LG released a couple new Gram Laptops and a new portable monitor, but it seems that LG may be getting a bit too confident as their pricing creeps higher and higher… Is the LG Gram still an easy recommendation, or should you save your money and get something different?

I love the story going from "in my opinion, the keyboard is terrible" over "actually it is my subjective perspective and it is not so bad " to "I WAS RIGHT IT IS TERRIBLE AND I CAN PROVE IT" The new Lab is a real treat for consumer decision making, because i actually thought "maybe Alex has really high standards" and now i know it is objectively justified

I just have to comment on this. I have an LG Gram 17 - 11gen i7 model. I think it's the 2021 model. I bought it on sale from Costco for about $1300 out the door with tax. I'm a software engineer and I figured I'd give it a try and take it back if I didn't like it. I love it! The keyboard is fine. The screen is gloss and wish it was matt like the newer Grams (but it's not a deal breaker -- you just adjust the screen angle). I've been using it daily for about 12 months -- no issues. The battery routinely lasts around 6 hours of continuous use. The speakers are not very loud. The CPU is plenty fast for productivity and some light gaming (Diablo3, Valorant). And I'm gaming on the battery! It came with a 500gb high speed NVMe SSD and I added another 980gb NVMe SSD for less than $100 to the second drive slot. If this machine dies and I can't fix it.. I'll immediately go out and buy another one. And yes.. the weight is a game changer.. I pick it up with one hand while it's open like it's nothing.

I still have my 2018 Gram, and still love it (first time I've ever kept a laptop for four years). It, like this one, was overpriced, but it hit the sweet spot for what I wanted to prioritize (lightest weight possible, great battery life, and expandable memory and storage). I'm kind of glad that LG hasn't really improved on the original Gram, because my temptation to shell out the inflated amount of money they want for the new ones to replace my trusty 2018 is non-existent. Thanks LG.

Actually that portable monitor is amazing and probably the coolest thing on that table. I have it. Crazy bright, 16inch 16:10 aspect ratio, good colours, there's practically nothing else on the market that can match it. I pair it with my MacBook Pro 16 and I have a two monitor workstation that fits in a single laptop sleeve. It's 🔥 Edit: Just got to the end and realised that they did get to it. Since they don't know, I'll tell you, it's practically unmatched in terms of specs and the pricing is very reasonable for what it is. Most portable monitors are dim, require two cables, have weak colours and nearly all of them are smaller and have a standard aspect ratio. It's practically a unicorn. For people always in an office they probably don't understand what a godsend that product is for anyone who travels a lot but it's easily my favourite tech purchase in the last 10 years

I guess one of the best selling points of the Gram lineup - is the weight. Have you compared it to the other models with similar processors?! It’s very thin and lightweight. Even 17 inch model weighs like 1.4 kilos, or something. XPS 15 starts at like 2 kilos. In laptops that’s a very big difference! When you carry it around on a trip, or something - heavy laptops quickly become a really big inconvenience.

I recently got the 14 inch 2021 model for 750 bucks. Sure it's 11th Gen instead of the new one, but considering it's the i7 1TB 16GB RAM model it was an amazing deal. The build quality is definetly sub 1000 dollars. The screen is alright, though not that bright, 1080p+ resolution is fine for working on it as long as you don't need many pixels. I really wish they would add better speakers and better cooling at the expense of a little more weight. The speakers are awful, they even sound worse because they're on the bottom. The CPU gets thermal limited very easily in multi threaded tasks, and because there's not much mass for the heat to escape to the fans have to start spinning very early, they're not loud during normal use but still audible.

How do you compare the flexibility of the chassis of a 1kg laptop to a 2kg chunk of aluminum that costs twice the price? (they hiked the price but anyway the point about the price stands) I have a Gram from 2019 (in part I followed your recommendation and it was a great choice for me). The screen is wobbly and the flexibility of the chassis is noticeable if you try, but both aspects that don't affect me once I've begin to work on the thing because it really doesn't affect the usability. I never realized how awful 99% of laptop speakers were until I got a MacBook. Now I take it for granted and whenever I hear any of my friends' Windows laptops I have to really try and not laugh out loud. I just don't understand how Windows laptops are so bad in this regard, surely some decent speakers can't be that hard to figure out and implement into their larger chassis. My phone has better speakers than my gf's massive gaming laptop, and when the fans are cranked they're inaudible.

@@PerplexedPhoton It's not a priority for most laptops. Especially for the really large ones (where one would thing the space means it comes for free). I had a ThinkPad P70 once and one lf the few things I did was put one of my favorite songs, cranked it up, and... was terribly disappointed in how shit it was, even compared to some mid-level laptops from some friends. Used headphones afterwards even at home. MacBook Pro is the gold standard, but there's still some other laptops like the XPS line that do a decent job. The real trick though is not to care about the laptops speakers to the point where you overspent, just get a Bluetooth speaker.

I use headphones or wireless buds so dont care about the speakers and I normally use a wireless keyboard so dont care about the keyboard (although I've never encountered the issues discussed in this video). I love taking this thing from room to room and in my backpack for a commute. I would like to upgrade to the 12th gen at some point because the glossy display does get annoying sometimes but the colours have always been great. Would have liked the option to pay more for a gpu option though. If I have the cash I'd get a XPS 17 but those are a galaxy away in terms of price. However LG do over charge and when new gen come out the old gen do get some crazy reductions in price which is when is the best time to purchase.

The Gram's main selling point in my opinion (I own a 2019 13" model) is that it weighs almost nothing. yes it flexes, but mine weighs 2 to 2.5 lbs, has a beautiful touch screen, fantastic trackpad, has 2 NVME slots and amazing battery life, etc. and it's so incredibly light that I was able to bring it onto Military airplanes and watch movies and stuff in C-130's, C-17's for long across the globe flights where I'm sitting in a cargo net seat. I can hold it up with two fingers while I'm squirming around in that shitty seat trying to get comfortable. I can charge it using a pretty lightweight portable battery pack. I can watch shows in bed with it on my chest and have no uncomfortable oppressive weight. I LOVE my gram. It weighs half as much as all the 13" apple laptops I've ever held and it doesn't have stupid sharp edges for no reason like the apple either.

Pretty much. The only reason I feel a laptop should even reach over $1.5k is because its super security focused and has tons of features to protect your data. I've been using a $500 Lenovo Flex 14 with a Ryzen 5, 12GB of RAM and I upgraded the WiFi card and storage. Apart from the battery losing capacity, its been going super strong for almost three years with me now. I really don't see any reason why I would need to own a super expensive laptop considering the specs are not really that different to mine.
@huaen8880
@huaen8880 Жыл бұрын
It's all about the peripherals and build quality. I think that a good comparison would be why people spend more money on expensive peripherals on desktops although cheap ones can do just fine and the specs don't change - It's all about the better experience. Similarly, there's value to buying a more expensive laptop that is thin and light, better battery life (excellent for portability), better build quality, is more repairable due to standardised parts (especially true for business laptops), has a better keyboard and trackpad, better speakers, better display, and/or a better webcam. All these features may not improve the specs, but they can improve the laptop experience more drastically than a spec bump will. That being said, I'd still be hesitant about spending over $2000 on a laptop, especially one like this that lacks so many features, when you can get a macbook or even a windows laptop competitior that does all of the above better at a much lower price like $899.

@@huaen8880 I completely understand spending a little more to get something that isn't complete trash and has a good battery...But I feel like when you buy better peripherals and upgrades for a desktop you actually get your moneys worth most of the time...at the end of the day if you send $2000 on a laptop, it might be nice but it's still a laptop...Most of the laptop users I know use external mouse and keyboard anyway unless they are on the road...I just feel like the price for what you get out of a high end consumer laptop just isn't worth it...If you are buying a gaming laptop with a 3080 or something for $2000 then I can kind of understand it, but spending that kind of money just for making zoom calls and google docs and not even having a DGPU or only getting 3050 is absolutely crazy to me

@@brucepreston3927 It's extremely valuable if you're doing tons of work on a laptop and are frequently moving around. If you're just gaming with your laptop at home and only bring your laptop out occasionally (which is the vast majority of people), it's probably more worth it to invest in good external peripherals. However, for professionals, students, and other people with the above workflows, it's absolutely worth it to spend extra money for all the above benefits. It's far more valuable to have a light, powerful laptop with great battery life and an excellent keyboard and trackpad than to have a good gpu but a very heavy laptop with poor battery life, build quality and peripherals (gaming laptops) when you're lugging it around to classes every day or travelling around often.

@@huaen8880 That's true. And here I come in again to mention my Flex 14. It's light, portable, it's a 2in1, came with a digital pen and everything. They keyboard is good, and the trackpad is decent enough to be usable in a pinch, but I've always hated track pads with a passion so I have a $25 Logitech G305 with me at all times. Again, it only cost me $500 brand new and I can do literally everything I need it to. I'm a school teacher, so I carry it around all the time and I'm constantly working on it. My only complaint is the battery life but I have to be fair and remember I've been abusing it for quite a while now. Lenovo still offers parts and service for it too, so I can just buy and replace the battery myself if I need to.

We picked up one of the 16" Grams for my wife about a month ago. It was a Costco model and I forget the exact specs. $1,100 after $400 off. As soon as we got it out of the box I was unimpressed with the build. I understand that a big feature of the product is how thin and light it is, but it felt like a prop. There were two real deal breakers that lead us to take it back. The first is that it has zero ability to game. We picked up Valheim the same day we got this and my 11 year old desktop wiped the floor with the Gram. With no discreet GPU my expectations were low, but it really was awful. The second thing we disliked was that the Gram ran super hot. The area above the F keys on the keyboard was extremely hot under zero load. We returned the Gram and bought a Lenovo Legion 5 with a 3050 Ti for the same price. I'm not sure what LG is thinking with their pricing or with the general quality of these laptops. I would encourage anybody to pass on this generation.

The prices might look better when they are on sale. They are probably not meant to be sold full price and a 30-40% off could trick uninformed buyers. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Lightweight machines can be great, but not when it comes at the cost of nearly everything else. These things have terrible performance across the board at a premium price. I can only imagine they'll be heavily discounted in the near future so people will think they're getting a $2k laptop for $1.2k.

I think the main problem is that they opted for the much higher TDP P-series chips this gen to keep up with other brands that use beefier (and heavier) cooling, should have stayed with the U-series. I have both and while I can live with the new model it does run hotter and louder than last years model/gen.

Frankly, if you’re going for a lightweight machine around $1000, it makes absolutely no sense not to just grab a MacBook. What kind of serious work will you be doing on a Gram anyways? The best thing I ever did for my sanity was switch my parents to Apple devices tbh.

You mean the light thing that is lighter than you feel it should be feels lighter than it should be? Im shocked... and you were unimpressed with how it felt lighter and more unsubstantial than a heavier laptop would be? Why?

The 16Z90P was actually the 2021 model, and I still prefer mine too over the new 17" 2022 model (I have both)

The flex on the Gram line has always blown my mind. It literally bends significantly as you open the screen under the tension of the hinge...buh whaaa

They key with LG Gram is to always buy last year's model when they're on stupid clearance sales. Got myself a 2021 Gram 17, i7, 16GB, 500GB (Upgraded to 2 x 500GB) for $1150. This is with Indian taxes so US equivalent would be like $850 or so. For a large 17 inch 16:10 color accurate display, it's freaking amazing pricing. This 17 inch laptop only weighs 1.3kg. You really can't beat that.

LG gram 2021 and Gram 2022 are selling at almost same price. Gram 2022 always have about 30-35 discount, even introductory price also had about 30% discount. The price difference between 2021 and 2022 is less than 100$ on amazon India. I bought 2021 model because I read reviews that 2022 model runs really hot. The price difference wasn't an issue for me. Weight, display, heat and noise mgmt and battery capacity(though battery is degrading fast) are good everything else is less than satisfactory.

@@chetan_naik Fair enough. I bought my 2021 gram when 2022 hadn't launched yet. About heat, there's some black tape thing inside blocking the direct airflow for some reason. I removed that and the heat is down significantly. It's a bit of a mod, but it got my temps down significantly and I quite like the size, weight and performance of this thing. It's a great laptop for Linux. The selling point for me personally was 17 inch screen on a 1.3kg weight. I have separate SSDs for Linux and Windows. I'm fairly happy with what I have personally. I switched from M1 Macbook Pro where 8GB RAM wasn't cutting it for me.
