Heard this from my wife's uncle: He knew someone personally who was a design engineer for transmissions. The guy designed a very tough and reliable transmission that you might call "bullet proof". The higher-ups told him that his design was awesome, but they also wanted him to degrade the design so that it would intentionally fail at around 60,000 miles. They reassured him that his original "awesome" design would be used as the $$$$ replacement model after the factory original failed.

Funny you should mention that. As a Contractor, my Dad field tested “Frantz” oil filters back in the mid 60’s through 70’s. They used regular toilet paper in a remote mounted canister (in addition to the engine mounted filters) and I helped him change them on multiple pieces of trucks / equipment dozens of times as a kid. 😀 The TP held up well long term and they claimed it filtered much finer particles and trapped 20-30 times more contaminants than regular filters alone. ✌️

When I was shopping for my current car - 2017 Lexus LS460 - I already knew Toyota made some V8's that placed their starter like the one @04:00. This type of engineering is unforgivable. The designers knew this would cause big problems for owners but designed and built it like this anyway. Before I buy vehicles I spend lots of time on its forums of the car I'm thinking about buying. Such research is more useful than a hundred articles about the car in Consumer Reports. When I look for a car I already know most of the good points about it, so another article praising its merits is the very last thing I want to read. Such a configuration shows true design incompetence and I would not own a car made like this...

Many years back I stood by my opinion that: Before an Engineers product could be mass produced, that Engineer first had to demonstrate that common maintenance could be done. My family owned a Small Engine Shop (chainsaws, mowers, generators, outboards, etc). Where the desired result was constantly trying to make everything more compact. So when doing a very common carburetor rebuild on a chainsaw ends up involving removing the engine from the body of the saw… well that’s pretty stupid. Made worse by not being able to run the engine if it’s not in the body, causing you to fight together it out, do repair, fight together it in, and hope Togo’s that you didn’t screw up, or that it only needs further minor adjustments. The other genius idea is to put a fuse link INSIDE the tubular frame of a generator. That 1 was a complete joke. If you wanted to replace the fuse but in its original manufacturer position, you cut the frame, replace fuse, then weld frame BUT don’t melt the wires? (Warranty replacement of fuse said to cut the original fuse wires and replace leaving the new fuse link outside the frame and secure with zip ties. (Leaving the blown fuse inside the frame😂)
