My FAVORITE hack is to use pocket change or washers when you dont have the right size wrench. I.e. the nut is a 17mm and all you have is a 3/4 so you stick a quarter in the jaw of the wrench along one of the flats on the nut to shim it. Has saved my butt more than once in the field pulling blown hydraulic lines 😂

yeah, or like when you don't have a 10mm and there is just no good imperial equivalent... I used that once, and it saved some swearing and a 25 mile trip to the home despot. (and it's ALWAYS the 10mm. every. single. time.)

Right it is always the fn 10mm. I found a small set of just 10mm on a small socket holder came with 1/4" & 3/8" drive sockets, standard & deepwell, a swivel.. Basically its a variety pack of nothing but 10mm. I was a bit scared to even open it at first bc I knew at least 1 if not all of them would magically grow legs & run off to play hide & seek soon as I opened the package..

I had an 80 year old handyman. One of the things I learned from him is when you don't want to mess up threads wrap it with a rag. You would think that the rag would just tear through, but it actually works. I'm sure you could do the same thing with the wrench trick. Just throw a rag around the threads.
@thomasgeorge4384
@thomasgeorge4384 8 ай бұрын
The rag will definitely tear, that's why you use a rag, but it packs itself in the threads and in its destruction preserves the surface of the part. Keeping this trick in my back pocket in case I ever need to apply torque to threaded ends.
@That70sChannel
@That70sChannel 8 ай бұрын
@@thomasgeorge4384 that makes sense, actually there's probably other ways that you could do that I don't know maybe pipe dope or something
@Slammo2001

Or !!!!!.... just hear me out !???? .....uh humhhh ..... You put the wrenches... just like you would a pipe wrench ... on the actual pipe part of the " pipe" ... and not at the end with the threads !.... crazy idea ... I know !!
@That70sChannel
@That70sChannel 8 ай бұрын
@Slammo2001 of course. But in this case we're talking about all you have are threads showing and there's no pipe to grab, without buggering up threads. But yeah in the video it would have buggered them up regardless
@thomasgeorge4384
@thomasgeorge4384 8 ай бұрын
@Slammo2001 duh. That having been said, sometimes you get to a part of the job where someone left you a problem where you have to apply torque directly to threads, like a double male pipe union in a fitting that needs replacing, or a part where there is no other way to get a wrench on it. And bull me no shit, I have seen the stupid fittings of which I speak, and I have had to educate engineers on how to turn a wrench, how to use degreaser, and why a bolt will be a problem.

Look at the original video again, he put the pipe deep into the shoulder of the wrench, behind the head. Seems like that would help to reduce damage to the threads, by spreading out the force, where the smaller wrench concentrates all the force onto a single small area on the side of the wrench head. So - use a pipe wrench, but if you don't have one, do what the original video did with size & position.
@grandparedpill2695

It's perfect for taking off an old piece of pipe that you got to get rid of, other than that you're going to bugger the threads. Especially if it's something like brass! Stainless steel might be a little tougher, but you already got to use enough pipe dope and Teflon tape to pave a parking lot.
