@@bluetheminx In 1992, when this video was shot, people didn't yet seriously consider that the human race was on its way OUT. It's obvious now, but it wasn't back then. And the vast majority of people knew what AIDS was, but didn't really see it as a threat to humanity in general, since they hadn't lived through an actual pandemic. That's why people say Carlin was ahead of his time.

@@frankpentangeli7945 wow what knowledge and credentials you must be blessed with to speak for the entire human race . It’s actually hilarious because ancient civilizations (who’s knowledge has been lost to history) not only understood these things but also predicted future civilizations and their impact on the environment . So again “ahead of their time” is a very stupid phrase to anybody possessing rational thought or that has done any historical study.

@@bluetheminx You're ridiculous. How can you possibly know that "ancient civilizations ... understood these things but also predicted future civilizations and their impact on the environment" IF THEIR KNOWLEDGE HAS BEEN LOST TO HISTORY?!? Are you a time traveler or clairvoyant? What "ancient civilizations" are you referring to, and what did they say about future civilizations and their impact on the environment exactly? And by the way, the phrase "ahead of his time" is a simple colloquialism meant to describe someone who noticed trends and said things before the rest of society was fully aware of them. It's not fucking revolutionary, and does NOT refer to some Nostradamus character with the ability to actually see the future! So piss off with your outrage, ok? Take a pill ... sounds like you need one.

This guy was basically my father figure after my dad passed. I first saw his material in the late 90s. My siblings and mom all introduced me to him when I was in my single digit age. Probably too young for a kid to be watching his material lmao but he spoke the truth. Understand that some people miss him more than family and those people miss the way he made sense of the world. I'm waiting for the next Carlin and we'll probably never get him. I did standup in high school and tried to be like him and I never could do it. Can't be done. George Carlin is one of a kind and can't be replicated, though in my youth I wished I could be him.

This monologue actually reminded me of a poem, "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Sara Teasdale. It is a bit morbid at the end, but the image it paints and the quiet feeling of realizing the magnitude of the planet's history it leaves feels related to both your thoughts and Carlin's. Thanks for the reaction. - Cheers

Interesting that you mentioned Thoreau's " Walden" as a literary reference, for the recommendation that I have has a connection to that poem as well. My recommendation is to watch the live version of Nightwish at Tampere "Greatest Show on Earth". It is long but has many literary references along with many musical references as well. But, there is also a piece called "My Walden" at this same show which is also worth a watch, and possible reaction and comment. Should you choose to do the "Greatest Show on Earth" make sure that you watch all the way through the credits. It was the last thing to be performed at this concert. Here is the link with subtitles so you won't get too lost: kzbin.info/www/bejne/apm3colnjNWNn6M Note: This will be out of your normal wheelhouse of things that you have done, but growth is getting to know new stuff.

Yes, George and Lenny Bruce were two great teachers. They taught truth through humor because they knew that humor made reality more palatable I would recommend you re-think Elon and his goal because it adds to what George is saying. Expanding our awareness to see the galaxy as a much bigger place is a way to deal with over population, new discoveries. (Space exploration always does that ) and maybe encourages that " we are part of something bigger " mantra .

His bits always have more than comics so he pushes you to think about it and his way to doing it just unique. You can even say his executions are like songs or marches, it always have some kinds of rhythm. Some times fast and some times slow, some times loud and some times in whispers. He is a true virtuoso! So no comic has his abilities at the same time, Chapelle good at content, Gervais good at content and usage of scientific materials but none of them is a Carlin. My only "gripe" if you will is about your feelings of going to Mars. My own personal belief is that consciousness is something to be treasured. In all of earths four and a half billion years of life, humans are the first species to have it. Extinction is the fate of all species ever born on earth. Every time I see this bit from Carlin, it reminds me of the first big pollutant that threatened all life in the planet: Oxygen. When the first organisms capable of photosynthesis appeared and filled the atmosphere with oxygen, they almost nihilated the cyanobacteria that populated the Earth back then. One of the largest ecological disasters created by non decomposable materials of the past were trees. When they appeared, the bacteria at the time were not capable of decomposing wood, so dead trees accumulated there for millennia until they petrified. It took a long time (long for human standards) for nature to evolve to create bacteria and termites capable of processing wood. I'm sure even if plastic grows so much to suffocate the human civilization, in a million years there will be bacteria capable to decompose it. Humans might not be here to see it, though. I agree with you that pollinating bees are a concern, but as George Carlin said in this bit, it's human self interest to preserve our species and trying to pass it as selfless interest for the planet is a little deceiving.

You asked for a modern comedian for comparison: I'd offer Stuart Lee on the evidence of this clip . I watched this because I read that Carlin was so widely respected. He's not so well known in the UK I was surprised. It looks very tin-eared and not actually funny to me. Undoubtedly fluent and virtuosic - which is a phenomenal thing to achieve technically, , but in this clip he has created a straw man to satirise. Yes, there are people romanticising polar bears, bees or whatever. And yes, if you asked them what they are most worried about , a great many would say 'me' or 'my kids' or 'humanity' .Is that 'narrow self interest'? I literally have never met a person, even a vehement environmentalist , who has talked about 'saving the planet' . He's criticising some marketing campaigns, not people. He probably knows this, which is why it felt sad to watch for me - you can hear from the audience reaction that he is gratifying, not challenging them. .. Of course the planet will outlive us. Duh! Is that really worth a round of applause? He doesn't seem to be denying that human ARE doing harm to their environment , so if he doesn't; care about the self destructive tendencies of the human race and their dire consequences (a very very fair point) why not just say that ("I don't give a shit that millions will die if the world boils etc..." ). But he's not able to do this - (why?) - he instead offers us the 'big electron'. It is a category error - if someone's child dies at birth , they are unlikely to be much consoled by being told that they dwell on the big electron. Or if I punched GC in the face he would be unlikely to tell me - "Hey no sweat, we both live on the big electron'. People; care about stuff in the here-and-now, that is what being alive is - the here and now - and that's OK by me. Even if the universe doesn't;t care.

This is the only George Carlin bit that I've had some trouble with. I can understand the overall point he's trying to make, but I feel like worrying about other animals is a little bit our duty since it is our actions that is causing global warming and the current mass extinctions.
@zn4rf
@zn4rf 2 жыл бұрын
"our actions that is causing global warming" you are wrong about that one. Global warming and cooling is something the earth has experienced before we were here and there will be after we are gone. Sure we are contributing to the process but nothing more. The carbon cycle / data on co2 level though the millions/billions of years before us is a good way to start. It is not wrong to do something but it should be something that makes sense and not stupid stuff like "plant trees n shit". Planting trees btw does not help it only moves the problem of co2 into the future and makes it a problem for those that come after us, trees are a bad co2 storage after all. No hate but reading the same stuff again and again gets a bit old.
@joshbull623
@joshbull623 2 жыл бұрын
Our actions are speeding up global warming, not causing it. History has been very clearly defined by scientists with multiple global warmings and ice ages and ozone thickness changes long before humans ever existed. Started prior to even Mammals being a thing actually. I get your point though, but I don't like it when it is said like that, it wreaks of politics and sensationalizing. Characterizing the problem, and its scope, correctly matters. If accuracy can be ignored for the sake of a gut punch, we might as well pull random numbers out of the ether. Also, fun fact, or scary fact, the mass extinction of animals by humanity is not a modern problem. We have traced its occurrence at our hand to our earliest ancestors. A bit of a scary thought as the implication is that we evolved naturally to exploit and prey upon the environment in the most destructive fashion from the very beginning. Reminds me of The Matrix where Agent Smith compares humanities behavior to nothing else that has ever lived save for a virus.

This is a rare video where I disagree with George's opinion. People have done some pretty amazing things that other creatures on the planet wouldn't be capable of for long periods of time if at all. The ego is both our enemy and best friend I think. Me personally, I'm interested in growing fruit that is becoming extinct. Things he said that weren't speculation I agree with like the fact that the globe has been handling itself far longer than we've been around. I think at the end of the day we are animals and we are designed to ensure and care about the longevity of our species. As a race, humans one goal is to survive and keep repopulating so I don't consider that to be selfish as much as the natural order. I think any species capable of preventing their own extinction, would if given the chance or knowledge.

9:40 Zero interest in humanity on Mars? I believe you didn't think that through properly. Space is our future and our ultimate goal. The first and the most important thing to every person on this planet should be exploration of the universe. Compared to that, everything else is practically just nonsense. Otherwise, why do we even exist? To be born, living our short, petty, irrelevant lives and die here, on this tiny and absolutely insignificant spec of dust, without ever trying to find out what is this all about? Come on, you can do better than that.

@@putivuelta9428 YT again deletes comments... I've stated the only factual fact in entire existence. If you don't feel a need to know what's the meaning of life, the universe and everything, then you're nothing but a huge waste of a human mind, and you should rather be born as a plant or an animal or a bacteria.

That is one of my least favourite speech of Carlin. I certainly agree that humans are not a threat to the planet, not on the long term. We are doing, however, a lot of damage on the short term.

The part where George says when we are gone that the earth will cleanse itself made me remember when we were on covid lockdown. There were reports that because of all the millions of people that weren't driving to work or traveling etc, that the air quality was almost immediately better. You could actually see the difference visually how much less smog there was.

Our impact on the planet has accelerated the need for it to commence its self cleansing process, it’s our arrogance that makes us believe we can reverse it, the changing climate is merely the first step.

George Carlin is one of my favourite comedians. I didn't always agree with everything he said but I love his perspectives. My favourite of his is the 'American Dream'. It's also a sketch that I agree with entirely. Great reaction by the way, keep up the good work!
