For some reason, people are confused as to why these videos don't get uploaded at 60fps (1080p60). I don't even upload videos at 30fps. I upload at 25. Here is why: If I film one second of time at 1000fps and play it back at 25fps. That one second I just filmed will take 40 seconds to play back (40x slower) because 1000/25=40. If I then take the same second that I just filmed and played it back at 60fps, it would only take 16 seconds to play back (16x slower) because 1000/60=16.6. The whole point of the channel is showing stuff slow. If I have the choice of playing something back 40x slower than your eye can see or 16x slower, I'm obviously going to pick 40x slower. That is also the reason I upload at 25fps and not 30fps. When it comes down to it, slow motion comes from the relationship between filming speed and play back speed. If filming speed is higher than playback speed, you get slow motion. If filming speed is slower than playback speed, you get time lapse. Taking that to the extreme, if I shot something at 1000fps and played it back at 1000fps, it would be the same as watching it in real time. Hope that clears it up for you. -Gavin

For those who don't know what non Newtonian Liquid is, it's a special mixture that gets more solid the more force is applied to it. This specific liquid they made has a short name, Oobleck. It could run through your fingers like a liquid but can bounce the force of a hammer like a solid. It's kinda like silly putty. You can see the solid in action when Dan tries to get it out.

Not necessarily. A non-newtonian fluid can also be the reverse, where it acts more like a fluid the more force you apply to it. Non-newtonian just means that the viscosity isn't constant (like water for example).

Everything acts more like a fluid the more force you apply to it. You apply enough force to metal, and it will act like a fluid. Pretty much all matter exists in one of the common states like gas/liquid/solid, at a given pressure and temperature. You apply enough force to even water and its viscosity won't be constant. Under enough pressure, and water will actually turn into special forms of ice.

If anyone, definetely not Slo Mo Guys. With this kind of fps you only get around 4-5 seconds of footage before the storage is full, I'd guess maybe 1 terabyte. At 60 fps that would mean 1-2 seconds of footage. Not really a good tradeoff.

Cool stuff as always! It could be interesting to see the same effect of a non Newtonian liquid being poured onto an already vibrating surface (speaker or flat white surface on a speaker). Unlike in the current clip, I imagine the liquid would completely stick together never bonding with the lower surface, hovering and dancing. A few different colours could also be interesting especially if one was made with an oil base and another with a water base.

strikeforcecommander Yes, 1 sec is 1 sec but this has nothing to do with slow mo footages. Try this: Play a 60 fps vid at 30 and 60 fps. You'll see the difference, if you play it at 30 fps, it will twice as slow as at 60. G.

If you don't know, non-newtonian fluid basically is solid and liquid. Slapping it makes it solid, but slowly swishing it makes it smooth.

Reminds me of a few years ago, I was mixing some powder, a fluorescent red pigment, into water by hand, in an open head drum, with a canoe paddle. For a while it was far from Newtonian, quite dilatant. If I pulled the paddle out partway, the liquid would stick to it and then break with ragged edges, sort of like tearing a piece of paper; then it would slowly drain back off the paddle and go back to looking like a liquid. I called my boss over to see it and we both enjoyed seeing in real life something that until then we only knew from the classroom. Thanks for the fun, as usual. :-)

Not actually hovering. If it was filmed with a cut away you'd see that the speaker hits the liquid and launches it up slightly every time it makes impact. However, you can make things float using sound. In fact I think there's a desk toy that does it.
