Nonprofit looks to keep West Dallas residents from being priced out of homes

The growth and gentrification of West Dallas has led to quickly escalating property taxes. Now, a nonprofit is offering longtime residents an opportunity to get some help.

This is a great idea especially with wages not increasing. If wages would increase to be able to be sustainable programs like this wouldn't have to be made. This type of program should be everywhere. Bravo Dallas.

Alot of those neighborhoods are 100 years old around Dallas and the homes are not well taken care of .

West Dallas always been the hood. I’m not even trying to be funny or rude either. That area was never meant to be upscale. It was built to be a slum. Many parts of that area didn’t even get paved streets until the 70s. Also, up-keeping an 100 year old home isn’t easy. Especially, if it’s not modernized.

Commenters don't understand that the increased value is only realized when they sell. Even then it won't be enough to buy another home in Dallas. In the mean time, they are stuck paying taxes on that increase evaluation. Some people actually look upon their house as a home, not a damn investment

Agreed. Higher property values just mean more taxes. Most people aren’t selling, so why would anyone care if property values go down? Less taxes.

Welcome to real life. That's exactly how the rest of us live, paying taxes on houses we need to live in. They are no exception to reality.

You know these owners have accumulated a lot of equity for themselves and their families. Even if they have to sell, they will still have lots of money? Perhaps spending the money on the less fortunate would be better?
