Nora, re wrinkles: I've gone the other way. Because linen is the coolest fabric, I'm packing linen and embracing wrinkles. A friend told me that I can smooth out the worst wrinkels by spraying them with a spray bottle of water, smoothing them out, and letting them dry. It works!
@Pearl2608
@Pearl2608 11 ай бұрын
Yes! it totally works. You can get travel-size bottles of water mist meant to spray on your face, which work quite well for lightly dampening creased linen. Then just 'press out' the wrinkle between your palms.

Interesting! I'm embracing the slightly-wrinkled look with my linen shirt, but I generally prefer something that doesn't wrinkle at all so I don't even have to fuss with the water bottle treatment. But - there's no denying the comfort and temperature-regulating factors of linen.

I watched your fantastic video (informative and affirming) while eating my breakfast, and I should be off my computer and hanging my clean laundry, but this comment section is full of such good content. I am a middle-aged woman, and for the past 20 + years, I have traveled abroad about once a year and I've come to several conclusion about how to pack light and without regrets, Nora, your video has affirmed many of my own conclusions and doesn't conflict with any of them. The truth that rings the loudest for me and I find so rarely (if ever) addressed is, recognizing that you must feel comfortable in and about your travel clothes. The first time I went to Italy, I watched a ton of videos beforehand. Not just "what to wear" content but videos of real people walking around, hanging out, eating in restaurants and working in the places I was going to at the time of year I was going. I decided to not to buy anything new but to pack what I felt comfortable and presentable in and just make adjustments (go shopping) at my destination if necessary. I did buy a few items but not because I wasn't dressed "right" but because of the weather. On one occasion, I learned my windbreaker wasn't rainproof and bought a pretty umbrella. Another time, in Rome, it suddenly grew cold while we were out, so I bought a navy blue trench coat for 30 euro at an open air market. I will add one more item to this wall of text. Amen to shoes first! If your feet hurt, it ruins your vacation. If your shoes don't go with your clothes, it ruins your vacation. Just kidding. But remember, if you do find your shoes aren't right, it's a lot easier to find and buy comfortable and compatible clothes than it is to buy comfortable and compatible shoes. Last year, for our trip to Italy, these three pieces of comfortable and versatile footwear got top priority in my single piece of luggage: white Sketchers (tons of women in the Rome videos were wearing white athletic shoes), black Tevas, and Naturalizer flesh -tone ballet flats.

I pack only black or navy pants/skirts (maybe one white or beige if the weather warrants). Same with jackets/raincoats/sweaters. this leaves me free to indulge in colours with my tops. I recently found the perfect top for my next trip, Southeast Asia, which tends to be hot and humid- a light crinkle cotton, below-elbow length sleeves, round neck, floaty style. Washes and dries in a wink, no need to iron. It was on sale, so I bought it in white, navy, bright green, and hot pink. They all look just right with any random pant or skirt grabbed out of my bag, eyes closed. If I am ever reduced to just one clean top and one clean pant, I will be good to go. Even though the style is the same, the effect is very different, especially if I toss on a scarf-something you need anyway in case a holy place is on the day’s itinerary.

I can actually carry that in with me as long as I can’t see the shoe and it’s hidden with a close button or zip top. Love your videos! I am currently planning for a 3-month Europe trip and then travelling via trains from destination to destination in the late fall. My plan for my capsule wardrobe is 2 pairs of jeans or jeggings, 1 blue and 1 black. 3 long sleeved waffle tops in blue, black and either copper or grey. 1 short sleeved t-shirt in dark grey. 1 sleeveless thin black turtleneck for layering, 1 set of thin thermal underwear, 2 pairs of leotards for layering, 1 black sweatshirt without a hood, 4 thin and narrow cotton/linen scarves to add style, some protection if cold and windy, and to add a punch of colour. 1 black cotton/linen dress with long sleeves. 1 lightweight pair of pj's/loungewear. 6 pairs of Moreno wool socks and instead of bras and panties I opt for 5 black body shapers. In total this makes at least 13 outfits. If I buy a scarf or 2 while travelling my wardrobe choices expand even more. For footwear 1 pair of black Blundstone boots that's it. Oh and once I take out my travel outfit, sweatshirt, 1 of the pairs of jeans, 1 bodyshaper and 1 pair of socks, and one scarf, oh and my demin jacket, it all nicely packs into my 36L wheeled backpack using compressions sacks. Happy trials!! And happy holidays!

Hi Nora, As I'm watching this I'm doing a load of washing that I will hang out on the clothes line. I haven't owned a dryer for about 30 years and the Australian sun (with a touch of wind) will dry the thickest gear even in the middle of winter. The point is that everything can be air dried. You may just need to pick the time when you are in one place for more than one day to dry your jeans. The other thing you need to do, when you wash clothes in a basin, is wring them out in a towel to get rid of as much water as you can. They dry much faster.

Hi Nora! I appreciate your tips! I don’t travel for long periods of time but when I do travel, I’m bad about packing too much. Last year on a trip to California I used packing cubes for the first time. I’ll be going to Cali again in a month and this time I’m ditching the cubes. My clothes got very wrinkled and I overpacked because the “sneaky”😊 cubes allow you to pack twice as much. I really liked your suggestions of packing clothes in neutral colors so they all match and don’t pack the “but I might need it” item. You can improvise and if you’ve done your HW on the weather and what you’ll be doing, you’ll pack smarter. 🙏

Get a couple tanktops, one navy blazer, one scarf, one light foldable purse, the fanny pack I carry permanently during the trip. Save room for stuffs I bring back home that definitely always happens on every single trip abroad. BTW just came back from 3 weeks in Paris London and ibiza. The best travel packing is going with an almost empty carry-on to bring home more new stuffs. That's also help you to limit your stress thinking and listing. So much beautiful cheap stuff out there. Hey Nora, thanks again for one of your travel tip videos, I went on 21 day europe land and cruise earlier this year in May, and started packing 6 weeks prior (I was excited) but ended up with soooo much stuff, just in case, eg 3 pairs of shorts, which I never wore!! plus others, I ended up posting 6 kgs back to Australia in Rome... I'm going to China in 3 weeks, and have jotted down a very paired back list, and actually my list is very similar to your tips.....thankyou for cementing my view of useable clothes ... your tips on travel security and pickpockets was v helpful in europe

Kia ora Nora, I also find that silk is a great choice for practical, moisture-wicking, fast-drying clothing, especially as a base layer next to the skin but also simply as supremely comfortable clothing. And it's really not much more expensive than good merino. I also like possum and merino blend for when I really need warmth. It's warmer than cashmere because possum fur is hollow and doesn't freeze.

Love your channel. Awesome tips. The past year I have learned to pack only Black, White and Grey items. Including some stripes and polka dot for “fun”.. For Paris I packed one fashionable blazer (with subtle menswear stripes). it worked well with jeans, or over plain black knit dress. I packed a slim silver belt to dress it up some more, and went to a nicer restaurant in Paris. I literally wore this dress to the beach and a wedding! I use scarves for touches of color, as well as warmth. My wardrobe while traveling isn’t that different now then my normal outfits at home, but I do live in NYC.. 😅

I can’t say that I recommend the Jack Wolfskin rain jacket. I bought one in Germany 2 years ago and was disappointed to find out, in a pouring rainstorm, that the seams are not waterproof in the shoulders. I didn’t get completely soaked, just damp, but what a disappointment after spending about $200 on the thing. I bought a bottle of waterproofing spray from REI to hopefully make the coat waterproof, but haven’t sprayed it on yet. Hopefully, I can recover some of my investment.

Some thoughts from my two-week trip to the Baltics last month: 1. Dress like an onion. Start with short sleeves and add on layers. I didn't bring a raincoat but packed two nice disposable hooded rain covers and a travel umbrella. 2. Comfortable shoes are the main deal. I brought 2 pairs of black shoes, one not as comfortable as I thought, but the second pair were great. 3. I brought three pairs of black pants, very different styles. My ten tops were a nice variety that went with black. No dresses, but two dressier tops. Two necklaces and two scarfs. It worked. 4. I used the hotel laundry service for a few tops. It was a bit disappointing as they used hot water and both tops shrunk a tad. They were older tops so that was ok, but beware.
@NoraDunn

Dress like an onion - ha ha! Great analogy (and advice)! Actually it's all great advice = fantastic tips all around. I avoid hotel laundry like the plague; mostly because I tend to travel with delicate clothes like merino wool and I don't trust anybody else to wash it on the right temp / with the right detergent / not dry it / etc. Also, hotel laundry is extortionate!

make a quick calculation too. How many days for how many outfits you will need to be able to put together. Pack fewer socks than you think you need. Unless you sweat acid, you can absolutely use the same socks for more than one day. You can also give them a quick wash by hand. Take a couple of things you can wear to a nice restaurant or an evening out. One or two button up shirts or blouses that can be up and down-dressed easily will cover a lot of these events. A nice thin and flowy merino/silk jumper is suitable for everything. My go to in Summer is a white and a light blue linen shirt. They look great with jeans, shorts and tailored trousers alike. During the day, these trousers and a t-shirt look equally nice. Also the first thing I unpack at the destination are the wrinkle prone items. Hang them immediately. You can also hang them in the bathroom while taking a shower. The heat and steam will help immensely.

All my "just in case" have to do with medical issues and severe allergies, so I bring a darn pharmacy and my toiletries are all hypoallergenic so never sure if I'd find them at location. Then there's things like a q-tip, a nail file, a bandaid, that I could get in most places bit hate the thought of running to the store every time I need a whatsit, rather than use that time to sightsee. And, with that, the over packing spirals 😂

Such a great point about the grey areas of what constitutes a just-in-case item and what is going down the rabbit hole of overpacking! I'm with you on things like nail files and bandaids. I think where it can get out of control is with clothing items, which inherently take up a lot of space and if you don't actually need/wear them, it's a waste.

However, they have some other soft-sided wheeled carry on options that I'm curious about too. On the whole they make amazing stuff, so from a quality standpoint you can't go wrong with them. You're right about the irons being available at most hotels. When traveling for months at a time and renting apartments, not always.

Do you have any recommendations on a rain jacket other than Jack Wolf? They are out of stock even on Amazon and that grape leaf rain jacket looks so good😢

I’m curious if you’ve tried any of the merino wool shoes? I hate wearing socks, so this sounds like a good sort to try.

I just got a pair of Merinos slip ons. I’ve only worn them for 2 days, but my first impression is great. I’m wearing them without socks and they’re very comfortable. I got dark purple, as it was on sale and is my favorite color.

Hi Nora. I've watched a bunch of your videos and enjoyed them, but more importantly learned things, used companies and products you suggested. I've tried to find a way to email you, but this will have to do. I hope you see this. I left 4 months ago to travel the world on a motorcycle. There's an upcoming issue that does not seem to get talked about much. That's health insurance. I can get it now, as I'm still covered under my OHIP plan. But what does a person do after that? I'm not planning on returning to Canada. I'll not be able to get any health coverage. Could you please cover this topic - I promise, if you do, I'll make sure you get compensated. Thanks. Keep up the good work!

Hi Mike, Great question! For long-term travelers (especially Canadians without provincial coverage after an extended absence), expat insurance - aka international health plans - are the way to go. Here's an article I wrote about it: www.theprofessionalhobo.com/expat-insurance-travel-insurance-for-full-time-and-long-term-travelers/ But while you're at it, you might want to get a quote from Safety Wing. Their "nomad" coverage acts like travel insurance, but doesn't require OHIP like most travel insurance policies do. More info on that here: www.theprofessionalhobo.com/best-travel-medical-insurance/ PS - My email address is listed on the About tab here on my KZbin channel :-)
