Hello and welcome back to Italy, for an exciting video aboard a highspeed train that very nearly doesn't exist today!
Today we will be travelling in Business Class onboard one of Trenitalia's ill-fated ETR700 EMUs from Bologna to Pescara along the stunning Adriatic Coast. These trains used to be know as the Fyra V250 and were due to run highspeed services from Amsterdam to Brussels, but these ceased after just 39 days of operation due to many problems. I hope you enjoy the video!
Date of Filming: 9/9/21
Camera: GoPro Hero 7 Black
Operator: Trenitalia
Departure: Bologna, Italy
Arrival: Pescara, Italy
Cost: Business Class - €41.90 (£36.26, $43.91)

The legend of the Fyra is difficult to shake in the Netherlands haha, they tried to pin the blame on NS for running it at its *designed* speed and complained about the snow lol (that was without the corrosion and battery fires). Glad to see Hitachi are picking up the pieces from AnsaldoBreda!

Those Ansaldo breda high speed trains are lucky to be running well, anothere high speed train that Ansaldo breda made was the DSB IC4 , which basically is hated by everyone in Denmark and has a nuts story that goes into goverment corruption. Anothere cazy thing about them is that ONE IS SITTING IN LYBIA which was suppose go to Denmark, its going to be fased out by 2024 or 2025

The final technical report on the Frya is amazing reading (I think it's linked on wikipedia). The trains were just SO bad, absolute junk, and dangerous too. And some of the issues are so basic, they even have steel welded directly to aluminium in the structure, which just means unavoidable corrosion problems. The IC4 is legendary too, the "best" thing about one in Libya is that Ansaldo-Breda actually claimed to have delivered it to Denmark when they knew it was in Libya all along (Gadhafi's birthday present) and tried to bill DSB for it, saying DSB must have somehow lost a whole train.

I was born in Bologna, and used the Adriatic railway many times. Basically now with the ETR 700s they have changed the Frecciabianca services into Frecciargento over there. Usually most services with ETR 700s run non stop between Bologna and Rimini, whilst I believe yours also called at Faenza Forlì and Cesena. And even in Riccione, which usually high speed trains skip during the off peak seasons (InterCity trains do stop there though)

A little note about the remark on trains punctuality at 18:42 - On average, about 90% of Trenitalia trains arrive at destination on time. In the last 30 days (June 11 to July 10) the average was 87.4%, possibly because of the increased summer traffic. Trenitalia "normal standards" is indeed pretty good...

@@alanwilliams2284 Japan also has much better infrastructure, because they have spent a ton of money on their railways. Trenitalia does not build the infrastructure. They only run the trains. Any place in the world could run services as punctual as in Japan, if the needed investments into infrastructure and rolling stock were made. But Italy doesn't have that sort of infrastructure, and therefore Trenitalia can't achieve that sort of punctuality. But most countries are not willing to spend so much money on ensuring punctuality.

@@wasmic5z I't' not a matter of infrastructure. On the Tokaido high speed line between Tokyo and Osaka, built in 1964, japaneses are able to run one train every 4 minute with 100% punctuality. No refurbishment to the interior of this ETR700, the 3-class configuration will remail - Trenitalia is only rebranding all its high-speed trains under the Frecciarossa brand (the previous branding didn't make much sense anymore since all ETRs now operate both on dedicated high-speed and conventional lines) Also, I wanna add that a big problem of the ETR700 are the toilets: there are only 5 in this 8-coach train. The ETR700 was designed to run on shorter distances (Amsterdam-Brussels) so this would have been fine, but in Italy these trains mosly cover much longer distances - especially the Venice to Lecce service which covers almost 1000km in a little under 9 hours. Compare this with the ETR500s or the Frecciabianca services which have double the number of toilets.

These trains are designed by Pininfarina. The nose was a stylistic reference to the Hondekop electric units that used to run the Benelux services the ETR700 were intended for. Make no mistake- originally, they were terrible. This was partly because each train was custom built, with no clear standards for wiring etc. Also, there were numerous build quality problems. It is actually nice to see them sorted out and useful though. There is a UK saying "you can't polish a turd"- well unless it is an ETR700, in which case you can!

The problems certainly could have been resolved, but that would have taken a lot of time and money and we still have to wait and see how these trains perform in the long term. You also have to keep the issues with the DSB IC2 and IC4 in mind, which never have been resolved and never will be. All in all I think the NMBS and NS made the right decision at the time. (This was a combined Dutch/Belgian project.) It is also true that the train was not even the main issue with the whole project: they tried to replace a fully open and flexible intercity service with a high speed train with mandatory reservation, which would have been totally unsuitable for this line. (For people not acquainted with trains in the Netherlands and Belgium: mandatory reservation and airline style ticketing are not a thing on regular train services in both countries, with the exception of some high speed trains to other countries and maybe some night trains.)

It's not as simple as you make it out to be. Ansaldo and Breda may have made great trains in the past, but the V250 was just rubbish. Bits should not just fall off a train, not in the first month, not ever. No wonder everything was sold to Hitachi. Also note the six year gap between their being pulled from service in the Low Countries, and the start of services in Italy. It's not like they just changed the colour scheme and left it at that. The basic problem was that the Dutch railways, in their ambition to be more than a glorified tram system, put out a tender for a train that nobody wanted to build. A 300 km/h true high speed train was too expensive, and there was the Thalys already anyway. But 200 km/h was not fast enough, although nobody could really explain why not, given the small sizes of both the Netherlands and Belgium. There were no readily available platforms. This train would have to be designed and built from scratch. And AnsaldoBreda put in the lowest bid. The rest is history.

? these weren’t minor faults that could inspire confidence in the operator/passengers, the client is entitled to a train in service whose batteries don’t blow up/metal strips don’t come off/don’t corrode and doesn’t endanger passengers, this was a multi-million pound contract, that AnsaldoBreda could not fulfil

The ETR700 was just late, small structural problems were worsened because NS drivers did not follow the security instructions provided by AnsaldoBreda. A parliamentary inquiry came to the conclusion that AnsaldoBreda was only partially the blame for the failed project. Mismanagement by the Dutch and Belgian railways are the main cause for the projects failure. The railway companies knew that these were new trains and needed proper testing but still they rushed them from the factory. The manufacturer is to blame for the high number of defects and should not have delivered them. As of today, the connection between Brussels and Amsterdam is only marginally improved.

Oh they tested them, and they failed miserably. It was really painfull to see the trains just parked outside Amsterdam Central station, completely unusable. The excuse that the Dutch weather wasnt something they, as Italians, considered was quite ridiculous. It is true that the cooperation of the Dutch and Belgum railways could have been alot better, but that had more to do with the construction of the high speed track instead of the trains, since they had nothing to do with the manufacturing as customers obviously. The high speed line is fine in The Netherlands and the stretch between Amsterdam and the Belgium border near Antwerp. This is of course shown by the Thalys service that uses the same track as these trains would have, and run up to 300 km/h. The part from Antwerp to Brussels is just super slow. Great that Hitatchi stepped in to clean up the mess though.

But I would've never payed them full price and i agree with Belgian and Dutch railways companies and their choice to cancel the contract. You're right. Adriatic line is a very old infrastructure, built between 1850 and 1870 but is fast enough (180-200 Km/h) and a very scenic route. But you should tell it to some local politicians of Romagna, Marche and Abruzzo who are trying to convince italian government to spent many billions Euros to make a new line far from the shoreline and try in the thrash the existing infrastructure.. On the other end, betweeen Florence an Bologna it's all high mountains and there is no alternative: if you want a fast service you need long tunnels.

LOL I rode it recently Trieste to Milano Centrale in 1st class as a Frecciarossa service. It was ok but still not really up to standards of the real high speed trainsets ie 1000 and refurbed 500 series. Only got up to about 150-160 km/h max, hardly the definition of real high speed, and at that the vibration was noticeable. Even staff member I talked to admitted they're a sh*t trainset. Unfortunately for Trieste it seems they have the 700 series exclusively operating their Frecciarossa services. In three days in Trieste I didn't see any other high speed series trainset in at the platform. Disappointing as Mr Seat 61 had pointed out you can tell when booking on Trenitalia which trainset you'll get and mine had appeared when booking to be operated by a refurbed 500 series. I guess this comes under "subject to operational requirements".

@@NonstopEurotrip Yeah having seen Simply Railway's more negative review of this train I got a sinking feeling when I saw the bonnet at the platform the evening I arrived in from Slovenia and Villa Opicina. Following couple of days took some local trains so was back at the station but never saw 500 or 1000 series there. Maybe it was just covering the route for sometime while the normal unit was out of service for maintenance etc. Also it ran quite late. And maybe because of that was even quite slow coming into Milano Cle. Maybe it did hit higher speeds but I was keeping an eye on it pretty regularly and I only saw 160km/h on the PID. We were almost an hour late arriving 😞 So sadly my experience on it was more similar to Simply Railway's. At least you had a positive experience 🙂

Hi from the USA! I appreciate the great content. I was curious if you are considering switching from captions to voice narration? Many have rail channels have made the leap. Almost all of the aviation channels have changed. I ask because you do some great photography and you have great information. I find myself annoyed that I miss all of the sights because I am concentrating on reading. If it was like the old silent movies where it was light reading, it would be okay. This video is a good example of a lot of "story" and the reading gets in the way of enjoying the video portion. Just a thought. :)

The Dutch failed big time on these trains. They bought the trains through a tender, realized they were not really what they needed for their network and then tried hard to cancel the contract stating the train was not safe, even if belgium and dutch railway safety agencies, NS, and third parties (even those contracted by the dutch) stated the train was fine. AnsaldoBreda even won in the courthouse.

No they didn't, almost none of that is even close to true. The trains were years late, plagued with faults from minor through to massively dangerous, and only ever ran in service under temporary exemptions. Ansaldo-Breda completely failed to meet the terms of the contract and tried to rip their customer off. And the court case they "won" in Italy was so blatantly corrupt it was ridiculous. FS bought up the trains dirt cheap, scrapped two already, and took years to make the rest workable. It might be a good deal for them, I don't know how intensively they schedule them or how many years service they expect, but NS and SNCB were 100% right to reject them and demand their money back.
@MrCityfm
@MrCityfm 2 жыл бұрын
Not true.It was the Belgian SNCB that pulled the plug first. These trains where in service for about a month. In this time: 3 trainsets had a fire, some lost parts, all had problems with loose doors, software, snow, water leaking, rusting axles. And no train was built the same. But the Belgians saw this coming, and have insurance for exactly this scenario. They even never accepted a trainset. The safety agencies revoke all permissions, and the third parties all concluded that these trainsets are unreliable, massively (possible lifethreatening) unsafe and that the electrical system has to be completely redone from scratch. And that would probably take 3-5 years. (it took Trenitalia even longer!) And even after that, the expected lifespan was no more than 20 years with skyrocketing maintenance costs.

I don't find the frontal "hood" or other parts of this train "ugly". A part from the fact that first Shinkasen and TGV rolling stocks were "hooded" too, i think that Pininfarina with this train made, as always, a good job. In this case inspired himself to older dutch trains in order to "localize" the style, to harmonise it to urban and rural landscape, historical and aesthetic context of the Netherlands. To this remarkable attention payed to cultural context Pininfarina added the usual care and skill in combining planes and curved surface which were typical of this and other master italian coachbuilders. The result is that this train has personality and is more beautiful of most trains made by contemporary builders.

And there were sere speed problems at 130-160kmh. The train could nit use the high speed section between Milan and Bologna , but the regular line .... To be continued probably ... Honestly I think saying 'they had their problems in the past' is saying it very lightly, they were abysmal and had a lot of issues. Here are some of the issues encountered during test runs. All rides had software issues halting the trains mid journey, giving unknown error codes of telling the driver there were defects with parts THAT DIDN'T EXIST. In about a 1 in 5 of the rides the pcbs for the traction equipment burned out, limiting the available power to half. This actually was one of the issues that plagued the trains for two years during testing without any fix. Doors suddenly flying open due to the breaking of springs inside them, even at top speed (250kmh) Doors only being locked when driving around, so not when stationary (meaning that you can open the doors on the wrong side of the train and fall down on the tracks at stations) live 25 kilovolt cables lying lose on top of the cab ceiling and just falling down when removing the ceiling panels. Safety systems needing constant connections to the internet and forcing the train into an emergency stop when staying too long in a tunnel. Lights to indicate vacant toilets being too bright to read. Ooh and maintenance was an issue as well, the trains were a completely new design so all parts were custom made and wore down too quickly, lowering the life expecancy to only 15 years in service, and before they were in service it was decided that after those years they would be scrapped. Trenitalia has made this less of an issue by having two of the nineteen trains as parts donors. In the end the biggest problem was that the trains were custom made because that was what NS wanted, and Alsaldobreda was the only company that actually did this. Other companies adapted existing designs, but that wasnt allowed so NS was forced to choose these trains according to European tender rules. Im glad that these trains are now in service with trenitalia, but in all ways it made sense for NS to refuse delivery of these trains, the amount of issues with these trains were just too much to accept, even if they couldve been solved by extensive reworking of the trains. Nice video though! I hope to travel on them one day, only seen one of them driving in the Netherlands, but they did always look stunning.

"Safety systems needing constant connections to the internet and forcing the train into an emergency stop when staying too long in a tunnel." I can't find any details on this but that just sounds like the ERTMS2 european standard... and it doesn't need "the internet", it needs a GSM-R signal. Of course it e-stops the train if it loses connection to the signalling system. Would you rather the train kept going without knowing what's in front and crashed into the next one? The rest of it just sounds like teething problems. The doors and power electronics were probably poorly designed and needed to be replaced... hardly a reason to scrap an entire train. "Lights to indicate vacant toilets being too bright to read." Seriously? We're listing _this_ as a major problem? lmao

"Nearly scrapped after just one month in service": yes, and they should have scrapped it altogether, as it is just crap. I lived in Belgium when it was launched as Fyra between Brussels and Amsterdam. It was a complete disaster and a serious hazard for the safety of passengers. The Italians reintroduced it later on their own domestic network for reasons of national pride but passengers' safety is not about pride, it's about life and death. Never shall I take that rolling bullshit. Every single time I book with Trenitalia, I carefully make sure it's not going to be an ETR700. Anything but that rolling coffin.
