Hey Kyle, I was excited to see this video of yours because I've recently developed on allergy to oil paint (it was really bothering my lungs to the point I had to stop) and I have been exploring painting with acrylics which has been fun and has it's advantages but as I researched and tried different things I'm quite sure it's the linseed oil I'm allergic to. I have some of these paints coming tomorrow and I can't wait to see if that fixes the issue for me - it almost certainly has to! I've enjoyed your channel and I'm a fellow artist KZbinr.

Love your channel. So much great information in your videos and such calmness. Thank you for this video on non-toxic oil options. I"m going to use this as my shopping list :) I searched to see if you had a video you on varnishing your finished paintings...how long you wait to do so....what products and techniques you use, but didn't see one. Perhaps you'd consider creating one in the future? Meanwhile, I'll keep going through all your videos. Even if there isn't mention of varnishing in one, each one I've seen is a gem!

Thank you for this. I have a bird, and birds are exceptionally sensitive to any kind of fumes. Even cooking with non-stick cookware or using hairspray in the house can kill them. That's why canaries were taken into mines as an early warning system for bad air. I am trying to research whether oil is a medium I can use in my house at all, and I'm really hoping that I can some day. (In my studio away from the pets, of course.)

Great video! Am a brand new artist and was wanting to do oil painting but as I started to research and consider solvents and ventilation I was literally seconds away from saying “screw it I’ll use acrylics” lol. But one final google search led me to this video :)

Hi Kyle! Great video, I'm looking to change my set up for painting to non-toxic as well. Wondering how long your paintings take to dry using the walnut oil as your medium?

Hi Katrina! My paintings take about 2 weeks to be dry to the touch. They continue to cure after this point, but at this stage you can put on gamvar and send to a buyer.

I find that natural terpenes (from citrus peel) work as well as OMS for deep cleaning brushes, and their trace presence in my brush when I go back inside to paint, worries me far less.

Have you ever used poppyseed oil? I hear it doesn't yellow over time. I've also heard that walnut oil isn't archival. Have you tried Weber Turpenoid Natural? It's still a solvent, but I hear good things about it. I also had an idea of making a fume hood type apparatus that sucks air directly above the painting and maybe a second for the brush station. All the exhaust can be routed outside. It would also cycle out the air in the room too.

Wonderful video! I really appreciate the info! When using these exact colors and oil, do you still need a fan and great ventilation when painting? Or is it perfectly safe? Thanks!!!

Thanks Jennifer! I’m not really sure about ventilation with this setup, but I don’t personally use ventilation. I think some people have issues with diffused oils, so it never hurts to have a window cracked!

Super interesting ! Thank you for sharing, can you paint in multiple sessions using this setup or do you have to paint alla prima ? Thank you for your answer
@KyleHeathArt
@KyleHeathArt 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can paint this way over multiple days, but the quality of the paint changes. It’s going to get tackier each day, and some paints will dry up entirely overnight! But in general, the canvas will be wet for multiple days, and progressively getting tackier.

Hi kyle ! Is it possible to use linseed based oil with a Walnut oil medium? I'm very new to oil painting. Thank you !
@s.nihilista4853
@s.nihilista4853 Жыл бұрын
Yes you can. There is no harm in mixing walnut oil with linseed oil based paints. There is also no harm in mixing any kind of oil paint. A lot of lighter colors or white are mixed with walnut or safflower oil because they don’t yellow like linseed oil do.

Do you just mix the walnut oil into your paints to get them to flow instead of thinner?

I think since walnut oil oxidizes, it may be better only to use it for a limited time. Not sure how quickly it oxidizes, but I know heat and sunlight co tribute.

Do you worry about your rags randomly combusting having dabs on walnut oil soaked in them? I am not sure how careful I am supposed to be...

Walnut oil is not considered flammable. Linseed oil by comparison is though! So know what your paints are made of.
