How I wish I could meet you and sit and share a cup of coffee and listen to more of your story! Thank you. We have a 18 yr old non verbal autistic son who is currently in a residential home and somehow we don’t understand why the school and/or home won’t work more diligently with him to use his iPad to communicate. It’s like they gave up because when he uses it he gets so frustrated that they say it triggers behaviors. I just can’t believe that it has to end that way!! Got diagnosed last year in adulthood and I’m verbal but I can certainly see some similarities though I hide mine. My family used to wonder why I’d go off or do the things I do and he puts it very well, we see the things others’s don’t. I used to stare at my hands for ages and look at all the lines in my hands. I notice patterns among other things. I did play but in some restricted way. Though I have no special skills and I’m just average intelligence. I tried to hide so many symptoms but my Mum would seek help and then I would because I was just struggling to cope. I moved in and out of my parents’ house. Finally a key worker for something else found out my family wanted an assessment (I didn’t think I had it and went in to prove them wrong) and she pushed for a diagnoses. She must have noticed something that so many missed. Well apparently I have autism. I’m in supported housing for now (my own flat) and I hope to try get a more normal life. But damn I wish this was all picked up much earlier. Thanks for sharing your story anyway. It’s interesting to see the similarities and differences along the spectrum from verbal and non-verbal. Fyi: I was and am hyperactive too (a nightmare for my Mum). She had a difficult pregnancy. I had issues with my ears and missed many milestones aside from running and walking. Had to have speech therapy very early on. Had trouble speaking till I was five then they couldn’t shut me up. HF ASD runs in the family. I’m also dyslexic. I really like people and try to be social but I struggle and always have. I also personally (please don’t take offense) dislike the term neurotypical. Even non autistics are diverse and in the end we’re all human. We need to learn to accept our differences, enjoy them and see our similarities, need to respect each other and try to get along although it can be hard. Again thanks for sharing. I watch these to learn about my own condition and watch others and see how they live, cope and learn. Edit: Our technology has come a long way and it’s awesome to find non-verbals and others can now communicate. He’s a lovely lad. Great video! Thanks for sharing your lives Gavin and his Mum!

Out of curiosity, did you end up getting the iPad? Did it work?

It happened with my son. He lost speech when he was 2 and spaced out. He was diagnosed when he was 3.5 years. He kept on deteriorating and by age 7 he was severe. We kept on evaluating clinically until we discovered that he has mutation that causes a depletion of folate in his brain and inflames it (causing brain damage). We started folinic acid and it stops the progression of the damage. Now he is way better and acquiring so many skills. His brain still suffered some damage but we manage to stop it.

It is amazing, he is a prisoner inside his own mind. He is so intelligent but he can not communicate properly. He must be so frustrated that he knows so much but he cannot verbalise his thoughts and opinions to the outside world.

I work with autistic adults. Some at the same point on the spectrum as Gavin and all along at each end of the spectrum. It is a baffling, surprising, challenging, upsetting, amusing, unsettling, heartwarming, smile-making and at times worrying trait of some humans. It can be a blessing and a curse to both be autistic and to work with autistic people. While it would put me out of a job, I dream of a day when these people are no longer trapped. It's difficult to be politcally correct and not offend people. But at times I so wish these individuals could experience (won't say enjoy - because who's to say they don't already enjoy their time on earth) how it is to be neurotypical. While autistic people with limited capabilities may seem mute and invalid to the outside world, I see those who I support jump up to news stories on TV or music, or specific people. These occurances cannot all be random. At times, sadly it can superficially seem that some autistic individuals are an 'alive human body' like a shell with a soul. But then sparks of imagination and pure intelligence and sense of humour, along with affection and understanding shine through piercingly. These individuals should be cherished, cared for and, for Christ's sake, EVERY avenue of neuro-science should be rooted out to see if we can, at the very least help them live their lives and communicate their needs.

Oh believe me, autistic people wish you could experience what it was to be autistic...but I don't think the neurotypical mind would be able to handle it. Why would they need to experience what it is to be neurotypical? Do you mean you would like them to be able to communicate more easily? Cos those two things don't have to go together. Autism isn't just not being able to communicate, we have a radically a different culture, way of processing and set of ethics. Yes, we have different ethics. Across the board. I'm Australian and in our history white people wanted to emancipate indigenous people from what they perceived as a terrible life and blind to the richness kg their culture. You can imagine how that went. Making people more like you isn't the answer to helping them be happy. Empowering them is. Neurotypical people don't have it together, you just don't see your own faults because you all back each other up and reinforce each other. The neurotypical world is frighteningly unhealthy looking at it from the outside.

I am so glad that Gavin, even though he is non-verbal and has autism understands what we all go through! Though with the real! I am 25 years old, and I have Asperger syndrome or what they would now call autism spectrum disorder, which is a whole load of crap if you ask me to ask me. But he's right, even though I am very verbal and vocal. A lot of the time, I do not feel heard, and it hurts. And has an ipad to communicate what he wants and what he wants , and he wants other people to know and see and believe about autism.. He explains autism in a nutshell. Even though he is completely unverbal, it's completely non-verbal. He is right; too many people sit in silence islands regardless of whether they are verbal or not. Sometimes it's hard for me to get my feelings out as a 25 year old Who is really really verbal sometimes I can tell you in the midst of me crying, and then there are Times where I cannot tell you why I'm crying or I know I'm crying but I can't tell you maybe it's a sensory problem maybe I'm emotionally depleted I don't know in those moments it could be because I have a seizure I don't know. Like on Tuesday, I had what I would call zone out caesars was basically look like I'm intentionally not paying attention to you when you call my name and that is not it at all. I don't always respond because it looks like I'm staring off to space people sometimes call them daydream seizures sometimes Staring spells whatever you want to call it all it but it still makes it hard to communicate. On Tuesday I had to leave work because I had 5 of them! Thank God I did not have the big grandmal seizures that everybody assumes what epilepsy is. It's not the ONLY that that is the only epilepsy there is. And that's not true! And I can do a video later on how to do it or explain it

I have what my psychiatrist describes as “some Asperger’s traits”. I know exactly what you mean about being very verbal but feeling unheard. What I don’t really know is whether I’m actually not _being_ heard, or if it’s just me not picking up on the _responses._ (I know that I suck at picking up signals from others. For example, I’ve had friends tell me “didn’t you notice that person flirting with you?” and I’m like, “I had no idea”.)

i saw a comment on how working with non verbal people is so bitter sweet and it is so true. i worked with a boy who has just recently got a group home. he is only one year older than me i met him at 18 he was 19 i am now 19 he has since turned 20. as if it wasn’t already bittersweet enough, i was working with someone my age who could not speak. who wasn’t “normal” but i knew in that little head of his was just like me. a completely different life than me. i wish more than anything to hear his voice but most importantly his thoughts. he has had a hard life and has gone into institutions. he’s had outbursts and overall difficult life for not only him but his family. and when you have children like that it is so hard you love them and want the best for them but they are just so different and i give sm credit to his parents for raising him. non verbalism in children can be difficult through out the years raising them. i met him when he had just “calmed down” so i was not there for the hard parts. but i was there for the best. and even seeing him get a home which was a struggle for many years bc of his severity and also many other complications. but jonah (his name) has shown me how sweet he is. he has truly changed my heart and i already had a big heart to begin with. he is empathetic and caring and goofy. i have cried to him several times and every time i have he has never failed to comfort me. even if it wasn’t always the most comforting, sometimes he also could be. he has such a kind heart. i wish most to hear his sense of humor. he knows very few signs in sign language and did not grow up learning how to type or spell. i hope one day he can learn. idk how easy it is for them to after a certain age and you have to have someone to care a lot to put the patience in teaching them. i want to hear him his thoughts his ideas his points of views his memories things he wants to do. i want to hear when he’s sad so i can help him and he isn’t suffering in silence. and i am so sad right now bc idk how much he is actually interested or willing to try in learning how to communicate. everyone is different i’ve never tried with him and i don’t think many have to that extent. he also has ADHD on top of autism. i don’t know i think he just prefers how he communicates now, which can be very vague when it comes to things like emotionally. other than asking for certain things like food or gestures. he is a wonderful boy and i hope heaven is real so i can meet him again differently. he is the first person i am asking to see when i pass. i love him. thank you for putting this out there to the world.

I have a nonverbal daughter who is 10 and I am trying to find the best way to teach her to communicate. Could I email you maybe? I find Gavin's communication amazing. Thanks for sharing this with us. This shows that we shoulddn't be quick to judge others based on their appearance or their disabilities. Gavin is a really smart young man and that I believe that he can and will go further in life with the right support and people around him. It's great to hear about what he thinks and wants to express how he feels. There's a lot of children, teens, and adults are just like Gavin and my only hope is still to see each one of them to be accepted for who they are and not just under the label. Great to see that his mum is so loving and devoting to her son. Let's hope that others will learn to communicate with people like Gavin and yes as she said that we need to be patient with them. :) I wish him all the best for what's to come in his life. Does he have a page on Facebook or some other media that we can follow and support him? If so, what is it?
