I have been watching your videos for quite some time. I speak as a Greek, a passenger of almost 25 years, a videographer of 15 years and a trainee train driver. You had a good journey and i am so glad about it. Usually the norm is delays, no signalling, mediocre services on board, constant railworks that never end. Mismanagement, lack of staff and funding have caused problems to our network over the years. However you had everything going well on this particular day and i would like to thank you for visiting. It's nice to see that Greece has managed to bring its railways up to more modern standards. I spent 1 1/2 years in Thessaloniki in the 80's riding the Thessaloniki-Athens regularly. Trains were old, engines (often old ailing Romanian types), rarely departed on time and were frequently hours behind schedule. On the positive side, they had great restaurant cars (some Orient Express vintage) with delicious meals. I suppose also the souvlaki and rice pudding vendors at the southern stations are long gone - they were quite a treat. In all, I'd love to relive the trip sometime in the latest rolling stock.

Railways in Greece kinda suck, I took a 20euro trip from Barcelona to Valencia with a regular train and the train itself was high class. The seats were huge, super clean, actually modern design and really fast. I mean the first class in our trains looks like shit and they are super expensive. I would never pay for first class train seats in Greece they offer nothing. The stations are from the war.

Well. At the time you filmed this video this service (IC 54 if I am right) it was a core service, but not Premier. At that time the premier service was ICE 50/51 with only 2 stops and a transit time of 4 hours, but departed early in the morning. It used the same but cleaned from graffiti rolling stock. Now ICE 50/51 (early mornig) and ICE 60/61 (evening) have been taken over by the ETR's (the flagship train) as the premier service of Trainose. So this is actually the second most used (and prestigious) train service in Greece, because it serves small towns and villages. Inoi for example is served because it is the start of a branch line to Chalkida, a major town/city in Greece, which is nearby. The same goes for Platy, as it's a junction station for lines to inner parts of Macedonia. As for the speed no trains in Greece are allowed to run faster than 140-160 km/h because of signalling works being done and running at a reduced capacity. Even the ETR's at this moment run at this configuration. Now in the ETR services there are complementary snack and drinks in First Class. And lastly, this empty room you found is a children playground that they turned into a "COVID" room and probably forgot to turn it back into a playground, hehe.

aaaaaah yes! i remember taking this train as a teen, travelling from thessaloniki to athens for rock concerts without parents knowing, back then they would use an even older train for the overnight trip that was ofcourse, cheaper!! Fun fact: Certain days every year (like a recruit season) this train ride is used by THOUSANDS of young new army recruits who leave their homes very early in the morning to go and serve their 12 month army training on the other side of greece. It's a really bizzare atmosphere because none of them knows what to expect and there is this almost cinematic "tension" in the air, if a foreigner saw this they would think greece is going to war and they were caught in the middle of it lol. Myself too, took this train before the crack of dawn to go serve in the military down south were i was summoned.

Very nice video! Since previous September i was traveling everyday with the train from your previous video in Greece, to go to my university in Corinth and i wanted to say that is indeed a regional train that is packed full some times of the week, mostly on the return trip so you wouldn't expect much luxuries for a train that is used for people to go to work or university. About the ETR400, we started seeing them operating some months ago into 2022. And the official announcement of the beginning of their journeys also came some months ago. Thank you for visiting and posting this loverly video about my country. When you are in Greece, it feels like God turned all lights on during the day time and you can see so much sunshine. As far as the popularity of trains...meh. The Greeks since the 1980s loved the car and didn't favour much the train. People generally preferred to drive, fly or take a bus from Athens to Thessaloniki, as opposed to take the train. TrainOSE was doing more business by transporting cargo than transporting people.

I use the suburban 5 days per week for a few years now and the train would come late most of the time during the evening hours (from 3 to 8m late) and there were times at the last 2 to 3 train's departure to be late from 10 to 40m (march and april 2022). I was still using it because the bus (KTEL) couldnt serve me, the suburban train passes 1 time per hour and my trip is estimated as 57m ride however when there is a train departure to thessaloniki my train stops at Ayii Anaryiri for 10m without any warning, also the company has no empathy for their customers when the train is late and the stuff 99% of the time blaims random factors. The monthly "card" is a piece of paper where whithin the first weeks the "card" could fade and wont be accepted also is illegal to have it scanned as you need to show it up every time (without checking oc if its the real owner or a random) the only positive is that in the suburban train you can find bactericidal gel onboard when none of the metro lines has any

1990s, Olympia to Patra. 2006, Patra to Olympia and back. Both times on narrow guage track, slow, bumpy. 1987, overnight train Athens to Thessaloniki. Very hot, no AC, air flowed in through the open window, unfortunately, so did smoke from the diesel engine. It made many stops, which made it hot inside. I have no idea how the others slept in the couchette I was in. Narrow guage too, I think. They've closed almost all narrow guage tracks, which means most of the Peloponnese lost it's train service, which probably isn't a loss. Besides the new standard guage tracks from Athens to Thessaloniki with their "higher" speed electric trains, Trainose is completing a line from Athens to Patra, with many new tunnels to lessen many of the curves that the old narrow guage tracks had. They've got as far as Kiato. Ongoing work is underway, including going underground as the tracks near Patra and Athens. Too bad you couldn't get on board the newer ETR 470.

Hello! I'm a greek trainlover- trainspotter with relatives that worked in greek railways and i have to tell you that this video is very good! You filmed this trip very well! Can i say something about train station of Athens? Its name is Σιδηροδρομικός σταθμός "Λαρίσης" ("Larisis" Railway Station). If you say Σιδηροδρομικός Σταθμός "Λάρισα" ("Larisa" Railway Station) you mean the railway station of Larisa city, thas is the middle station of ETR 470 now. Tbh, Athens Railway Station named "Larisis" and Larisas Railway Station named "Larisa". In this video you write "Larisa" in Athens, but this is no a problem because whene people see this they understand that this is railway station of Athens "Larisis". This is a little bit comfusing but there is a story behind this. People in Athens named this station "Larisis" because, when this station (in Athens) was built, the last station of this railroad was in Larisa. So they named Athens Railway Station "Larisis". I just wanted to notice this. I'm glad hearing that you liked this train trip!!!

@stefanokasuga43842 жыл бұрын
@@NonstopEurotrip Because they're not maintained well anymore, so of course the shock absorbers no longer make their duty and they "transferring" the vibrations to the people, ovalized wheels of course make noise but those trains in the past was way more comfy. The destiny of the 485's class isn't defined yet (in fact it's actually now in the old brand "Frecciabianca"). The 470's is now totally restructured so actually they're like new even if they're 30 years old.

I enjoyed the video and will definitely use this service on my next trip to Greece. First class all the way!. I have done Athens-Thessaloniki via plane and bus. Would be good to know how trip time compares accounting for aircraft check-in and waiting delays. Also what speed did the train do, was it the maximum of 200km/h?

$ 50 for a First Class ticket is very reasonable for a 3-4 hour train trip. I'd definitely go First Class if there were seats available. Are face masks still required in 2nd class seating? It seemed everyone there had one on-which is fine with me, I'm at an at-risk age for COVID.

You can try the Athens suburban railway (similar to Central Europe’s S-Bahn) which has several lines in Athens, including one to the airport, but also connects Athens to other major cities nearby such as Corinth or Chalkida in about 1 hour. I think it’s worth it, the trains make a lot of stops so you explore the Athenian suburbs
