Gotta say I don't have an issue with FF reskinning a game. Some people don't like horror games. This is a franchise of books and movies that people really enjoy. A license to print money more so than Mansions. If it has a decent story (more than just flavor text) this could be really fun. If they would hire a great fantasy writer this could be quite the game. Can they add a dice option? Maybe someone on BGG has hacked around this. I want to chuck dice in a fantasy game. Hello? Is Efka riding a giant swan at 9:17?

Thank you for ignoring the hype surrounding this game and providing an honest review. I watched another review and they refused to say anything negative at all, so thanks for being honest. I was hoping for a fun little “RPG in a box” with the app being the dm, but it looks way too monotonous and combat looks dull to be honest. And with no memorable story, I’m gonna have to pass. plus I hate games with timers, the game turns from fun exploration and immersion in a fantasy world to a sprint where you missed most of the content. I know many people are excited for this game and I hope it turns out to be fun for them, but for me it doesn’t look like it’s worth $100 usd. Maybe at a significant discount it would be worth trying out. Thanks again for the honest review. Oh I forgot to mention that I highly recommend Sorastro’s channel, he’s an incredible painter and does fantastic work with Imperial Assault and Descent among other games.

I'm always iffy about these campaign games because the narrative elements always seem so flat. Gloomhaven is at least engaging mechanically but when the mechanics are light and the story dull, I'd rather just make up my own stories in a tabletop rpg. The stories might not be any better but at least they're our own. Looked it up and there's even a ruleset based on DND 5th Edition called Adventures in Middle Earth that I now must own.

Damn. The LOTR theme isn't the most exciting for me personally, but this one actually caught my interest for a while. And it seems like an admirable effort from FFG, but we're in a post Gloomhaven world and the bar is incredibly high. In my opinion, they've had serious difficulty in recent years designing campaign adventure games with all the necessary ingredients in place: a deep immersive story, exciting and varied combat, satisfying rewards and loot, etc. (Arkham Horror LCG would be a major exception, but it's not exactly in the same category). Oh well, I guess on the plus side I now have one less giant expensive game purchase on my mind.

I think that there’s an aim here to 1. Sell the game to a new audience and 2. we have been somewhat spoiled by a lot of sooo good RPG in a Box and Tactical skirmish games. I’m ok ish with the starter box being a basic starter box as long as we see some support from FFG (Runewars anyone?) if we get a few regular expansions I think the app is accomplished enough to build on and MoM has had some great updates over the years - so if they use the license well this could become something special - so hopefully the first expansion will be out by the time I’ve painted the base box ;) I’m looking forward to getting it out with the unabridged three film score on the Sonos, oh and let’s be honest whatever the RRP is the general price is around 70 pounds, still a lot but not so unusual.

Well I won't get this now, I just ordered MoM with Streets of Arkham anyway, but I'm sure there will be a zillion expansions to JiME and there's a good chance that they will increase campaign quality. Same thing happened with the Arkham LCG, Zealot was pretty cool when it was released, but Dunwich is a big improvement. I really like the FFG stuff, but none of their recent games felt complete to me from the start and this constant need of buying a huge core box and tons of expensive expansions is getting a bit annoying.

Well, the best part was not even mentioned... This game will deliver the spare minimum to enjoy it. Everything else will be sold via additional boxes after. The first monster expansion is already teasered in the app right now and the game is not even out. I don't know if I am liking this behaviour especially with such a high initial price tag for the core game. Given that all following expansions will most likely also come with a simliar high price respective to their content. Sure I will get enjoyment out of this but the forshadowed future plans seems odd to me. I have invested already in the lcg of lotr and it costed me about one grand since it's release for a full collection. With an upkeep cost of about 150 euro per year if I wish to continue having a full collection. Decent also took about 300 euros out of my wallet before I stopped buying more tiny boxes with next to no truly new gameplay. I enjoyed both games quite some time for sure but not nearly enough for such a high price. And both games are significantly less pricy than Journey seems to be. So I am not keen on a third run with a ffg buisness model. Maybe it is the licence that costs so much, but my assumption is that the licence is more like a neccessary selling point for a profitable reskin of already developed mechanics from other games. The story could have been what lured me in but most reviews and playthroughs out there are painting a relatively clear picture that it will not even succeed the story part of the lcg. At least not at the moment and most likely never cause to tight restraints that are coming with the lotr IP.

MoM 2e is probably my favorite bg that handles narrative and player choice. Loose mechanics didn't bother me too much their because of how well the atmosphere held up with the in-app descriptions of literally everything. I already have this game pre-ordered, and I'm a big LotR nut, but hearing that it's narratively weaker is kind of disappointing. I'm still looking forward to playing it, but I have a feeling it'll end up being a miss for me just like Legacy of Dragonholt compared to Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective. Which is to say LoD felt like a glorified CYOA where I was more expecting an "open world, freedom of choice" experience.

A great review -- and it confirmed me in my decision not to buy this (even though I am usually a sucker for anything LOTR-related). I was surprised you did not mention anything about what I find the problematic marriage of an app and board games -- my objections are twofold: 1) practically, apps by their very nature eventually become unsupported; if I spend a c-note on a game, I don't want the game to become obsolete/unplayable in a few years. 2) from your review, it seemed like the entire gameplay was app driven, so that essentially the minis and boards and cards have become an adjunct to the app, rather than the other way around -- I play board games to unplug, and I find the mixing of apps and board games a pernicious development. But then again, perhaps I am being an old fart about things. Thanks for all of your work -- sorry I missed the KS (any other way to support your great work?).

I'm sorry, but I just can get into App Driven games, I love Mansions of Madness concept, And I had both editions, I love that the app solves and speed up the game for the second edition, but it totally took me out of the experience,. I ended up selling the game and not been close-minded I know that we will get to that middle ground between apps and Board games, but in the meantime, my opinion is that FFG uses this to solve bad designed and over the top complex games and they are not focusing in creating smooth board game experiences.

I appreciate the objectiveness and honesty of this review. Too many reviews are just fanboys raving about their new favorite game.

Ummmm....soooo.. Damage damage is damage you suffer when getting damaged and fear damage is damage you suffer not when taking damaged damage but when taking fear damage. Thanks for clearing that up.😉

Darn. I didn't watch this before I ordered the soon to arrive game. I feel like I wasted my money. I watched 3 or 4 other reviews and based on those I bit the bullet.

Respect to NPI but I am having a great time playing this game. I think the fact that I have never played M.O.M. made the game enjoyable and memorable. App is amazing. This is a great game. Not perfect by any means but what game is? Game has not left my table all weekend. Cheers!

Thanks for interesting review! Yet I have two questions. Firstly what type of campaign did you use during your tests? Was it some kind of demo campaign or the one which will be available in final product? Secondly, does application allow to buy some equipment between the missions (similar to Decent app)?
@NoPunIncluded5 жыл бұрын
We played the full actual campaign and you can't buy anything between missions although there is a gradually increasing resource called Lore that automatically upgrades existing items once it reaches a certain threshold.

Thank you! It sounds like quite painful simplification comparing to Descent or Gloomhaven. :/

Every doubt I had is expressed in this video except the fact that you take random cards to pass any test - I think it's even worse then you explained it, the deck gets bigger and bigger and the control over the decks goes lower and lower with every new mission.

In a post Gloomhaven world a fantasy adventure campaign driven boardgame needs to really do either one of two things fantastically. Either it has to have virtually no set-up or tear-down time so you can play a game quickly without having to feel like you really need to dedicate the whole evening to playing 4 adventures, because we got all this shit out I'm not putting it away unless I'm sick of this game. OR it has to be mechanically extremely tight and hit its target theme perfectly. It sounds like this game doesn't really do either, shame.

I feel like the only person on the planet that dislikes Gloomhaven. I don't think it's a bad game, but It's not at all the hyper-engaging pseudo-RPG that people gush about.

I find it a more puzzle game than an engaging story. I like this game better... but ... as in this game and Gloomhaven... cards suck at replacing dice.
