MGS5- Another prequel about Big Boss. Ground Zeroes is a fully paid demo, you actually save Kojima In-game, "What took you so long." Phantom Pain is the actual game. The man on fire is just a weird mutant. I kinda forgot who that is. And the absolute greatest bit of genius on your part. In this game you do actually play as a body double of BB. Not the real BB. Your expert opinion is expert level.

Ill try to sum it up, the guy shown in the first game is called solid snake, he was a clone of snake (aka big boss aka jack, the guy with one arm) now jack, used to work for usa, but then he was hired to kill boss (the woman in white in mgs 3) he did it, and that's how he got the name big boss, because he killed boss, but he couldn't cope with the fact that he just killed the dearest person to him for a bunch of old men, so he turned his back on america, but nah, they wont let him go just like that, they cloned two versions of him, liquid snake and solid snake, now these two didn't have the same life, liquid went through a lot and ended being the opposite of solid snake, but anyways, the story is amazing, metal gear has it all.

to grossly oversimplify: MGS1 = Die Hard/The Rock/any tom clancy novel with some elements taken from sci fi stuff like Ghost in the Shell in aesthetics. MGS2 = MGS2 similar aesthetics to MGS1 but instead of Ghost in the Shell, Kojima probably watched Serial Experiments Lain this time. MGS3 = Sean Connery/Roger Moore era james bond + Rambo + Xmen in the jungle, after the last two mostly urban environment games this one is a big change of pace, also IMO the strongest and most well paced narrative and gameplay wise of the entire series. MG Peace Walker is essentially the Sequal to 3 and leans into the CIA doing dodgy things in the 70s, think Call of Duty Cold War/Black Ops type stuff, MGS4 = Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 with extra melodrama, its more like a movie then the rest and is the full conclusion to the series (atleast for snake). MGS5 = Rambo 3 in Afghanistan mixed with the book 1984 (which it also takes place in). MG Rising is Raidens spinoff set after MGS4 and probably the biggest meme game, highly entertaining because it doesnt take itself too seriously.

I laughed my ass off at the mgs2 substance trailer reaction because it’s showing all the new side content, which out of context must be extremely jarring to see Godzilla sized enemies and snake on a skateboard 😂😂😂 You got a surprising amount right given the convoluted nature of the franchise to even the people that played em. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is a remake of Metal Gear Solid 1. Let me see if I can help you a bit to understand a bit on how the MAIN Metal Gear games are ordered. Keep in mind that the story order is not the same as the release order. The series has two overarching arcs. The Big Boss arc and the Solid Snake arc. Each arc takes place over a number of years and the Big Boss arc influences the events of the Solid Snake arc. Big Boss arc: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Solid Snake arc: Metal Gear Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake Metal Gear Solid/Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a spinoff starring a different character named Raiden, who was introduced in MGS2 as a second playable character and who later made an important appearance in MGS4. The gameplay is clearly very different and focused on aggressive combat, but it can also be played using some familiar stealth elements.

@@babyoli Adding onto what @buhlemanwane4467 said, the Snake in MGS5 is also Big Boss. There are actually four games featuring him set in the Cold War (MGS3, Portable Ops, Peace Walker, and MGS5). Or I guess five if you treat Ground Zeroes separate from The Phantom Pain. I suppose you could think of Big Boss as kind of like the Anakin/Darth Vader of the series. A foil for his clone son in the games set during the 21st Century, whose story sees him go from hero to villain. Though there is a pretty big twist about him in The Phantom Pain's endgame... Also The Twin Snakes is actually a Gamecube remake of MGS1. You might have noticed it had a similar snowy setting as the first trailer.

The other half of the story focuses on the secret elite agency known as Fox Hound: specifically on “Snake” who’s life and destiny where shaped for him since before even his birth, and him trying to do what’s right as the perfect soldier while contemplating the job over his own needs.

So basically Naked Snake/Big boss (John) started some messy war shit. That's where Solid Snake (David) comes in to fix everything. And then Raiden (Jack/Technically "A" Snake) got dragged into all of this cause reasons, he continues the work Solid Snake left behind.

Oli - you got a few points correct. However, Metal Gear Peace Walker comes in after MGS 3 and is an integral part of the story. That is where you are introduced to Paz, and why you should care about her. There is basically two stories going on- the one that follows Big Boss, as you stated he kills the Boss to earn the title. And because that mission came from the US, he left them behind. Fox was the original organization which became Fox Hound, which he helped organize. As far as Ground Zeros, yes he goes to rescue her because she knows the location of their base. Big Boss has gone his own way, and doing his own missions. She does end up dead after giving up the info under torture, they ambush Big Boss and company and he ends up in a coma. That is where the Phantom Pain picks up. You were correct about X-O-F being a splinter group. As far as your reaction- you picked the wrong Phantom Pain trailer, that wasn't the first one, which is why its so hard to understand. The first one gives way more clarity. I totally understand why its not something you would want to play. Its tailored toward guys like most games are. The one you liked was with Raiden, who is a character introduced in MGS 2. And some fans hated him, because it was a bait and switch of characters. But now, like all things he has grown on the audience. And yes, he has become a bit of a badass, especially when he becomes a cyborg ninja. The game you like is Metal Gear Revengeance. And yeah, its fun to play, and got some really cool scenes. But like I said, there are two main characters, Big Boss who is the original Snake, and Solid Snake, who is his "son" so to speak, or cloned from his genetics to be the ultimate soldier. So yeah, not bad.

Whoo hoo thanks Leon. If you have the link to the first MGSV trailer, paste it! I would be interested to understand this burning man integration lol still confused about that. No answers 😅 I think what I've gathered from the comments that most people like Raiden. I'm probably going to check that one out because... I've kinda alluded it gives me Nier Automata feels. I am kinda into shooters now not too much. Probably just played lots of Counter Strike and Destiny haha but yeah more into RPGs think that's why Revengeance seems up my alley. Thanks for your input! And thanks for watching 🤗

@@babyoli Here's a couple trailers below to MGS5 that give better context. That game was hit and miss for me. Because when it was released, the story wasn't a finished product, and that is why some things like the "Man on fire" are not well explained. But those of us who have played the series a while know that its Volgin from MGS3 who got struck by a bolt of lightning. But the gag about the Man on fire, is that you can take him out with a water gun. No, I'm not kidding. There's a mission where you have to take him out to proceed. At the beginning of the game, its explained that your character after coming out of the coma, has shrapnel in his skull, and it cannot be removed because he would die. The doctor further explains that he will have hallucinations because of the metal pressing on his brain. Hence why some scenes just make no sense whatsoever. What is real funny, is you can beat up your teammates, and they will thank you for the "training". And no, you don't hold a gun and a knife at the same time in the field. That is not CQC. That's being an idiot. I'm not a big shooter gamer either. I don't need to play Call of Duty, I actually lived through two years in the sandbox, (Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq) And that was enough for me, nothing beats American soil. I'm intrigued where they take the FF7 Remake part 2. I really enjoy the FF series in general. That is more my style. Anyhow, glad to have found your channel and look forward to other reactions. So the Metal Gear saga is split into two different eras, the Big Boss era and the Solid Snake era. The Big Boss era takes place in the '60s-'70s and is covered in the games MGS 3 Snake Eater, maybe Portable Ops if you count that, Peace Walker, and MGS V Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain, following the man known as Big Boss, regarded as the greatest soldier in the world. This man would become the template for who Solid Snake would become, quite literally, as it's revealed that Solid Snake is 1 of several clones of Big Boss. Big Boss, despite his title of the greatest soldier, grew to despise those he worked for due to what they had him do to someone close to him, and thus worked to build up his own army, one without allegiance to any countries, one without borders. This army would become known as Outer Heaven. Then there's the Solid Snake era, covered in the games Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 4, Rising takes place after 4, but in terms of Snake's story, 4 is the conclusion of it all. Throughout Snake's story, he first had to take down Big Boss, the final boss of Metal Gear 1 and 2, then he has to contend with his brother, another clone created from Big Boss, known as Liquid Snake, who has a long-standing rivalry with Solid Snake and despises Big Boss for apparently looking down on him for being genetically inferior. There's also Solidus Snake, a 3rd clone of Big Boss and the main antagonist of MGS 2, he's a perfect clone of Big Boss and is fighting against a larger conspiracy that has the country in it's grasp, the methods at which he's fighting it is the conflict of the story. Then there's the enigmatic man known as Revolver Ocelot, who shows up in both eras, as a young Red Beret and an old gunslinger who works for an unknown force in the shadows of the conspiracy, he also served as one of Big Boss's most trusted allies, he would turn out to be the final boss in Snake's journey in MGS 4, now taking the name of Liquid Ocelot. There's also Raiden, who is first introduced as a second protagonist in MGS 2, you play him for most of the game, it's actually a big twist that you mainly play him and not so much as Snake, which ruffled many feathers at the time. He then returned in 4 as the cyborg ninja we all are familiar with, and his shining moment is in Rising when he becomes the main focus, it was this and 4 that made people really warm up to Raiden after the infamous bait and switch in 2. Yeah, it's a series you really gotta take the time to wrap your head around, but it's an incredible story well worth investing time into. Also, side note, Kojima did NOT direct a ton of Silent Hill games, he ONLY directed PT/Silent Hills, the people behind the beloved titles in Silent Hill were Team Silent, while Kojima had been in Konami at the time, he wasn't really involved in Silent Hill, not until he started work on PT and Silent Hills, which as we all know, got cancelled.

You should defintely play these games and make videos commenting on the plot after each one. It would be great to see your reactions to the actual plot. You got a lot correct, pretty much everything it was possible to get from the trailers. But that's like 5% of what's really there.
