In 2016, my mother, at age 84, was traveling solo in her native Japan. On a train trip, when she disembarked at her destinationn, she accidentally left her CHANEL purse with EVERYTHING in it including all her passport, jewelry, cash, etc. on the train. After she realized what she had done, she reached out to the station manager for help. Turns out a man on the train who found her purse took it to the station manager of the next stop. My mom was accompanied to the next stop by the station manager and they reunited her with her purse. Japan, what country!

That's amazing. But when I was traveling in Japan and used cash, I was shortchanged twice. I remember the way one lady looked at me as she handed me my change. It was a kind of "I wonder if she's going to realize look." I was with a Japanese friend who helped solve the issue.

If you are a single traveler, make sure you aren't carrying more than you can handle easily so you can remain alert to your surroundings. If you are juggling with luggage, you become a prime candidate for pick pocketers because they can see how distracted you are. If you are traveling with a partner, make sure you designate roles before you go out - for example, one is the person handling the money for all purchases and one is the lookout - to make sure no one is getting too interested.

On May 18 this year , I was in Athens , Greece. I was walking with my friend from Syntagma Square to the National Archeology Museum which is about a 25 minutes walk, We had a map which we consulted in public which is NOT to be done but we did it ! I had a backpack into which I placed my cross body purse for convenience. Apparently, the strap for the purse was sticking out of the backpack zipper but not really sure . All of a sudden a women came screaming at me with my purse in her hand . She was yelling to KEEP YOUR THINGS IN FRONT OF YOU !!! She apparently witnessed a young women take my purse out of the backpack and she grabbed it back from her and gave it to me. She said that these people dress and act like tourists to get close to them . She said that she is angry that her city gets a bad reputation from this . She was very upset but saved my day ! As I write this , I start to question whether she was part of something else but I don’t believe so as I did not lose anything and she actually had my purse which she gave back to me. It was very upsetting but I felt fortunate to say the least and I will always keep my valuables in front of me from now on !! Another point …..we had just come from the Greek Islands which seem very safe and our guard was really down as we walked around in the huge and busy streets of Athens .

Many years ago, when my husband and we’re in New York, he experienced a pickpocket attempt when going to buy some cheap theatre tickets. He said that he suddenly sensed that two guys were trying to double team him so he grabbed the guy behind him and threw him into the guy in front. The guys took off and the crowd around him applauded. He did not tell me about this until a few days later because he was worried about how I might react. I was very proud of him.

I had a relative who was traveling on a busy car on the Paris Metro, when a group of gypsy kids surrounded her, began yelling and jostling. Because she was fluent in French, she could tell that the kids weren’t really saying anything and something was up. She checked for her wallet as the doors opened at the next stop, realized she had been pickpocketed and began chasing the kids. She caught the youngest one and screamed loudly to the oldest who had the wallet, “my wallet, or I break your brothers arm!” The teenage leader of these juvenile criminals stopped and slowly came back and returned the wallet.

Love your comment about being a little trusting of people who are genuinely trying to help you. The best advice I've seen is to have absolutely nothing in your pockets. By using a money belt and secure bags, if you feel someone's fingers in your pockets you can just laugh about it and have a story to tell with nothing actually having been taken. I've been pickpocketed twice. Once on a streetcar in Quito, Ecuador (took my compact camera) and at a disco club in Phuket, Thailand (my wallet with only my drivers license). During both of these pickpockets, I almost sensed it was going to happen since I was in a crowded space. My biggest mistake was that I kept patting the area where I kept the items that eventually got stolen.

My daughter and I went for gelati in Florence. A large group of children came in to the shop while we were standing at the counter ordering. The woman working there pointed to the kids and told us (hand signals) to hold tight to our purses, which we did. I am very thankful to her! The kids caused a commotion and were very distracting and crowded around and pressed on us . Luckily I was aware of the danger of opening a purse in public, and had a small amount of cash in a tight pocket in my pants, which allowed us to buy the delicious gelati without a hitch. (Also had an anti theft purse..).

About seven years ago, I was in Florence. Our trip was almost over as we were to fly out of Milan the next day. My friend decided that he needed some more Euros and I thought, well, I might as well get some too. We went up to a money exchange kiosk and inquired as to what the exchange rate was. It was outrageous so we declined. (I put my cash into my right front pocket of my jeans!). Unbeknownst to us/me, we were being watched by the pickpockets. About five minutes later I was bumped in front and behind and got a "pardon" from one of them. I was tired as we had partied it up pretty good the night before and it didn't occur to me until a few moments later, but yes, I was a victim! Normally I would never keep that much cash in one pocket, but I let my guard down and was out of $400! Now I am somewhat paranoid of busy touristy areas...

We are vigilant and also friendly - looking right at everyone so they know we are not distracted and also nodding or greeting them. This has served us well, even in difficult situations. For example, coming up on an escalator out of the dark subway in Rome into the dazzling sunlight, everyone is momentarily blinded. There was a group of men standing on both sides at the top of the escalator and if you made it past them, there was a brilliant slight of hand artist. We watched him speak rapidly in Italian as he asked to see a well-dressed man's watch to check the time. grabbing his wrist with one hand and exploring all his pockets in seconds with the other hand.

Los Ramblas in Barcelona was one of the most stressful holidays I ever had. I watched a season of Scam City before going and it just made me over paranoid. I had my back pack padlocked and made sure to never stop at the one person shows (eg, person sprayed in gold paint posing as a statue) on Los Ramblas, as they said that is where the pick pocketers target (at the time Barcelona was listed as the number one place world wide to get pick pocketed). If anyone walked too close behind me, I'd swing around and turn and glare at the them. Whilst I appreciate the show, it made me so over paranoid that I remember regularly feeling stressed.

Many years ago, as a young person on my first trip out shopping as a brand new Peace Corps volunteer [and a brand new foreign traveler], I was on a crowded "guagua" or small public van-bus. The guy seated next to me was unbelievably obtrusive and obnoxious with his newspaper; no one else even seemed to notice, and I was too young and naive to even consider what might be up. But when I got off at my stop and tried to buy something, my 75 pesos [a lot of money then, and it was all that I had!] was gone from my front left pants pocket. Now I am planning a possible trip abroad again, my first in a very long time, and I am watching these types of videos in order to try to be more sensible and safe about my practices this time! I remember putting the $ in my right pocket and going out to the curb to catch my bus. As I was going up the second step in the bus I put my hand in my right pocket to pay the driver and felt the hand of the man behind me under mine! I was about to say no thanks when he hugged me anyway. I kept a tight hold on my crossbody bag with my arm blocking the zip, just in case. One other thing which isn't pickpocketing but just a warning. I got into my car one day and a man came over and told me that my left front tyre looked a bit deflated. I thanked him and he then asked if I had any spare change. I was so grateful for his warning about my tyre that I gave him what little I had. When I checked my tyres at a petrol station shortly afterwards there was nothing wrong with any of my tyres. These guys have really perfected their techniques but lesson learned.

My suggestion is to use a shoelace to tie the pocket zippers together and loop it through the ring the strap is on or get a small retractable luggage lock. You want to be sure there is no slack so the zippers can still be opened. If using a shoelace, don't use a knot such as for shoes. That can easily be untied.

Some are as small as lip balm while others can hold a small tablet. I was going to buy my winter coat when I was in my trip, as a material souvenir/reminder of my trip. The Scottee was very pricy, the one I chose was about 175$, yet I feel it is a good investment of my money; they have products/clothing that can run as high as 250-300$. I looked at them all and made the best choice for my needs. There is no need to buy RFID blocking clothing. There are many RFDI card options available inexpensively and you can place one in your pockets or, as I do, tuck one in with every card carrier - including my phone wallet.

Material: the description calls it a hoodie and a sweatshirt. No, it is a delightful water resistant fabric on the outside, soft inside. The sleeves even have thumb holes for a snug fit/cold weather. The exterior zipper goes all the way up to the crest of the hood - allowing it to fit any neck and head size. Color me impressed!

At the same time I don't want to wear pocketed safari/hiking clothes in European urban areas that scream tourist!!!. The idea is for pickpockets to target someone else and not you.

A relative who travels a lot has a very light weight Eagle Creek passport holder with several pockets that is made out of a similar material to lingerie for thinness and comfort. With a neck loop, it goes around the neck under the shirt and is both unobtrusive, and would be very difficult for any pickpocket to get out, unless he essentially knocked down and was on top of the victim. These neck strap security wallets seem like they would be as effective against pickpockets as a money belt, and seem that they would be a bit less embarrassing to access than having to reach down one’s pants. They come in beige, and in black, which is a reasonable enough look for a man to wear.
@NoraDunn

I traveled for years with a neck strap security wallet for my passport etc. The challenge is that as a woman it affects what I can wear on travel days; it must be something loose-fitting enough to mask the fact that I have something under my clothes. But you're absolutely right - for ease of access on travel days, it's much easier to pull out a neck wallet, than reach into one's pants to access a waist belt!

Im grew up in nyc, lived or traveled for long periods of time in paris, berlin, montreal and now live in mex city. Always used public transport. NEVER put ANYTHING in your pocket...just common sense...for ex: here in mex city everyone keeps their bag in front at all times when on public transport. I keep a tsa lock on my bag if i feel an area is esp suspect. If you are with someone else always have that person behind you watching when u use an atm,,, as well,,, use BANK ONLY atms in grocery stores as thieves normally do not suspect others using an atm at a grocery store ...they are there just to get groceries so after using the atm walk around the store a bit. Also only use bank atms on a work day when a bank would be open. This way if something happens and you lose card in the machine or are short changed you can take your receipt and go into the bank to fix the issue.

I have about 10 experiences with pickpockets in Europe. Rarely are they sketchy looking young guys. They are often women or girls, or older men. Some look like students, tourists (complete with map and sun hat), or a rich beach bum. When caught, they always make a big deal about being innocent, and suggest you are crazy. Also, it's not late at night in a dark alley - in broad daylight. If you push them too hard, they might threaten a little violence, so just get out of there. With PacSafe, they are not getting in. But there are easy tricks too.

The key to outsmarting pick pockets is to just be aware and observe normal precautions (don't show your money in public, don't look like you have a lot of money on you -- this means don't wear a ton of jewelery). Don't accept help from strangers even if it is a genuine offer to help you with your bags or whatever... and to that note -- don't fall for the "bird poop" or "stain" trick that pickpockets use). Someone tried that on me and I told them I was going to change my clothes later anyway but thank you and kept walking (there was no bird poop obviously and I knew it was a trick).

I was at a ticket machine at the NYC metro and someone offered to help a friend that was also getting a ticket. She agreed and they did help with the ticket and then when they were done they asked for payment for the help. Same type of thing happened on Mars Hill when A man walked up to my friend who was using an actual camera and asked if she would like a picture with all of us in it. She agreed. He took the picture and gave back the camera and asked for payment for taking the picture. Certainly you don’t have to do what they ask and certainly I wouldn’t hand anything to a stranger. they didn’t take anything without consent and a small payment request could be justified. just be aware that not everyone is just being a kind soul when they offer to help.

Me and my partner were on the underground in our city (Milan, Italy) and I saw three girls surrounding my partner, ready to steal his wallet. I started looking at them, after which, they just went away very quickly. Another time, a girl was waiting for a taxi but, when her turn came, she moved to the end of the queue (very strange.. ). Still in Milan, I was waiting for the metro and a girl pushed me intentionally (and there was plenty of space...). Just be careful when someone pushes you or comes too close for no reason. Another MUST: never leave your bag on the seat behind you while you're eating out, especially if you are in a crowded place, ALWAYS leave it in full sight, better if you have one of those small bags worn across your body.

Groups of child pickpockets led by an adult act like they are engaging in horseplay in the thin aisle of a food market. The adult makes a quick blocking move with the cart (trolley) or their body. don't assume there is only one adult. One frolicking child appears to go off balance and groin punches the intended victim as if catching their fall. Immediately all the others (sometimes 3 of the four) send all hands forward into pockets seeking whatever will come with them. It's happened to me more than once. They never got anything because I saw it coming. I applied a quick 180 degree spin while swiping my hands across my pants pocket openings to break their path of access. This has happened with as many as 5 kids and an adult. Sometimes they plan pass-offs. They were kids to they were unskilled and telegraphing their intent. They all immediately clustered around the now exiting adult going out of sight. I've even surprised the adult later berating them for failing. This was in the USA.

The #1 reason why tourists are targeted is seldom mentioned. It's because they're only there for a short time. They will not be around for any legal proceedings to identify anyone or anything connected to the crime. A tourist who has been pickpocketed will (maybe) file a police report, but will be mostly focused on replacing whatever was lost, freezing their credit cards IF they can, and then getting on to their next destination.

Let me tell you about the time the most stealthy, ingenuous, subtle and experienced pickpocket I ever ran into (I've been robbed a lot) nicked my bag on a bus. I was in university still and I believe it was finals season. I was a sleep-deprived wreck. I was on my way home after handing in a paper and not sleeping for what felt like a week. It wasn't rush hour, but the bus was packed nonetheless, with nowhere to sit. I stood there and leaned against the sliding door. Obviously I fell asleep. How can someone fall asleep while standing you ask? Well, I had by then mastered the art of doing so in any position imaginable on my bus trips to and from home. At one point, the bus hit a pot hole or a speed bump and jolted me awake. I leaned back against the door and acted like nothing happened, being the self-conscious introvert I still am. A moment later though, I felt strange, like I was missing something. I looked around and my messenger bag, which only minutes prior was hanging next to my right thigh, from my LEFT shoulder, was nowhere to be seen. This fine gentleman (or lady?) somehow managed to cut the 5 cm strap, slide it behind my back and over my torso, noiselessly grabbed the 30x20x10 cm bag, without waking me, and walked away unseen in a bus full of people. To this day, I am in awe of their skill and finesse and I can't tell you how long I've dumbfoundedly ruminated over the question, HOW DID THEY DO IT?!!!!

I'm referring to the amazing experience of being a traveler vs a tourist. Huge difference. One time I slept early tired from early flight & woke up around 2:00 AM very hungry, I walked til the next block where there"s a Family Mart (convenience store) bought food, they even re-heat in microwave oven, and drinks, returned back to the hotel safely. BUT I never do this in Europe. I got stock supplies from the supermarket so after being tired roaming around, I stay put in my room at night and there's no need to go out just to eat or buy food. They were so skilled at this that although I stood there watching I didn’t see the switch. They were also cheeky enough to put their hand out for a tip!

In Europe it is difficult not to get pick pocketed or robbed. Most tourist do. I don't believe 16% is accurate. My approach is to dress like a poor person who could be a robber or a pickpocket. They always leave me alone. Also I am dark brown that helps a lot.

Dressing like a poor person is smart because it gives robbers the idea that you don't have anything of value on you worth messing with you for. It's like millionaires who drive old ugly cars so ppl won't know they have wealth.

@@briannab5296 They usually think I am a pickpocket or thief. I notice people check their belongings near me. 😆 🤣

Several years ago while in Rome with a group, I saw a woman who was "carrying a baby in a sling on one arm." It was a doll, not a real baby, and it was hiding the fact that her hand underneath was free. She was heading for an unaware man in the group so I shouted out his name before he was robbed, sending the woman running away.

How about using chain wallets? It is obvious you have a wallet, but they would have to pull you to get it?

Living in NYC in 1976. Riding my motorcycle, on a lovely, summer day in wonderful Manhattan. Stopped at a light. Young woman and man get into a lovers quarrel. Light changes and off I go to the ice cream shop. Order my sundae, no wallet. Paid with my roll of parking meter quarters. Cop said something about honor among thieves and that I'd get my wallet back, I didn't think so, but I was polite. Sure enough, a week later it showed up minus cash and cards. In San Francisco a decade later, picked again (2 times in a decade, not bad) but got nothing back. San Fran pickers have no honor.

@@NoraDunn oh, forgot that. The cop told me the pickers take what they want, then toss it in a nearby mailbox. Usually, there’s something in the wallet with an address.
