Randy's chords just set the scene beautifully. I like the little changes Norah puts in. This song fits her like a glove. Beautiful.

Sadly this song has more relevance now than when it was written years ago. We have deteriorated so much in our relationships ____ it's hard to believe .

There is another song, different tune but same sentiment, yet beautiful and melancholy, too. I think a Bacharach/David composition called The Windows of the World (I think it's going to rain today). Dionne Warwick sings a wonderful version. Neil Diamond does my fave cover of this gorgeous, sad song.

Do you think this song is about betrayal by friend/loved one? The bridge, unexpectedly, says, "Lonely, lonely , Tin can at my feet, Think I'll kick it down the street, That's the way to treat a friend." The narrator was betrayed, it seems, and this song is coping with the betrayal.

Have you ever heard David Gray's version? I have to say his is my favorite. Norah Jones and David Gray are my favorite female and male singers respectively, so it's a tough call.
These lyrics are from the Bette Midler rendition of the song (repeated verse). I have been listening to multiple versions, having recently learned the history of this song, and recognized her cover just by the repeated verse and the added word "so" between "lonely...lonely " which is not in the original lyrics by Newman.

Most people fail to understand the irony in this song They take it literally That is a mistake It's about our approach to the poor which Is condescending at best! The conversation in the song is between two homeless people who are tired of those who would set them straight: Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles! Human kindness is overflowing because it's not! That is irony And that is why the homeless response is a non sequitur I think it's going to rain today In other words, nothing changes, life goes on the same
