Here is my lasting image of Jamarcus Russell. I was at the Raiders 2009 Monday night opener vs the San Diego Chargers. Russell had just throw a TD pass with 2:34 left in the 4th quarter to give the Raiders a 20-17 lead. When the Chargers got the ball back the Coliseum was going nuts. The noise was deafening and the entire team and coaching staff was up on the Raider sidelines encouraging the defense, encouraging the fans to make noise, many were waving towels, it was a chance to start the season 1-0 and everyone was up and into it except for one guy who I noticed was leisurely sitting by himself on the bench. Jamarcus Russell. Like he could’ve cared less. He never got up the whole Chargers drive which they eventually scored and won the game. I will never forget that sight. All throughout the Chargers drive I kept looking back on the bench expecting him to get up at any moment and join his teammates and coaches cheering on the defense from the sidelines but nope, he never did, he just sat there. Then I thought, ‘well maybe he’s talking to a coach who’s going over the plan of what to do on offense if the Chargers score’ but nope, he was sitting there by himself on the edge of the bench. That’s when I knew this guy was a hopeless case as a quarterback and leader.

I think for QBs, being the most physically gifted is actually a detriment because most of their success in high school in college is because of their physical gifts as opposed to skills they developed. Once they get to the nfl and the players are faster and stronger, they tend to flop because they don’t have the work ethic to actually learn how to dissect defenses.

Great post! I think this is somewhat the story of Kyler Murray, even though he's not a big guy. In all of HS, and college, he could just use his speed and agility to improvise, almost make stuff up every play. But when he got to the NFL, things were different. The 5 yard gaps he was running through were now 1 foot. His ability to outrun everyone vanished, with most DB's, and a few LBs matching his speed. His ability to muscle out of arm tackles in open field runs was met by guys with equal muscle who could if not stop him, slow up. I think this is where the problem with Kliff wanting him to study plays, and him wanting to play video games instead, came from. He could always do it his way before, but once the NFL players and coaches started to scheme for him, that was all over.

Incredible physical shape, early standout performances along with flashes of brilliance which hinted at future potential greatness in the future. It's almost as if his mental knowledge and development of skills ceased to develop, or suddenly stopped short of reaching the level required to be competitive. All successful NFL quarterbacks must reach and develop a skillset of both physical and mental toughness the rest of us probably wouldn't have the ability to comprehend or understand in today's modern position of quarterback. I hope he was able to hang on to as much of that guaranteed money as possible.

I think playing NFL QB in the modern day is the most difficult position there is in professional sports. It's obviously demanding physically, but the mental demands of knowing your offense, knowing opposing defenses, making reads and adjustments pre-snap as well as once the play has started, are just immense. Some guys just simply aren't smart enough to hold that information in their heads, and of course guys like Russell don't even try to.

Attended a OAK v SF game, and can confirm. He would just walk back to the bench after the series, put a towel over his head, and wait for the next series. Even Josh Allen is likely around 82 or so. Wind and altitude can help some, but not much more. Don't buy stories about guys throwing it 100 yards, etc. It would be like an MLB pitcher throwing a 125mph fastball).

??? How is it the owners trying to save themselves money. The contract negotiations with the NFL players means that a certain percentage of profits goes to the players. Meaning that the money is going to be spent to pay for players either way. With the rookie set pay means that the money is actually spent on proven players on 2nd, 3rd contracts and not on unproven players. The old system screwed the worse teams by getting high round draft picks that end up being busts but you pay them like stars. The current system is better. The huge money goes to proven talent and if you get lucky as a team and draft a great player sets you up to build a great team around them turning bad teams into potentially great teams. The great players are going to get paid huge money on the 2nd contracts. NFL players are not screwed at worse you can point to the franchise tag which should only be used on a player at most once if at all. But the owners screw cities not players. Forcing cities and states to pay for their stadiums or threatening to leave sounds more like black mail.

Aron M it’s common Union/company tactics. The company wants to spend as little as possible on employees. In turn, the employees want as much as possible. The solution? People not in the union yet get subjected to lower pay, higher barriers to entry, etc. it works for both parties; management saves money while employees either retain or gain more. The losers are the people who are not yet part of the union. The NFL is a great example of this because it has both an absurd barrier of entry (3 years removed from high school) and mandatory pay limits. Also, rookies have absolutely no freedom of labor, the team that drafts them owns their rights. So all the power of negotiation is already on the side of the team If we needed to “fix” rookie pay, then we need to “fix” free agency because of notable busts like Albert haynesworth, Brock osweiler, David Boston, etc. The NFLPA would never go for that, though, because that actually affects union due paying members

I was at a broncos game when he was the raiders qb and he shredded us 😂 it wasn't the craziest state day or anything but I just remember watching him pass all over our defense and feeling like he was actually going to be something.

I think he just burnt out. Everything came easy to him and he won in high school and in college. For most people that would be enough and by the time he got to the NFL the motivation was gone, the hunger was gone. It can happen when your an athlete your whole life. He was so used to being special and was not mentally ready to work and understand all of the sudden nothing is easy. Naturally he took the easy way out, he didn’t put in the effort because he didn’t develop good habits and stopped caring. Especially knowing he had already made enough money just from his rookie contract, that if he didn’t blow it all, would never have to work again a day in his life. So nothing came easy, it wasn’t fun anymore, and he stopped caring. It was also a scouting failure on the Raiders to not evaluate the mental side of him as a player. They would of seen his lack of work habits as a major red flag. Both player and organization at fault

Oh they knew. Their PI tracked him to casinos every night of the week leading up to the draft. But Al got enamored with these players and ignored things. And they really didn't have a choice I suppose. They needed a QB, that draft had no other ones, and JR was arguably one of the best prospects at QB since the 2004 draft 3 years earlier. They would have been skewered if they didn't draft him and he was even remotely good. Talent, athletic gifts, and hard work are what a player needs to make it. He had 2 of the 3, so they gambled on the 3rd improving I guess.

When he had an injured arm or shoulder while at LSU, I was walking through the ops, just outside the weight room. Russell said something to another player. The player told Russell that he would break the other arm… Apparently there was some dislike towards Russell at LSU, too.
