Look at the edge of the quarter. if you see a copper ring, it's a clad quarter.
@fauxque50577 ай бұрын
Your quarter is easy to tell of its silver. First the edge will be solid silver colored. The clad quarter will be a sandwhich. Copper in the center betwern two silver halves. The easy way to tell is drop it on the counter. If it rings out its silver. If it's a dull thud its clad. And as others have said, never polish coins. If it was silver and was worth 8 grand, it wouldn't be after you cleaned it

An easier way to see if that quarter is silver or not is to look at the edge of the coin if you see a copper ring in the center of the edge of the coin it is not silver. And I agree cleaning any coin past just using water will lessen the value greatly.

Hi Nora. I'm a coin collector so, 1965 to 1967 quarter's had no mint mark because the US mint was trying to discourage collectors not to hold them until the mint caught up making coins. They were a little behind production. If it's silver you have a small gold mine.
@ShroomDay01177 ай бұрын
Rusty you forgot to mention that she destroyed the numismatic value as soon as she put that polish on it. @Nora, if you ever think a coin might be valuable, never clean it. Show it to someone with some knowledge and ask them how to handle it. Two small helpful tips, One is never put an old copper coin dug from the ground under water. You can wipe it gently with a toothbrush but beyond that, dont run it under water. And for silver coins, you CAN run those under water but NEVER NEVER rub on it. As soon as you start rubbing on an old silver coin, each stroke depreciates the value. And by the time you're done polishing it, you got shiny🐩💩 left. The value is all gone. I hope that helps. With all that said, I've always enjoyed watching your videos. Thank you for the endless hours of entertainment. 🥰

@ShroomDay01177 ай бұрын
@@Rodbar22 Did you actually read my comment or just glance at it and see something completely different other than what I wrote? Because I'm pretty sure thats what I was getting at. Not to mention , nobody can "restore" a coin. You cant add metal to fill scratches or revert corrosion into solid copper again. Now that I got that straightened out, if someone finds an old coin and decides they want to clean it and add it to their collection, who are we to tell them what to do or what not to do with their coin. There's nothing wrong with cleaning a coin as long as they dont try and represent it as something its not.

Or I could sew u some arm band pouches to put smaller items in so your hands are more free to move about. U almost need a second nate with you to film for you. U could try velcro straps that adjust to try to keep it on or u may have to rig up a dash phone holder like one with the magnetic ball on it to keep screen secure. Cool finds woman!! Let me know I will sew u up something for your hunting!!

Detectors like the one you used are easier to handle when only the shaft and coil are submerged. Of course the control head can too which is great when you're in hunting in say 4-5' of water. Otherwise they are cumbersome fully submerged and held nearly horizontal while sweeping the coil. Great finds!

What all these comments talking about not cleaning coins aren't being explicit about is 'if it's a valuable coin', A coin coming out of the ground isn't going to have much value due to environmental damage anyway, unless it's a gold coin that is less likely to have environmental damage. I can't stand hearing people say 'Never do this or do that.' I clean my coins before I put them in a book, because I want them to look nice. Most seasoned detectorist would do the same thing. I don't think many coin dealers are detectorist.

Hey Nora! The quarter is a 40% silver reg. coin. Condition is everything. Never polish the coins cuz it kills any collectibility value. Sorry. BUT, If you’ve got a 1965 quarter that weighs more than 6 grams, it’s worth getting inspected in-hand by a coin certification firm that encapsulates coins in plastic slabs.

I use the Deus 2 with the shorter dive shaft and bone conductor headphones. The control module has a slightly tighter fit on the dive shaft than the standard shaft. I would avoid handling the detector by the control module under water, also I secure the cable from the bone conductor headphones to the handle of the shaft with the provided velcro strips to prevent it from dislodging the control module from the shaft mount. The Deus 2 is a great machine - Enjoy!

I'm not a collector but back before I lost it the edge of my 1940-something silver quarter looked different than new quarters. New ones had a dark line on that thin edge and the silver was only the silver color. Also a silver quarter has a distinct sound when dropped on a table if you drop it,then drop a non-silver one you can surely hear a difference.

Hey Nora.... conventional wisdom among numismatists is to not polish your coins, but the kid in me always likes them shiny. Your coin, your choice. 🙂 Look along the 'reeded' edge of your quarter, if some orange/pink shows through it is a copper-nickel quarter worth around $9 in the best of best condition. If it is silver only on the edge you've got a good one.

In 1965 they started using copper sandwiched between the silver layers, check the side edge of the quarter, it should show a thin line of copper. Yet, (if I'm not mistaking) some of the 1965's were still full silver. 1964 were the last of the true silver coin's, dime's, quarter's and fifty cent piece's. 💰

I thought I recognized the location as soon as you started walking the trail. My first thought when you picked up that one coin was how thick it is. The 1965 quarter is a cool find. I was 5 when it came out. Good to see Kairo. Looks like he enjoyed the hike. As for the detector screen...you might try wedging something small, like a toothpick, in the groove once the screen is in place. If you really want to get fancy you can drill a small hole and tap threads into it so you can use a small Allen Head set screw to secure it. That way you can lock it down when you use it and back the set screw out a bit so you can still take the screen off when you want. Thanks for sharing this adventure.

If that was a rare minted quarter, cleaning it looses all of its numismatic (collectible) value, unless you were selling it as scrap silver. Like your own research discovered, it is not silver though. If you are interested in the future, when you find coins, do not clean them until you are sure they have no value except face value. If you want to check if something is silver or gold and can't find identifying marks, first step is to use a magnet. All precious metals are non-ferrous and shouldn't be magnetic. I hope this helps. Great video!

Don't forget, like with the Excalibur, the sound of the target is important like the ID number. The sound can sometimes tell you the difference between a gold ring and a bit of tinfoil that will show the same number. Learned that on Minelab and XP products both. That is why headphones are actually pretty important. Especially if it is an area where you don't want to dig a lot of trash or you don't have a lot of time. I see you already knew this but a lot of people do not pay enough attention to the sound they hear. The Excalibur helped you a ton with this, I bet. That quarter is clad. Also, had it been a silver mistake you took a quarter off its value by cleaning it. Never clean a coin you believe might be, or is, valuable. Please, Nora. The ring has about $300 worth of gold in it.

The pound coin can be 'paid' into a bank account or post office where you will get one pound transferred or exchanged into your account for you to spend. I believe there was around 20million of these one pound coins unaccounted for and many still are. We detectorists find these everywhere we dig, especially beaches in the UK and we cash them in.
