Non-Stop! Small mouth & Striped bass fishing Congaree River Columbia SC.

In the early summer, Striped Bass run up the Santee Cooper lakes and all the way up the Congaree river to Columbia, SC. This is the second year Greg and I ventured up from Charleston to experience fishing for large striped bass in the flowing rapids. While the scenery is urban, the fishing is unexpectedly phenomenal!
In our half day on the water we caught, small mouthed bass, striped bass, channel catfish, and bowfin!

I went to Carolina about 12 years ago, and we used to fish that river all the time! It’s a great spot, the city has gotten rid of some of the places where you could bank fish

Nice catches! Gone have to try that weighted hook (and the Finesse BulletZ) when smallmouth fishing up here in the French Broad near Asheville where I live. Just like inshore, gotta fish around structure (wood, rocks) and it's snaggy as hell. Coming to the coast near Kiawah for two weeks starting Saturday...can't wait to smell some saltmarsh and get after the reds! Tight lines!

With all the submerged structure the belly weighted hook was great. It also balances well enough that the lure slowly sinks level. I love the finesse bulletz, paired with the finesse crawz, those are near the perfect smb rig. Should be a great time to visit Kiawah! Enjoy your trip!

Do you happen to know what the gage height of the water was on that day? I'm ineterested in doing a similar trip to the one you made but don't want to make the drive only to find out the river is too low or too high, etc. It looks like that stretch of river can get pretty low at times from what I can see on google maps. Man I love to fish striped bass at Lake Norman in Charlotte. What a beautiful striped bass caught! Question - From Congaree (at/near convergence) up to Broad - are there areas where people can fish from the bank? Like actual fishing access areas - kayak launches?

Definitely! Check out Riverwalk Park in Columbia. There is a pathway along the river a good way and several people fish from there.

Riverwalk park in Columbia. However it was a pain in the but and I’d recommend using a really launch. There is one further up the saluda.

Were you using any procure? And also what was the weight on the belly weight hook??

Wasn’t using procure although might of had residual from previous outings. I’ve been using the same 3.3” plastic bad shad Mulletron for about 3 trips and dozens of fish including reds. The ZWG hook is 1/8 oz and pairs perfectly with the 3.3” Mulletron.

We aren’t from there so tried riverwalk park near the confluence. Not an easy place to launch and then there are immediate rapids. We were stubborn and I wouldn’t recommend that spot as a launch.

I’ve never seen any that far up the river but apparently there are a couple around. There are tons further down towards the Lowcountry and the river dumps into swampy santee river lakes
