This is a good example of Maiden, but I would dispute the claim that it is the very best of their output. Whlist it is up there with their best, I prefer 'Run to the Hills', 'Inavders', 'Revelations' and some others over this one.

Like that album alone with the lyrics and story's on that album are amazing! Stranger in a strange land, though not crazy in it's elements the songs structure with the lyrics of the Iceman being thawed is phenomenal! And wasted years is in my top 10 Maiden songs so I'm kinda biased.

By the way, a few years ago the Iron Maiden Fan Club asked their membership if they had to choose ONE song to introduce someone to the band, the song that epitomizes what the band is all about, what song would that be? Rime of the ancient mariner of iron maiden is compositionally a lot more complex I’d say - definitely worth a listen, although I believe a lot irons maidens work is generally in e minor

My impression of why it is considered one of the best metal songs or even the best metal song ever is, that basically no metal-head dislikes this song. For one reason or the other, almost all metal fans can agree that they like or even love it - across sub-genres and generations. For some, it's the lyrics, for some it's Bruce Dickinson's voice, for some it's the harmonizing guitars, for some it's the storytelling that is not only reflected in the lyrics but also in the instrumental section (The turmoil of the soul, while the caracter struggles with his faith and fate.), for some it's how fantastic their experience has been, to enjoy it live. (As you mentioned, the execution is on-point. Therefore, the song dos not suffer live. To the contrary, the members put on a real show, so many consider their live performances even better than thier studio recordings). While the last point is true for all Iron Maiden songs, it is especially poignant for some more so than for others. And Hallowed be Thy Name is one of those that particularly stick out live.

There are what many consider the 4 big voices of metal music in the 80's. Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Geoff Tate of Queensrÿche and Ronnie James Dio of Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and DIO. You need to cover all of them for multiple songs. My favorite song for reactions is The live in Tokyo version of Queensrÿche's Take Hold of the Flame.

Same since 82 I started with killers and than Dickenson joined I was almost at the beginning iron maiden self titled came out ,I do disagree with this guy alot but music is opinion but this songs 41 years old and sounds like it was made yesterday it deserves a solid 9 and I look at production as what the band had to do with what money they had at the time so I give production a 9 but maybe he was born with a Silverstone but maiden grew up poor and challenge life for music all or nothing like metallica and other musicians imagine killers did not make them rich for production anyhow up the Irons

I started with Killers and Di'Anno as well. Took me a minute to get into Dickinson's vocals but it didn't take long before I was on board. From the time I was little I loved all kinds of story-telling songs (from Lightfoot to Rainbow and Uriah Heep) and Maiden made my world a lot bigger musically. Iron Maiden will always be part of me. I even tattoo'd the symbol onto my ankle at 16. I had to count out the years when he said 40 years old.... wow. Maiden is aging a lot better than I am. LOL

Neither one knew much about Iron Maiden, but they were in awe at the musicianship, showmanship, and theatrics of these "old guys." On their feet and banging heads the whole show. In my veins. I can't get enough of this band. Even decades later I keep rediscovering songs and listening to them differently that I used to. They have literally dozens and dozens of absolute bangers. Their first 7 albums are special. The way you listen to music I think you will enjoy the seventh of those seven albums aptly named Seventh son of a seventh son. Infinite dreams is beautiful and is my current obsession along with the evil that men do. Title track is wicked too. I love Bruce but it's the music for me. When they get going and it all blends so incredibly it makes me emotional. Crazy feeling

Love your in depth review and presentation. That alone has earned you my sub. Like many others have said Iron Maiden is a live band and perhaps or even more likely the best live metal band. Take in consideration they have nearly clocked up 50yrs of live performing. The studio albums are good, but the live performance is where the songs excel and truly come alive. Once you review a live performance you will see and hear for yourself. As for this particular song, yes it is one of the best, not neccesarily "The Best" or their best. At the time yes it was the best, but their has been 40 years of other stuff since then and this song still stacks up. Any Maiden song is worthy of review. "Pashendale" or "Empire Of The Clouds" (studio versions) are two very good songs often over looked by most reviewers in favour of more established "click bait" titles. Most Iron Maiden songs are historically based so some brief background knowledge will add valuable context and understanding. Looking forward to the next one and in the meantime will look over your previous reviews.

First, I like the breakdown process, subscribed. Now, it’s May 3rd, 1983, I’m on the school bus going home. I’m in the 3rd grade. A 7th grader had a “boombox” to play music on the way home. Up to this point my musical life had two types of music, Country and Western. Marty Robbins and I were besties. But then I heard it, a sound that hit me in my soul, and rattled it. The cassette he was playing was Iron Maiden “The Number of the Beast.” The guitars, the drums, (didn’t realize it at the time) the bass lines, and the vocals. And all of Hell rejoiced for a new Metalhead was born that day. To this day, 40 years later, I still know every word to every song on that release. Now I love “Hallowed be Thy Name,” but it’s not the song that changed my world forever. It is a blueprint song for a lot of concept albums that came after it though, so that can be added to its greatness. The song that changed my life on this album was the title track “The Number of the Beast.” I’ll let you find the nuances, but understand it change the life of a nine year old, so think about that. Because “Hallowed Be Thy Name,” was played before and I tuned it out. Just an idea. And one last note Stephen Harris is the reason I learned to play the bass.

There's a lot to think about when listening to early Iron Maiden. And it's that they come from a time when a new wave of heavy metal was emerging. What these bands had in common was that they took the energy and simplicity of the punk scene and combined it with the bombast of the metal/rock scene from the 70s (UFO, KISS, rainbow). Which created for the time something new and exciting. Coh there, Iron Maiden took the music to new heights that would later be further developed by other influential bands, including Metallica. Halloween by thy name is probably the most influential song from the early 80s. And many in the metal scene have taken direct inspiration from the song. When it comes to song structure, dramatic feel, etc.

If you haven't heard any Nightwish songs before, and would like to go down the ribbit hole of symphonic metal, check out and review their 2013 Wacken live concert. Start in the order of their set list. Floor Jansen's vocals will make your jaw drop. The song writing by Tuomas is unmatched anywhere in any genre. Be prepared to grow your subscriber list exponentially if you do, because the Nightwish Army will come out in force and make their presence known.

I think you need to build up to Ghost Love Score after listening to other songs of theirs first. Nightwish would never open a concert with Ghost Love Score, that’s why I suggested watching the Wacken 2013 concert in order of their set list.

Another Maiden song worth checking out for studio would probably be something like Empire of the Clouds. It's their longest song, clocking in at over 18 minutes, uses extended piano parts not found elsewhere in their catalogue and was never performed live. Regarding live performances, well, obviously checking out the performance of Hallowed Be Thy Name from the Live After Death album, recorded at the Long Beach Arena in 1985, would be on top of the list, just for comparison. Most people would recommend the Hammersmith Odeon performance from 1982 though. And then, a song that has to be experienced live because the studio version can't compare to it in the slightest, is Fear of the Dark. Most people would agree that the best live version to check out here is the Rock in Rio one from 2001.

Check out Alexander the Great, Paschendale, or Rime of the Ancient Mariner. There are so many!! If you want a true, blistering metal song……go with Judas Priest Painkiller. Rime of the ancient mariner and Empire of the clouds both really good Iron maiden songs , both really really long. the thing about hallowed be thy name and why it sums up metal so well, is the song serves as a big metaphore for ostricization. being the out cast is somehtign the vast majority of metal heads have felt , and even if they don't realize it subconsiously , this is why this song is so relatable to so many metal heads. at face value it's a song about a condemned man awaiting his execution , it doesn't say he's guilty or not , o0r even what he is accused of. it just touches on the emotions and feelings of that condemtion, the saae sort of thoughts and mental processes that go through a person's mind when they are ostricized by society in general. PS and dude seriously , people need to stop this shit about martin wrecking with a bus of nuns. it's bullshit exageration . in a 85-86 interview he (martin birch) said the wreck was with a black man that came off as very religious to him durring the incident as the man got out of his car and was praying. and some how that morphed into "he wrecked with a bus full of nuns".

As far as the repetitive part, metal was amazing live not just recorded. They wrote these songs with the live performance in mind, and that repetitive part gives them time to run around and play the audience.

A lot of metal really shines in live performances, because they can reproduce the doctored and repaired recordings without electronic aid. Plus the way most of these great bands interact with the fans and the energy of them running around while still performing these great songs. You want vocals, I think you’ll enjoy some OG Skid Row with Sebastian Bach or OG Queensrych with Geoff Tate.

Talking about the solo, both the guitars actually solo on all of their tracks. The seamless hand offs between them is pure poetry, even now at the age of 60+ they can still nail it on both recorded and live. To really appreciate Iron Maiden you need to watch tracks from their concerts. Bit of trivia to add, Bruce Dickenson was a world class fencer and turned down the chance to fight at the olympics to instead complete their world tour they were on at the time.

Ah. Production is a special thing for most metal bands. Not because they don't care for it. Many metal bands still carry the notion that what goes on the album should be played live, if practical. An insane amount of practise goes into being able to preform live, under all conditions. It's a matter of pride and honesty! If you can't pull it off live it better not go on the album. This is, imho, also why many metalbands often sound better live.

Since you are a Neil Diamond fan and are exploring finer metal bands, I invite you to give a 70s/80s hard rock band called "UFO" a listen; The vocalist, Phil Mogg possesses a smooth silky voice very reminiscent of Neil Diamond, which may seem out of place in a hard rock/metal genre, but works surprisingly well. I suggest the tracks "Love To Love" & "Try Me" from their 1977 "Lights Out" album. Enjoy.

A few years ago, when my daughter not quite 4 years old, my wife and I took her and her little brother to a local "air show". There were a few things happening in the air, but mostly it's walking around all the old, neat planes parked on the taxiway at a municipal airport. Some were WWII vintage, and there was a trainer for the RAF. My little girl noticed the RAF paint and badge and out of nowhere started loudly singing "Run! Live to fly! Fly to live! Do or Die! Won't you Run! Live to Fly! Fly to Live! Aces High!" Several people heard that and some seemed perplexed, but there were several dads, a teenager and a cop with giant grins beaming smiles and nodding at us. I joined in and we repeated the chorus together, loudly. Never felt better as a dad than that moment!

Iron Maiden is one of my favorite bands from childhood. I love the lyricism, the story telling and their avoidance of the typical themes in music. I am happy to see new people discovering songs, and bands that I have enjoyed for years. I do agree that this song in particular does get repetitive, and that detracts from it to a degree. In the name of suggesting something with a more dynamic composition, I will also mention that “Metal” has innumerable sub-genres, each with its own sound. One of my favorites is symphonic metal. The band Nightwish is one of the best. I recommend their performance of “Ghost Love Score” live at the Waken music festival in 2013. I think your musical senses will be delighted by it.

The thing that you are missing is seeing them LIVE. I took a group of friends last year to see Iron maiden for their first time and they literally cried. Nothing like it. Context is everything! This came out in 1982, it strongly influenced later developments in the genre. But I get what you mean, many _Iron Maiden_ songs have 4 repeated movements, when 3 would have been plenty.

This must've come up on my KZbin homepage because I'm a Maiden fan. I really liked your reaction and review. You got my subscription now, if for no other reason than you are cool enough to review Maiden! Listen to and watch this song live. I think that will start to give you a better feel for why it's one of the very greatest, if not the very greatest (in my humble opinion lol), metal songs of all time. Maiden is my fave band, has been since the mid 80s, so I've seen them live 47 times since then (trying to get to 50 before they quit lol). Have never seen a performance that wasn't exceptional. All of that is just to illustrate to you that you can pick any of the many live clips of this song on KZbin and you'll be good. Flight 666, Rock in Rio, El Vivo, Maiden England, Live After Death, and others are good quality recordings of the concerts. More Maiden, please!

I’m a musician too & a long time Maiden fan. Somewhere in Time was my first concert at 10 years old. My main instrument is the bass. Although this song isn’t necessarily overly complex, its one of my favorites to play but don’t judge Maiden by one song. They have very complex & highly difficult pieces that sound just as awesome as this one. I always loved how they layer the instruments & each has a role in the tapestry of the songs. Not many metal bassists dance in and around the guitar harmonies like Steve Harris(the bands founder) does. Recommended songs: Im going to list some that I haven’t sen 1,000 times on other channels -Revelations off Piece of Mind -Phantom of the Opera- Self Titled -Heaven Can Wait- Somewhere in Time -Wrathchild- Killers -Run Silent Run Deep- No Prayer for the Dying Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner- Watch the live version from their World Slavery Tour 1984 which is the recording for Live After Death. The theatrics are awesome as well as this 13 minute masterpiece

Full disclosure: Iron Maiden is my favorite band of all time. The intro from the song "Deja Vu" from the "Somewhere in Time" album is what inspired me to pick up a guitar and learn to play some myself. If you're interested in a more contemporary direction in metal, I've recently come to love a band out of Italy named Frozen Crown. If you like "Hallowed be Thy Name", check out their track "Neverending".

Also love the lyrics that make you think ... they are especially passionate about history, mythology and literature and incorporate it into their lyrics. For me, I personally prefer Run To The Hills, The Trooper, Flight Of Icarus, Revelations, Powerslave, Aces High, Rime Of Yhe Ancient Mariner, Wasted Years, Can I Play With Madness?, Fear Of The Dark live in Spain I think it was is incredible. Great job. I’m gonna enjoy watching you get turned on to Metal. Some bands I’d suggest would be Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Metal Church, Manowar, WASP, OZZY OSBOURNE, Dio, Black Sabbath, The Scorpions, Accept, Judas Priest, Warlock, Testament, KISS, and Riot just to name bands with awesome catalogues. You should check out Maiden's "Pachendale". I'm a retired Soldier who has more than a few combat deployments. "Pachendal" (from the album Dance of Death); from some reason helps me deal with my PTSD and survivor's guilt. Maiden has always had a penchant for composing historical pieces. Not for dunces. To quote vocalist Bruce Dickinson in his book "What Does This Button Do": "Iron Maiden fans are quite used to engaging their brains." Up The Irons!

If you'd like to try a metal song that is both very musically complex and also includes features of more extreme metal subgenres, I'd recommend "Time" by Wintersun from their live session at Sonic Pump Studios. I think you'd appreciate it. They also self-publish, and the band has been known to share reaction videos on Facebook occasionally (their drummer and one of their former guitarists have even commented on them), so you don't need to worry about them being blocked. Something to note if you watch it is that you will hear a lot of synthesizer tracks, even though there's no keyboardist. The lead singer/guitarist records all of those and does all the mixing himself.

I just watched your reaction to Nightwish' Ghost Love Score (and commented to it as well). But it was Iron Maiden with the albums "Piece Of Mind" and "The Number of the Beast" (where this song is the last track of the album) that lead my path into Metal. I was 13 years old when I got "piece of mind" on Casette(!), and 14 when I bought "TNOTB"-CD. "Hallowed By Thy Name" is still one of my top 10 songs ever.. and I have passed 45 years on this planet. But the title track on this album is the most known Iron Maiden song. Fun Fact1: Bruce Dickinson is a fencer. He has 2 world championchip silver medals, and two bronze medals in the European championchip. And a 5th place on the olympics 2000.(Google it). Fun Fact2: Bruce Dickinson is a Pilot. For big commercial aircraft. He often captains the Flight 666. again google it (google just said that he has stopped piloting). Fun Fact3: Bruce Dickinson is a nerd in the history of commuting in Great Britain. I once saw a National Geographic show about Britain's Train history where Bruce was both the narrator and the expert. Bruce Dickinson is an amazing and higly intelligent human beeing. But as a Life Long Metal Fan: This song is NOT the greatest Metal song ever. Whoever told you that hasn't been listening to much else.

Really love the format of the video, and the knowledgeable break down, got an immediate subscribe... I would highly recommend something like 'Diary of a madman' by Ozzy Osbourne as it has a lot of compositionally interesting elements. Also as others have mentioned listening to the studio versions of Maiden only gives you half the picture... but still great for a composition breakdown.

Brother, you are talking about the highest classic of all classic here. ( and by the way, nice Bee Gees poster in the background, I love them too ). My very first contact with metal was exactly this album, back in 1984 when I was just 14. Before, I was on pop stuff, like Bee Gees, Michael Jackson, Prince, and etc. The number of the beast was like a portal that just opened above my head and took me straight to another dimension. Its diabolical guitar leads from Murray tossed my brain inside my skull like a washing machine. That's what I can recall from those days. From that day, I was never the same again. I'm a proud metalhead for life since, and Im also big fan of Death Metal and Black Metal. My entire life was focused in Metal till the point I became a guitar player and jumped head first into a band.... - Metal is not for everyone.... is just for the chosen ones who were blessed enough to understand the spirit of it !

Dude! You absolutely need to hear the live version from 1982! Bit of trivia for you, when the 1982 live version happened, Bruce Dickinson hadn't even sung this song with the band yet live, AND the album hadn't dropped yet -- so when he sang this song in 1982, people had no idea what to expect. And as a result, this song became one of the most iconic songs, from one of the most iconic bands, of all time. To put it mildly, no band had done what this band has done since then, with a live performance, and I can think of two that come close: Nightwish at Wacken 2013; and ManowaR, when they had over million people all singing along at once. Sabaton comes close as well, with their live version of 40:1 in 2012.

I would suggest a sixth category to add to your reviews; where possible how it is performed live. Most great metal sounds better live unlike a lot of artists that use a lot of in studio editing and tricks to produce a clean track but woefully fall down in the performance. Love the reaction and the honesty when reviewing. We metal fans can be very protective of the music and bands that we love so i appreciate you having the courage to give an honest review. Keep it up

I was lucky enough to see them 3 times from 82-87 each time was a different experience and some of the best live performances I have seen. I am a hard rock fan and have gone to over 200 shows and Iron Maiden is near the top of greatest bands ever, I could name several songs from each album but The Trooper, and Number of the Beast of popular reactions other metal best vocals Queensryche Take hold of the Flame live from Japan, some goto metal songs Pantera Cowboys from Hell, Megadeath My Darkest Hour Judas Priest The Sentinal enjoyed the breakdown look forward to more
