Considering all the base building lessons learned in Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, and everything that moders fixed with base building, the outpost building in Starfield feels like an intentional FU. The person in charge of this mechanic 100% deserves a beating, but also, perhaps, some small kudos for the ability to open doors in build mode, and place dropped inventory items with some degree of percision.

Definitely made by two different people and only one of them seems to have played FO4 and 76.

If you weren't aware yet, you can make a hab float in midair without a support by connecting a hab to the bottom floor of a two story square hab, placing a second hab on top, then deleting the first hab. I was able to use this to make a "floating" glass hydroponics hab connect between two two story square habs, effectively making a "bridge" you can walk across but also under.

yeah i was thinking of doing the same, except have the floating hab over some of the storage crates, to make it look a bit ramshakle

After 250 hours of wonderful yet unfortunately bugged play (no npcs in enemy ships in space or on ground for over 2 weeks...) I've just started building bases and finally figured out how to set up a never ending supply line. It's lacking compared to fallout 4 and 76 but in time I'm sure it will shine.

This bug is related with Starborn ships landing on planets while you are exploring on foot. Everytime a Starborn ship lands on the planet you are exploring, the bug appears. Very annoying... If you are on PC, there's a mod on Nexus that fixes "no npcs when you board a ship on space", however when it comes to ships on the ground the bug where no enemies show up still persists...

Yeah it's annoying how dumbed down the base building is but luckily I'm on pc where I can get mods to make it better.

There is a way of moving the Four Wall Hab Two Storey around to create a 5 Storey and 4 Storey highrise that will give you an internal staircase and allow you to attach habs to it to give a variety to height. It ain't pretty but it's all we have for the time being. Meanwhile all I see are things that the devs have used to decorate the game that we don't have ... yet 🤞

So I use Large Light Posts to help organize my power connections. They can't be damaged as far as I can tell and power can be linked through them no problem. Large light posts can be mounted on the top of military Habs and with decorations inside make good power sub stations. It makes functional sense to have them and looks great on a cliff or a hill side.

I'm having trouble getting into outpost building right now, and I know it's just due to the game being still relatively new. Outpost building in NMS for instance is a mature product at this point and just offers so much more variety. I know it'll come in time, but I'm an impatient sort.

I miss the settlement building of Fallout 4. I loved building foundations and using concrete and staircases, I have entire cities built in that game.

It would be interesting to see you also integrate the Sentry Tower into one these builds and if you can run a hallway in and out of it to another building. Having the Sentry Tower also means everything immediately around its perimeter lit up with lights from that tower. In my outpost I use it as an advantage point just for reconnaissance. However on top of all the buildings is always the best vantage points for Defense Turrets when pirates attack.

It's actually already possible to build chain link fences with mods, even though the Creation Kit isn't out yet. I don't think XBox or GamePass players can take advantage of that, but Steam players definitely can.

Extreme locations like pluto where there's no atmosphere and about as far from sunlight that solar arrays are all but useless. You should be using Fusion reactors. The larger advanced ones don't require resource input to operate but need considerable resources to build.

Pluto doesn't have any atmosphere to blow wind turbines, nor very much sunlight.

Being creative to use the Storage Units whether they be Solid Storage, Liquid Storage or the Gas Storage units and their upgrade versions as ground foundation pieces could be interesting if the habitation modules can be placed on them or used as structural support. We also know Storage Units can be built to have solid foundations if they are multiple stacked on top each other and delete the lower pieces the foundation moves upward. But the idea is to use that concept to build elevated modules or structurally supported modules with outpost creativity. Now I don’t know if that would work, but it’s an idea that could be tested with being creative. Well, I have Outposts, so I’ll test and okay with the idea.

Bro is anyone having the problem where they put crew in thier outpost and robots and ehen you come back theyre alla rpund the outpost beacon likenits a damn campfire ?? How do you fix that! I want those mugs working thier little fingers away at the beautiful crew station i made for them complete with desk fans and incases resin alien tadpoles

Nice How do you move objects vertically? I thought it isn't possible, but you "move it up a nudge".

It can only be done with certain outpost things, once you place it initially you can move it vertically before confirming the placement. Just keep on eye on your controls in the corner you'll see it pop up.

The outpost building system in this game is easily the most disappointing thing about it ... there's simply no variety, the fact that I have 8 outposts and I know they're all gonna look the same is so disappointing... then building them ends up being so buggy and glitchy, like I want to put the science hab on top of the small hexagon... why can't I? No logic at all.

Its not even just the outposts you create. I've seen so many civilian outposts all over the systems that are just hab boxes with airlocks. Its been centuries since humanity has settled the systems and yet there's still wonky hab modules on paradise planets. You see no communities.. nothing. I was hoping to see some western towns on Akira.

I expect some similarities among outposts, but once the creation kit is out, I expect to see some stunning designs.

It’s still all up to player creativity and not everyone is as creative as others. But just playing around, being creative and with the environment setting of a planet and its biome, unique Outposts can be created. Just like creating different ships with the builder despite it being a buggy system. However in the end a huge problem with Outposts is that the crew does absolutely nothing, nothing at all. In the future, we should be able to recruit other civilians to work or setup shops and habitations at outposts so they feel used.
