Non-Responsive Lexus Navigation System Fix

This video is a guide to help those with the Lexus Navigation system problem. I made this video out of frustration to not finding much on this issue online and what little I found had very little to go on, I'm hoping this helps others with a similar issue.
Disclaimer: I am not a mechanic and do not work for Lexus or Toshiba. I'm lending my un-professional guide to this issue. Please remember when working with electronics there can be a possibility of electric shock, please be careful and remove all jewelry and unplug main power source, do not touch any of the components on the circuit board, wear some sort of static strap, the static electricity can damage components. My husband and I, using this instructional video, fixed our Lexus today!! It is unbelievable how exact these directions are and how happy we were to accomplish this feat. (Have plenty of patience and take your time!) The hardest part was getting the vent out without breaking it. A tip to others who need to remove the vent - try putting duct tape on the end of two screwdrivers to protect the vent and dash while working it from side to side - it worked well for us. Also, we put the conductive material on - let it dry overnight then applied the second coat this morning. I used a 60 watt light to dry the product, covering the screen area to protect from possible damage from light exposure. Thank you so much for your incredible video! Total cost to repair - $35!! You saved us thousands!

Thanks for the video, Murdered Ink. It was a lot easier than I thought! My advise: make sure to buy a conductive pen. A regular hot soldering iron will not work - the solder will not stick and you risk melting the orange, protective layer (thus having to scrape again).

Finally have some free time to post. Kudos to your entire video. You deserve a Starbucks on me. Very detailed and complete. I couldn't thank you enough for this video which saved me thousands. Just two additions if I may, I used a ten pack of crayola markers to color mark the rear wires on disconnect. Old guys like me forget when reassembling. Be very careful when using pen solder. Mine ran over to the next contacts which you then have to wait until it drys and slowly scrape the excess away. Use very very small amounts to each contact let dry and hit it again like you said. Don't rush using the pen solder.

Thanks a million for making this video Murdered Ink, you are The Bomb! The only issue we ran into was that my IS350 has 6 clips for the faceplate, there were 2 more hidden in between the upper half and the lower half and we just couldn't get the face plate off. So we re-attached the face plate on the bottom CD unit and then unbolted it from the frame, which then allows that half to swing away from the top half about an inch, freeing those 2 hidden clips and then just take the face plate off the top half while the bottom half stays attached to the faceplate. Another way to free the 2 middle clips would be to slide a very long and thin steak knife or something between the narrow gap on the back and twist the knife to pry it off the clips. We also decided to buy a new screen at Amazon for $43, the cable looks like it will not come undone like the OEM unit. The old screen comes off by using a hair dryer to soften the glue and then use the Exacto knife around the edge. I recommend using double sided tape to put the new screen back on if you go that route, just be careful that it doesn't show through the opening by checking it first. The circuit liquid also worked for us on the old screen, but I recommend poking the Exacto knife tip under the glass at the contacts while it's still wet so you get a good connection.

Man! thank you so much for this video. Just fixed mine last night and works like a charm now. It probably took me around 2 hours total. The hardest part was removing the air vents from the dash smh. RadioShack sold the circuit writer pen which was $19.99, but they also had another brand of it which was $10 cheaper so I went with that. All in all it cost me $10 and a couple of hours to fix my screen. Again, thanks for this video.

I used this and an instructables guide to fix mine. It totally worked and was a lot easier than I thought it would be. After re-drawing the circuit, I was only getting about 400 Ohms on circuit 2/4, but it all still worked great. Excellent tip on chipping the glass to give more connectivity! Lexus dealership told me it would be $2500 to replace with a refurbed unit. This cost me

Thanks for the video! This fix worked fine. I fixed the original digitizer as it wasn't THAT hard to do. Getting a new screen would save down time when the dash is actually in pieces. I did spend an extra 15 bucks for a wearable magnifier and light. I have all the other tools etc. Saves $50 and doesn't take that long. The time is waiting for the circuit writer to dry...used a cheap ($20) space heater on low setting. Set the digitizer/lcd on a towel about 2 feet from the heater. The towel was to eliminate vibrations. Liguid solder is very sensitive while drying. Let it dry about 8 hours and readings were in the 1200 range for both. I used Silver (vs nickel) for the circuit writer itself. I don't think you need to raise the clips on the vents. Those seem to hold the vents to the vent housing. Just pry from the side CAREFULLY. I spent many years as a mechanic and I am used to working on this kind of stuff. I live in So Cal if anyone needs help. Lexus screwed up by making so much of the car dependent on functions controlled by the touch screen. Whatever you do, don't say the work "COMPASS" when using voice commands as there is NO verbal command to exit this mode. Have a nice day!

Thank you so much. I couldn't get my multimeter to read anything. But I still went ahead and did it. After install everything work except the map was gone. I tough I mess it up cuz my magnet that is on my multimeter got ahold of the navi cpu. I went back and double check online and on the back of the system and found that my blue plug to white plug had feel off during disassemble. Plug it in and what a relef Thank you again. Hey i have a 2009 is250. The navigation works... But the radio doesnt. You turn up the volume and it doesnt do anything. Already changed all the radio fuses and checked for voltage to the speaker. I didnt get any. Idk if replacing the radio would work or i probably have an opeb somewhere

Bravo, my friend. Lexus should be ashamed this hasn't been recalled for such a minor fix to such a critical part of the vehicle that can be potentially hazardous. I've purchased over a quarter million in Lexus/Toyota vehicles over 20 years. I hate to say it but it's time for a change.

I totally agree! They are not even shameful about it when I called Lexus Corporate office. I even mentioned all of the complaints and frustrations online. As expensive as it is to own a Lexus, they really should. My car isn't even old enough for this to be happening in my opinion! They even asked me did I sit something on the dash and spill it? Couldn't have done it without your video. So thank you. Only issue I had was that the radio and the clock/hazzard/airbag wires use the same connector and I accidentally swapped them. If you do this you'll notice the clock/hazzard has no function, and there's an airbag warning on the dash. It's literally the ONLY connectors that have a shared connector type, all the rest are unique or are color coded. It's ridiculous that Lexus still wants to replace the ENTIRE Nav unit ($2500-$6500 depending on who you ask) to fix a friggin' $30 digitizer.

Haha, I wouldn't have noticed either except that my clock/hazard weren't working and there was an airbag warning on the dash. The cable that attaches to the face plate and comes off the right side of the NAV is the one that shares the same connector housing.

Thanks man! I've never done any work on my car before but figured I'd give this a shot since your detailed instructions made it look manageable. Found a digitizer for $40 rather than repairing the circuit since I didn't have any of the electrical stuff anyways. Worked great and nav is up and running again! Had some issues just getting the vent out but the rest went pretty smoothly.

Timetryp The digitizer is like a thin plate that sits on top of the LCD screen and registers where you are touching the screen and translates that into some touch coordinates. I read where the digitizer is secured to the screen by an adhesive - and presumably held in place by the exterior metal frame. Thanks for the input!

Great info, I'd recommend instead of whittling the connection and using a conductive pen to repair, simply replace the digitizer... you can get one for about $30. It's a lot easier to replace the whole thing and not have to worry about the connections. Heck the conducive pen costs $20.

this is true, but if the connection at the digitizer was the issue, then replacing the screen just buys time before it fails again, that is if the manufactures of the digitizer have not changed the way it is made or materials use. I'm not saying the fix is the answer to all, but it has been almost 4 yrs and the initial screen went out about 4yrs into owning the car.

Thank for uploading the video. I did fixed my friend's Nav problem. There a couple notes that one should be careful when performing this fix. 1. Do not allow the silver solder to overflow and touch the flat surface of the screen. Doing this will shorted it out and you will get a reading of 0 Ohm. It is very important!! Only apply the silver solder to touch the side of the glass to the ribbon cable. I have to perform this few times because my silver trace overflow and touch the surface of the Nav screen. 2. My Ohm reading for pin 2-4 is 1.1 MOhm and it still works. It does not have to read 1.7 MOhm. It took me a few hours just to make sure that 1.1 MOhm will work, and it does.

Hey my pins 2-4 is reading 1057 and 1-3 is reading 506. I read your post so i thought it would work but when i plugged everything back into my car my touch screen still didn't work... It registers when i touch the screen but always only at this same spot at the bottom left. Any ideas as to why mine isn't working?

You need to make sure that the soldering material can not touch the surface of the touch screen. All the soldering need to be on the side only. I have to resolder 3-4 times to get it right. Every time my solder touch the surface, it won't work... Hope this help.

For anyone attempting this themselves, be very careful with the AC vent removal. Even with Non Marring tools you can scratch and rip your dash up pretty good. Not sure if one of the tabs being stuck is the issue but I pulled all 4 down and the ac vents are still not budging. There are leather repair kits, involving heated compounds that will most likely repair it but it still hurts to see it like that. Just a heads up. Thanks to everyone's advice on the threads and video. Hope to have this resolved soon.

@Murdered Ink: Thanks for this video, you just saved me thousands of dollars on a replacement unit! I wanted to add one comment about the resistance measurements. When I probed leads 1/3 and 2/4, I got readings of about 1200Ohms and 500Ohms, respectively. Everything I could find said leads 1/3 should measure between 1500-1700Ohms, so I was a bit nervous when I plugged the unit back into the car. But so far, it is working just fine!

+DraliensGT from some of the other screens i have fixed the initial readings where zero once i performed the fixed then reading appeared, getting no reading before the fix just indicated that there is a problem in that area and that is a good thing since this video is intended for this very purpose, hope that helps

The vent removal is mentioned as a problem for many people. Maybe you might consider doing a detailed video on its removal? Are there 2 or 4 tabs? They are supposed to be in the "down" position to remove the unit? Your video is one of the best on KZbin for this overall procedure of repairing the digitizer.

Yes, the damn vent is really challenging. You press the 4 tabs down (when up I believe they press against the top of the dashboard locking it in place) then theoretically the vent just slides straight out. But it's jammed in there tight. I'm assuming there's some nifty vent removal tool out there that you insert into the actual vent to pull it straight out VS using a screw driver to pry it out from the sides while dinging up the edges of your dashboard like I did.

just a couple of millimeters in. all you're doing is creating a channel for the liquid to seep into and re-bridge the connection. on the ribbon cable you are just removing enough to expose the copper

If you still read these comments, I have a 2005 LS430 that I love and the Nav unit has intermittently gave error msg “External unit not found”. Today screen is totally blank. Great video. I got brave enough to do this and took the approach a few others did and bought a whole new digitizer on Amazon. Video was great with helping take the unit apart. I had to break apart the old digitizer from the nav screen since it was glued on top, but cleaned it up and placed the new digitizer on top and started to re-assemble...then I tweaked the ribbon cable from the unit to the screen and cracked it!!! I didnt know if my damage totally severed a connection in the ribbon so I put everything back together and turned on my car. No dice! Now my screen will not turn on. Murder Ink clearly calls out that the ribbon cables are delicate and I just screwed it up when putting it back together. Went from a fully functional screen with no touch to black. FML. Word of warning.

Found a replacement ribbon cable for about $50 online and should be delivered in 2 weeks or so. Hoping that's all I need to get me back up and running.

Happy to report that the main power ribbon cable I purchased was delivered and I was able to replace it today. It was definitely the source of my problem because I am back up and running and the new digitizer I installed works great. Nav and touchscreen are both fully functional. For those that are possibly looking for that ribbon cable, I know it was hard to find, but once I stumbled onto AliExpress there were a bunch. Thanks for posting this, I'm so glad I found this video, my gps stopped working almost 2 yrs ago. Of course Lexus wouldn't help, in opinion this type of malfunction shouldn't happen so easily. My gps and many things started going haywire within one year of the warranty expiring. With some help I'm going to try this out. I hope I get similar results. Btw how low did the whole process take?

What takes the longest is letting circuit write pen stuff dry, some times i have to let it sit over night before getting a reading, best of luck and don't hesitate to ask a question if your stuck

2 part question. I followed everything as you did. Waiting for the circuit writer pen to dry now. Do you think it's going to be a problem that some of the liquid Ran over the other leads. I.e. Where the 2 sheets of the digitizer meets near the leads, some of the circuit right ran the edge towards the other exposed copper. I didn't think it was thin enough to run until it was too late. I tried wiping it off but it didn't completely come off. I don't think there's a lot, but I'm concerned that circuits might overlap? So, again, do you think it will be a problem? And if so, what would you suggest me trying, to get everything off to start over again?

if you have the ability to perform a continuity test with your multimeter, then perform one at the points in question. you can also use the tip of the exact knife to scrape the overlap off, one the material has dried and cured

First of all I want to thank you for this great video. I followed your direction and was able to get the reading from points 2 and 4 after applying the tracer, but I still do not have anything on 1 and 3. Strangely I get reading from 1 and 2 even though I do not see any traces between 1 and 2. Is there any cleaner that I can use to clean 1 and 3 traces off and reapply or do I have to scrap it off. Any other suggestion? Also where did you buy the liquid tape to seal the contacts? Thanks

when i have this happen i just scrap it off and chip away at the glass a little more and try again. The pens liquid can be a pain to work with sometimes. also give it a full 24hrs to dry before applying the liquid tape, which i bought at walmart in the hardware section.

Many thanks for your great video. Our screen works and we have saved $2K!. We spent alot of time making sure the air vent clips were pushed DOWN so the vent can be removed. Also, we couldn't get a reading unless we chipped the touchscreen glass and then applied the circuit pen. Best.

Very informative . My screen just frozen too because I let the car in the sun and it was too hot . Just one question please , how can you remove the liquid tape in case you want to put more circuit writer ? I am afraid it would be difficult to remove without damaging the wires ? thank you very much

You can just peel it off, it won't damage the wires, but might remove the circuit writer ink, in which case you just put more. My suggestion once you put some circuit writer ink and you get the reading on the multimeter, put some more, let it dry, then put the liquid tape. As a side note, the circuit writer ink takes a long time to dry, sometimes I had to leave it over night before I would get any reading on the multimeter. hope that helps and good luck.

If you removed the plate covet for the overindulge gear shift. You press the button and you can take it out of park without the key or ignition on. It’s located on the driver side left hand side of the park Position. Small flathead screwdriver and pry up should see a white or black sometimes green button press it and place shift in desired location

So I am confused a bit on testing the resistance, do I check the resistance where the ribbon meets the board to see if there is a reading there first or where the ribbon meets the screen? If I am checking the resistance near were the ribbon meets the screen do I just go and test it without etching the glass first?

check it at the ribbon cable when you disconnect it from the board. if you don't get a reading there then that continue on with the fix

just replace that panel, in the vid you can see that it comes off as a whole unit with one connector. therefore it can be replaced. also if you remove it you could see if there is any visible damage maybe that could easily be fixed without needing replacement

Horacio Rodriguez-Lopez try to expose more of the copper from further back you'll just have a longer trace of circuit writer pen on that connection

hey so I'm stuck trying to pry off the face. I've removed the 8 screws and there seems to be a pinch point somewhere between the two segments where the cd drive and the rest of the navigation is at. what am I missing?

I've experience the same, there are some screw holding a bracket that holds the top section to the bottom section, loosen those and that should give you enough wiggle room to remove the face, that face is held on by some tabs in the center. hope this helps

take your time, the ribbon cable is thin but not super fragile, just handle with care and your fine, once again don't rush any part of it, let the material dry for a full 24hrs, and if any questions or doubts just leave a comment i try and reply quick, best of luck

I've had this exact issue for a bit over a year and never bothered to have it replaced since it cost an arm and a leg at the dealer and was pretty fearful of having it fixed by someone else. I was wondering are you able to separate the digitizer from the LCD or are they fused together? I've found a reasonably priced digitizer replacement and thought of just replacing the whole thing. Furthermore, after the repair does anything rattle more than it usually does? Thanks in advance!

it seems like you can just change the digitizer but i have not tried, and no there is no added rattle than what there already was, i didn't have any and still don't have any rattles. do you have a link to that digitizer? if so please post in comment thanks!

The price seems reasonable although you could get it for around $10 cheaper if you order it directly from china, however i opted for the one that was already in the US for faster delivery. I'm hoping I could just remove my old digitizer and pop this one in. I rewatched your video as well during the part where you were working on it but couldn't see if it was glued to the LCD panel or what is was held in place by. If theres anything you recall let with regards to that let me know. Thanks again for the ever so helpful vid!
