Travelled recently with these in 2nd class on the nearly 7h journey from Bologna to Munich. While the seats were rather hard, the padding was enough and the recline also decent enough to make the journey quite comfortable. What I liked the most was the high level of privacy of the seats and the large tables. The ambience was rather nice too, with nice warm colours throughout. I have not been on the older Railjets, but I honestly don't mind these at all. Gendered toilets are a rather weird choice and I wished the headrest and seat was not too hard, but bearable enough even for a longer journey.

We're in a transition towards level boarding currently. This is an imperfect solution having so many steps internally but necessary with the Siemens design approach, retaining conventional bogies with high floor sections over them at the vehicle ends and providing a low floor 'well' section in the middle containing the external doors. By contrast, the new ICE-L design in Germany will have a fully level floor internally at the same height as German platforms (majority 760mm). The trains are from Talgo and their unique running gear design allows the intercar passageway to pass between the tops of the wheels and remain completely level throughout the length of the train. The ride quality of Talgos with fewer wheels tends to be poor relative to a traditional bogie arrangement however. While the main driver for level boarding is disabled accessibility, other operational benefits are easier, faster, more confident boarding for all and fewer minor trip and fall incidents that can cause delay.
@NonstopEurotrip5 ай бұрын
Most people, especially those with prams or reduced mobility agree with me, unfortunately
@theexcaliburone59335 ай бұрын
Of course the real solution is high platforms but for some reason only Asia sees that
@european63805 ай бұрын
This still wouldn't work for most of Europe, especially not Austria and Italy, which use 550mm platforms.
@domin7275 ай бұрын
I can understand the critic in all but one point. The steps are just a necessary tradeoff. Yes you could pretend the old railjet was technically accessible via lifts but this "solution" is less than a good one for people requiring it. Someone always has to operate it and it takes time and personnel to do so and the lifts were even often broken. The goal is that people with disabilities can use public transport without help and the old mesures did not provide this. If the lift could be used by the person autonomously this would be at least a slightly different case. This way however its better for the train to be low floor and that means either steps like here or ramps like Stadler uses. The rest of the critic I find verry understandable. Businessclass is useless now and compartment I did never really find usefull in general. Shrinking the dining car to next to nothing is definitely a big step back as well although I understand why they did it, ÖBB is literally being overrun by passengers as of late, because the government introduced new cheap season tickets, so they are under a lot of pressure to squeeze as much seeting into the allready ordered trainsets as they can. I still think the new railjet, although modern, feels like a downgrade to safe money and ressources.

@Fan652w5 ай бұрын
@@jgcondron The standard height in Germany is quite high, 76 cms. The modern stations in both Austria and Switzerland are 55 cms. One of the reasons for the success of the Swiss train manufacturer Stadler is that it builds trains with wide doors allowing fast level boarding from 55 cm platforms. Austrian Railways (OBB) has just placed a large order for Stadler double-deck trains, desperately needed because of the increase in traffic caused by the 1095 Euros a year Klima ticket. The lower deck of individual carriages is fully accessible.
@marktownend80655 ай бұрын
Fully level boarding benefits all travellers and the operator with quicker boarding and fewer trip and fall incidents that can cause delays. Just wheel luggage, baby buggies, cycles straight on and off. Less heavy lifting of luggage and people struggling with steps.
@Fan652w5 ай бұрын
Thank you for a very informative video. I love the old Railjet trains. The only problem with them is the steep steps at all DOORS. On these new trains MOST of the doors are level boarding, but there is now only one door per carrriage. So stop dwell times (now a big problem in Austria because of the huge increase in long-distance passengers caused by 1095 Euros-a-year Klima Ticket) are going to be very long. The paper rubbish bags idea seems to have been (half) borrowed from Scandinavia. However, in Scandinavia, each seat bay usually has a large supply of bags. The passengers put their rubbish in a bag and then LEAVE THE BAGS IN THE BINS BY THE DOORWAYS.
@NonstopEurotrip5 ай бұрын
Fair comments, but the old one is still better 😉
@drdewott91545 ай бұрын
Yeah as a Scandinavian I also prefer this solution. Having a tiny dirty trash bin next to you the whole ride, which likely smells of filth and rot the whole time is not very attractive, not to mention very unsanitary. Though the bags aren't my cup of tea either and DSB have now discontinued the plastic bags too. Even when they were in place, I still usually got out of my seat and walked to the nearest set of trash bins at the doors for throwing out anything like a doggy bag of food.

I took this train from Munich to Verona a couple of weeks ago and was actually very impressed with it. So I would somewhat disagree that it's not great, because I think it really is. Certainly one of the best train services I've been onto, and I've been to most of the best train services in Europe and Asia. One thing that I was especially impressed with on this train was the food and reasonable prices, for a train at least. While I do agree with issues like steps in the interior of the train and gendered toilets (that one IS weird, I agree), those aren't really a big deal. The reality is that hardly any trains in Europe offer real step-free accessibility. From what I know, more or less the only country in the world that has that in all stations on its new HSR system, thanks to standardized ~1.1m high platforms. Also, perhaps Japan and Taiwan? Therefore pointing out steps inside the train as a limiting factor for accessibility in this, or any other European train, in my view, isn't completely fair in that regard. One thing that I really agree with and what really surprised me in a negative way was the rather poor seat ergonomics in 1st class. Seats are HUGE, well padded, legroom is massive, materials are very high quality and everything would be great, except the fact that those seats aren't designed with ergonomics in mind and after a longer journey my back started hurting a little bit, which was really something I did not expect! I really wonder what were the designers of those seats thinking? Did they just believe that ergonomics don't matter? As for Business class, I was also surprised, because I actually wanted to book it and couldn't find the Single seat in the seat map. Took me some time to realise that they were not available on the new trains. Still, all in all, I think this is a great train and it is "that good" since it is, after all, one of the best trains in Europe, only coming second or third after the likes of Frecciarossa Executive or Italo Salotto class which are rather extreme and perhaps even unnecessarily luxurious as far as train classes in Europe go.

Well worth the extra 15 euro. I totally agree with your points (especially about the business class). However the comparison shouldn't be between the old and the new Railjet, but between the old EC trains and this new Railjet. After all it is replacing those trains and not the Railjets. In that case some points are still true, but the trains have Wifi now and finally some food (again) which was a big pain in the last years on the EC lines. Considering that the old 1st class only consisted of compartment coaches (however with 4 compartments of the ex businness class) it is a slight improvement that there's more choice for comfort oriented travellers. In fact the old EC trains were booked out completely in summer and I guess with the supplement for Business there will be more spontanously reserveable seats available for 1st class ticket holders. With the Business class: I hope the same will happen as with the Business class on ÖBB-IC/EC-trains.... it died... and became a normal first class. Maybe it's their plan and they are just trying out if people are okay to pay extra to sit in a compartment.

I personally have not taken this train yet, so I can't say much but I think the low floor entrances without stairs are extremely important for better accessibility and passenger flow. Boarding is just so much faster on low floor trains. Also keep in mind that these trains were originally designed for the slower Wien-Salzburg RJ which will run with KISS 200 units from 2026 instead. The reason they are now used on the Brenner route is the lack of other suitable rolling stock (Italy's regulations about fire safety will become stricter soon, although unnecessarily so) and that single deck trains would not be able to cope with the sheer amout of passengers on Wien-Salzburg. This is (I assume) also the reason for the weird business class since the double deck RJ will feature no business class at all.

I agree with the problems with the layout. Personally I'd have only done 2 or at most 3 low-floor cars, so there would be less stairs throughout the train. Especially putting the dining car in a low floor section is completely pointless, as it's not reachable from the rest of the train without climbing stairs anyways. Also putting the bicycle/ski space upstairs (and around a tight corner from the entrance) is just weird (here I would have designed a proper luggage compartment in place of the accessible toilet, basically using the same wall parts). I also expect that the lack of waste bins will backfire, especially as these trainsets are intended for long distance routes and the staff is most certainly not going to remove full waste bags during the journey and/or stock up at the final destination (if they even have stock there, which I also highly doubt). So passengers will probably put them on the floor where some will inevitably spill their contents at the first tight curve. Granted the tiny "waste drawers" in the old generation Railjets are becoming increasingly gross (because they are quite cumbersome and labor-intensive to clean), but adding proper, easily accessible (and therefore easily maintainable) bins at least every couple of rows (eg. between the seatbacks of two 4-seat bays and/or integrated in the luggage racks) would have solved that elegantly.

I have travelled business class in the old Railjet and found it extremely underwhelming - I even gave up on it, and reseated myself into the first class. I find the first class on the Railjet not nearly so comfortable as in an ICE. The seats are hard and boxy (not the case on an ICE) and the whole gives the impression of having been designed primarily for ease of cleaning. I dislike the plastic seat covering (the second class moquette is pleasanter) and the predominance of hard plastic surfaces. Compared with the excellent TGV first class (that's how to do it), the Railjet gives the impression of our old German "Silberlinge", the so-called "n-Wagen" or "Holzklasse" of the 1960's.

@@NonstopEurotrip It was the EC to Venice, which I stayed in until Innsbruck. The stock was the pre-Railjet Austrian IC-stock. I was in a 1st Class compartment which was very quiet, had softly sprung leather upholstery, good airconditioning and lots of space (four seats in the compartment). I can't tell you how much better this feels than a Railjet. My onward journey from Innsbruck took me by Railjet Mk. 1 to Buchs SG: There I lost my connection because the Railjet (RJX 162) was 25 minutes down. The 1st Class non-compartment carriage was very full, pretty uncomfortable in a Ryanair sort of way, and cramped. I ordered a meal to my seat, which was very good and recommendable (Faschierte Laibchen with a glass of Zweigelt). Conclusion: ÖBB, give us the IC carriages back!

it does seem odd that if accessibility was the end goal....why the stairs ???? and the seats look kinda thin and firm...otherwise it seems on the surface... minor quibbles...and i question your assessment about the paper trash bags being environmentally unfriendly ....as the bins often are lined with plastic bags...
@NonstopEurotrip5 ай бұрын
The old bins weren't lined at all and why didn't they just make thing better?
@heikozysk2335 ай бұрын
@@NonstopEurotrip I find bags the cleaner and possible also cheaper option as no cleaning of hundreds of bins is required day after day. I assume that the environmental impact of paper bags is small compared to manufacturing bins and for using detergents etc. The Nordics have been using bags instead of bins for ages.

Fun Fact: this was planned to be marketed as an InterCity initially. With 200 km/h maximum. Maybe that would have made more sense considering them not committing to a real business class here.

The new Railjet is also capable of 230 km/h. About the wifi, it can be pretty good. But doing a speedtest while crossing the border is kinda rigged. As soon as all ECs are replaced with RJ2s on the Munich - Innsbruck (-Italy) routes, RJ2s are planned to be used on the Südbahn routes (Wien - Graz, Wien - Villach)

VERY good improvements! I find the complaints about the new business class silly; every time I traveled in this class I was the ONLY person in the compartment (Vienna airport - Linz). All of a sudden, everyone is so annoyed by the changes? How odd? I would think that the improvements to the most popular classes (Economy & First), more than make up for the downgraded Business seats! I LOVE the new Railjet design! VERY comfortable! One Love

I travelled a few times in business class on the "old" RJ-sets. This was really a special experience. But the "new" BC is just a joke. I am not even sure the new 1st class is worth the price (ok, it is likely to be less crowded, but if 2 persons are travelling together (and reserve seats in advance), 2nd class will do. Biggest disappointment is the further dowinsizing of the "buffet-compartment" (you could not call this a dining car even on the old RJ). - On a full train "service to the table" never works, because the 2 members of staff cannot manage to serve all requests, but with hardly any seats in that thing, this is going to be a most unpleasant experience. The new RJ is, what in German language is known as a "Verschlimmbesserung" (roughtly translating to "improvement by making it worse...")

So, the 2 main questions I'm left with after watching this very good review: 1. Is it the ultimate goal of OBB to replace all original Railjets with this new product in the end or will it only be used on specific lines? 2. Can you know in advance if you will have a Railjet 1 or 2 during the booking process? In other words, can you find out if the Business class upgrade will be worth it or not depending on the train type?
@NonstopEurotrip5 ай бұрын
1. Initially to replace the hauled EuroCity sets then to expand and complement the OG fleet. 2. Yes, look in the seating plan when you go to book a seat and you can clearly see the 2x 4 seat business class compartments at one end of the first class coaches 👍🏻
@georgsatzinger85635 ай бұрын
The RailJet 1 trainsets will definitely not be replaced ;-) Furthermore the RailJet1 transits will be even modernized in the near future. Currently the ÖBB has way to less high speed coaches so replacing ones from the 2000-2010s would be stupid if their are even ones from the 80s with no air conditioning in service (Vienna to Villach) The eight RailJet 2 trainsets which are from the first series travel ONLY on the route Munich Verona. All other RailJet Services will be still hauled by first generation. In the future their are 19 more RailJet 2 trainsets and even 14 new double decker trainsets ;-) The 19 more RailJet 2 will travel on the new Koralmbahn from Villach - Klagenfurt - Graz to Vienna. And the double Decker RailJet on Services from Vienna to Salzburg

It's a case of choose your pain, you'll either have level boarding with a lot of steps inside the train (has to be done due to the boggies of the train), or you won't have level boarding which means a lift is always required to get wheelchairs on and off the train, but you won't have steps inside. I honestly don't know which is better or worse, and I'm an ambulatory wheelchair user... As for the gendered toilets, I personally appreciate it, especially if people adhere to it and don't use the "wrong" one out of convenience. Men do have a tendency to spray like a punctured garden hose when they stand up to pee, and many men insist on standing to pee even in a public restroom, even on a moving train. As a woman, I prefer the restroom to not have pools of piss on the toilet seat and floor, and having piss all over the place is less likely to happen in the ladies restroom than in a non gendered restroom. If people would just sit down to pee, and actually leave the restroom in the same condition as they'd like to see it themselves when taking a call from nature, I wouldn't have any issues with non gendered restrooms anywhere. But as it is, I do not generally like public restrooms that aren't gender divided. The seats on this train look absolutely awful, I've seen pews in old churches with better ergonomics... My butt and spine was crying in agony as I was watching the video from the comfort of my own bed with a heating pad under my lower back. The seats could have been good had they only been less boxy and actually had some positioning support for the passengers. The business class compartment looked like a scam with that little leg space! The only reason anyone should ever use Business class on this train would be if 2 people are traveling together and have a whole compartment to themselves to have a more private space so they can discuss business stuff or whatever in private, without disturbing other passengers around them.

In 2008 the first Railjets (Siemens Viaggio Taurus) arrived on the market, the next generation should essentially follow the same path and be based on the Nightjet 2 (Siemens Viaggio 2 Vectron?). But the Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB seems to be heading towards the same solution as the WestBahn with these KISS 3. for 2026. However, for the Easter holidays 2024, the first Railjet 2 units have arrived. The next generation Railjet was developed and built by Siemens Mobility Vienna and is based on the same platform used by the new Nightjet trains. ÖBB had initially ordered eight trains, but has now ordered an additional 19, for a total of 27 Next Generation Railjets without bringing in my opinion any real improvement in comfort, especially in business class for equipment that has been planned for the future Brenner tunnel of nearly 60 km... What about the 50 ÖBB 1216 TAURUS 3 locomotives manufactured in Munich which is a request of the ÖBB on the basis of the ES64F4 locomotive? Compatibility problems with the new pilot cars of the new Railjet and Nightjet designed to work with Vectron!!

Unlike the other reviewers you made a honest report: the train is actually a downgrade from previous version and it's starting to look like a regional train (just like the new double-decker Intercity in Germany). One low floor car per set would be quite enough. Business class is a joke and even the seats in 1st class became somehow bench-like. It looks like the whole layout is being ryanaired. I'd suspect that they are silently planning to introduce a more stylish and comfortable train in the future, introducing a new brand like "Super Rail Jet" to charge more for it. Just my 2 cents. And I agree 100% with "why fix if it ain't broken".

Hey, nice video. As for the train itself, I generally think it's great and I even find the seats very comfortable. The business class thing was clearly a misstep, there's no denying that. Fortunately, you can exchange seats, said one of the ÖBB once. Accessibility is a difficult issue, I think they should have done it like with the new Nightjets, with all cars generally having steps at the doors and one car with barrier-free doors. Personally, it doesn't bother me the way it is now, as I rarely move through the entire train. The thing about the gender-segregated toilets is pretty unnecessary, but it doesn't bother you, does it? (Of course no one on the train pays attention to it anyway xd)

The internal steps are ridiculous, even here in the US that would never be permitted on a new train for accessibility reasons. This was a deliberate choice by OBB, we use a variant of these cars in the US as the new Amtrak Venture cars and Brightline cars and they have no internal steps and full level boarding at stations with 51 inch platforms, or a wheelchair lift for stations with low platforms.

Level bording will be essential in the future. With the ICE-L and the ICE5 being the next new trains which will implement this feature ;-) Therefore the RailJet 2 is very future prove. Imagine you are a wheelchair user ~ in the past it was very complicated with a lift on a door to excess the train with the help of staff. Also for luggage and strollers entry is now way more easy. Other than the ICE-L ~ which will have no steps ~ when walking through the carriages it is really a bummer that their are so many steps. Furthermore some areas are really narrow 😕

@@NonstopEurotrip Ultimately it's impossible to have a low-level floor over the bogies, so if you want to have level boarding, then there MUST be internal steps. Talgo circumvents this by simply not using bogies at all, but every train with conventional bogies will have this issue. Step-free entry is way more important than step-free walkthrough, so I do think that this is an improvement for mobility and accessibility. I haven't tried these trains myself, but it seems that the biggest passenger issue is that the first class and business class seats have gotten worse. I always travel second class, so for my purposes this train seems to be about equal to the original, except for the trash bin issue!
