I also made the crazy decision and bought the Norah Jones Ultra tapes from AP over a year ago. It took me quite a while to actually order them, as it seemed liked rather alot of money (which it most definitely is!) I'm glad I bought them though. With a decent machine to play them on there is no contest between this and various analogue and digital copies that I have. The whole recording is so rich with much more dynamics in her voice and deep detail and air around the instruments. Also, there is virtually no noticeable tape hiss, this is helped because they are recorded in IEC equalisation and not NAB. The recorings are totally dropout free for me. Owning a reel to reel and playing tapes on it is a lot more hassle than digital or even vinyl but it is so much more rewarding with the right tapes, and these sound fantastic!

I took the 20th box set release on vinyl, and I’m very happy with that. It’s a great edition and I can appreciate an huge different with the classic records version that I also have. I just can imagine your emotion in front of this pure analogue edition. If I had a tape machine, I’d run to buy it, as well as I run to buy the ticket for her show in Lucca this summer!!!😍

By the way, my wife and I used to live in Sicily from 1987 to 1990 .. we lived just outside of Catania (Motta) when I was stationed there while serving in the US Navy.. I sure loved my three years in Sicily. It was amazing. We lived in a small apartment on a working Vineyard and every year I would help harvest grapes and walk around in circles. The SM 900 mastering tape is thicker than a LPR 90. 30 minutes runtime vs 45 minutes. Guido mentioned the thicker tape is more durable and less print through and can record a louder signal on the tape. 32 minutes is really close to using 1 tape.

Very nice 2021 reissue. I remember hearing Norah Jones first time in 2003, when I first purchased my second SACD player. Track "Come Away With Me" was on SACD sampler that came with it. I ended up buying right away her SACD album alone with Pink Floyd and Elton John... I honestly believe that if every SACD player today came along with a SACD sampler, demand and popularity of this format would be way higher. I was fascinated with SACD back then. I still am. Of course I do own Reel-to-reel but I only use it to record mixtapes of my favorite record (vinyl) tracks that I just can't find in a better digital format. I am sure you own Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me" on SACD. Have you tried recording it onto Reel-to-reel and comparing it to a master tape copy you have received? I'm jealous and I hate you. Cheers!
@anadialog

Hi there, if you check my channel you will see that SACD is the only format I don’t cover. Why? Because I think it is terrible. I have several SACD and an Ausiocom signature modified Oppo 1005D so I know what they sound like but compared for example to a DVD-Audio they just sound terrible. Native DSD is instead very high quality in most cases.
@piotreknyc
@piotreknyc Жыл бұрын
Now that's a bold statement, calling SACD a horrible format, considering that at least its Standard CD layer in most cases sounds like a very nicely mastered AAD compact disc from the 80s and the SACD layer provides better dynamic range, clearer, warmer and better filtered sound (yes, very hard to hear it, you must focus on individual tracks to spot it) no horrible compression, which is clearly present on DVD-Audio discs. Now that would be very hypocritical, considering how much you've praised AAD discs in the past and complained about dynamic range compression where I agreed with you 100%. Let's just not insult SACD saying it sounds terrible and please, if you have to, just call it no better than a standard CD. But to defense of Norah Jones' album released on CD and SACD by Blue Note, in both cases it sounds brilliant. One of those cases that if you just want to enjoy it in Stereo without Multi-ch experience provided by SACD, standard Blue Note CD still impresses. @@anadialog
@anadialog
@anadialog Жыл бұрын
@@piotreknyc it’s terrible because most of them sound terrible. When you find a good one, which once again it is rare in my experience, then it is sublime. So my statement is surely an hyperbole, terrible in the sense that it should be extremely good and it is like or worse in some cases than a CD. For those reasons it is a failed format and considering the high price tag it is even more terrible. I think you understand better what I am talking about. Finally, as already mentioned DSD is a great format on its own BUT, SACD as DSD as any other format it really shines when mastered well. I have a Chesky SACD I adore but that does not change my mind on the overall result while DVD-Audio as of today IMHO IS the best sounding high-res digital format available. The cure, respect and quality of the transfers and mastering is simply stellar. Very little of no compression. Clearly I am not talking about the multichannel or other compressed formats on the disc BUT EXCLUSIVELY of the linear PCM stereo track (LPCM).
@piotreknyc
@piotreknyc Жыл бұрын
I do understand your point of view. Absolutely, considering the price of equipment just to hear marginal improvement, it is a failed format. But so is DVD-Audio. I have started my adventure over 20 years ago with both SACD and DVD-Audio. The latter one just never sounded good to me. It was just loud. But so was a selection on this format. Imagine Linkin Park or Metallica on SACD? It would melt the disc. I've researched many music formats, tried to be objective as possible, and I do say a standard CD is the best format any money can buy today vs sound quality (preferably original release without dynamic range compression), especially on a used market. SACD and DVD-Audio are far behind. Now, I love finding SACDs once in a while, mixed in used CD section for couple of bucks. In US, no such luck in Europe. But that's another story. I'd love to continue this conversation, but I think I better bother you by commenting under a video more related to the topic. Talk to you soon! @@anadialog

When you mentioned wanting to be closer to the original material, did you mean in terms of physical format or sound quality? You mentioned that you already obtained ultra-high-definition versions of this album, including Direct Stream Digital (DSD). The question is, how faithful to the original tape can you expect to get by spending over 400 USD on a tape whose generation copy is unknown? Wouldn't a direct conversion from the original first-generation master tape to a very high bitrate DSD provide better results?
@anadialog

Good questions. Well. We do know the tape generation, it's the third: original master>working copy>consumer copy. I was talking in the sense of sound quality. I love DSD as high-res PCM but it just doesn't deliver. The quality of analog tape, is just more engaging. If you try with a quality set-up it is clear.

I have to make an educated guess, but I think CD & digital download (high res *might* be better). There are so many steps in producing an LP (lacquer master to mother to stamper to a record) that the sound is pretty much guaranteed to change noticeably from the original. Throughout the production chain, there are variables in various metal and plastic materials & the way in which they are handled. Changes will be produced in the digital process also, but these will be more controllable.

WOMAN, not girl. There are some voices that just resonate with our soul. Vibrations of energy (that is what voice and music is) that feel inviting and pleasurable, both to our brains but also on a much more esoteric, intangible and maybe undefinable level. In my opinion Digital, no matter how "hiRes" it is, detracts from this connection.

I made sure all peaks had enough headroom. That is the important. Audacity is just an interface, the important is the soundcard/converter, which I will be upgrading soon.

@@anadialog Hello. Everything is fine. But even so I humbly recommend that you test recording at -5db peak in the audacity VU without any kind of leveling other than its own volume control. I think that the dynamic range in high resolution is so large that these -5db will not make any difference to it and that in practice the program records better if left away from these 0db peaks.

Hi Guido. There should be laws against customs and taxes on music. Music is art and should be able to travel around the world without the vultures jumping it. (At least the kind of music that can be considered art - Not including stupid pop crap of course). If they are that greedy they could instead raise customs and taxes on low end aftermarket crap like most present turntables and tape machines in the consumer class. They might even be able to push the price on junk so high that consumers who doesn't know any better begin to think twice before they let themselves get scammed. High taxes and customs on junk and low on quality gear. Now that would make sense - Even when it comes to environmental matters. But of course we can't expect them to think that far. Awesome purchase Mate. Envious here. How much for a copy? I could avoid customs, and you could get back what the vultures drained you for. (Just kidding of course). Great video. All the best from Denmark.

Yes, from what I understood the copy I am holding comes from a working copy, which comes from the original master. But that is normal. Direct copies can maybe take place with new recordings.

Not my kind of music, but I guess if you just want to relax and have wallpaper music to unwind to, then it suits the bill. Find it incredible that they cost so much, and here's me baulking at spending a tenth of that on new vinyl 🤣. But hey, if it floats your boat - go for it.

Same herre! The generation of this tape is a complete mystery. It could be a never-ending chain of copies upon copies upon copies... It's anyone's guess! Personally, I believe the desire to buy it might be driven more by passion than reason. I mean, wouldn't a high-resolution DSD copy derived directly from the first-generation tape, with all the damages accumulated over these past 20 years meticulously corrected, not only sound better but also be more faithful to the original recording from two decades ago? Just a thought.

I sort of get what you paid for jazz at the pawnshop, I love that album. It is one the greatest live recordings but this seems to be a stretch. Please don't confuse this I have lots of love for you and your channel, you have seemed to fall down the old man audiophile rabbit hole. Please climb out and put the money in an IRA or other investment. The 9inch kuzma , the cd player, when you already had excellent sources, you have/had a Holo audio dac and a great deck. @@anadialog I know analog productions many many years now and I have purchased some products, also making experience with customs etc., Dear Guido, it's not funny, you are totally right , 🤣, but I have the impression that quality is not as good as at the beginning, I have recently sent back a couple of vinyls because of their bad pressing quality , I doubt that newer releases are still completely analog, you have made a video on that with speakers corner Kai Seemann, what is valid for vinyl is valid for tapes, if there's a digital step in the production of a new release, why not buying a very good digital source and put it on tape yourself? I think it's worse to discuss this now and in the future, maybe on your channel, take care Guido, best
