OR-14 omnics took part in the first omnic crisis. *After* that was over, they started producing an upgraded model called the OR-15, to defend Numbani (and probably other places). Efi took a destroyed OR-15, and fixed and upgraded it. Since it wasn't a "stock" OR-15 anymore, she just stuck an "A" on the end, and thus "OR15A" was born (hint: read the model number in leet speak).

Last Bastion is one of the more emotional cinematic shorts out there. Y'all got most of the background info pretty spot on too. Bastion (the robot) was a generic unit on the robots' side of the Omnics War. That city was a human city, and Bastion's orders were to attack it (along the dozens, if not hundreds, of others like him). He somehow got decommissioned in the forest, but still in functional shape and then slept for however many years that was, until he got awakened by the bird. And you were right that the woodpecker literally triggered his PTSD of the war. I also like the bit where he's watching the caterpillar, then the bird goes to eat it and you just see his head jerk a bit, like he's startled. xD

It’s amazing how they portrayed PTSD with a robot. And showed his inherent goodness fighting and struggling with his programming and ptsd. Then all the symbolism. With the bird, not only representing free win and freedom but also his good side and reminding him to live in the present. And when that bird comes back putting him literally in the middle of the screen in the middle of the forest and the city, torn between 2 options, the conflict in his mind etc. Before finally showing him walking away from the city and picking the forest, choosing freedom and goodness. What an amazing way to humanize a robot…

I think the brilliance of The Last Bastion is that because Bastion can't speak (though he communicates through musical beeps) and he doesn't really interact with anyone other than Ganymede (that's the bird, who is with him even in-game and gets a makeover for every skin of Bastion) so you have to read the body language and you have to really look at everything around them and it makes it so deep.

For more lore there is a character in the game called Torbjorn and he was actually sent to disable Bastion (the one you see here) after finding out that a Bastion Unit has managed to survive, but upon finding him he realizes he can't kill him and instead decides to protect him.

The forest where the short took place is called "Schwarzwald" ("Black forest" in the english version). Its a forest in germany and the city he was originally supposed to attack was "Stuttgart" ( wich is based on the real german city Stuttgart)

Back Again my Friends! Not gonna lie had to double check and paste some words from a wiki to get it right. Don't judge me. The Omnic Crisis, also known as the First Omnic Crisis, was a decade-long period of war between the self-aware robots known as omnics and humanity. The Beginning The seeds for the Omnic Crisis were laid about 60 years ago by the Omnica Corporation, who constructed Omniums; massive, automated factories governed by self-improving software algorithms. They were meant to achieve economic equality. However, these factories were decommissioned when the company was shut down for fraud. Thirty years ago, several omniums across the world mysteriously reactivated and began building armies of military-grade omnics, which were deployed without warning or mercy against the nations of the world. The SST Laboratories "Bastion" Siege Automation model B73 was the standard unit produced by the Omniums. Other classes of omnic were produced as well to fight in the crisis like the OR14 "Idina" line. Initial Response Russia was the first country to be affected. They responded by producing giant human-piloted mechs called Svyatogors to combat the omnics. As the crisis spread to the rest of the world, other nations were forced to develop their own solutions. The United States created the Soldier Enhancement Program (Soldier 76, Reaper), and J08 produced Crusader Armor (Reinhardt, you'll see in the Honor & Glory cinematic) in Germany. However, the self-improving algorithms at the heart of the omniums allowed them to adapt to and counter each individual nation's measures; no country alone could effectively fight back against the omnics. The creation of Overwatch When the countries' individual self-defense programs proved to be failing, the United Nations developed a small, experimental task force called Overwatch. Over the course of the Crisis, the Overwatch team targeted and dismantled omniums, quarantined God Programs (Anubis etc.), and destroyed and disassembled nearly all Bastion units. The End of the Crisis By concentrating on the omnic command and control infrastructure, Overwatch was able to render most of the omnic forces inert and secure victory for humanity. The end of the war did not mean the destruction of every omnic. Communities of fully-sentient omnics still exist across the globe. No omnic or omnium has provided an explanation or justification for commencing war against humanity either during or after the Omnic Crisis; the motivations behind it remain a mystery.
