Norfolk Broads 1962 family holiday

I wasn’t born until 67 but I love looking back at Cinetapes and old pictures of what it used to be like back in the 60’s up to 80’s. Myself and my dad holidayed a couple of times on the Broads,hiring from Hoseasons but collecting our Boats ( one year Gemini 1 and the next Gemini 2 ) both boats 2-4 berth and perfect size for just the two of us,lovely old Wooden Boats with lots of varnish and Wooden Boat smells( Gemini 1 ) still had the old Gas mantles for lighting and the fridge 😳,early mornings were a smell of Gas,Damp and varnish with a Niff of Petrol in the background! Great memories and Smells. Myself and my Girlfriend go to Great Yarmouth quite a bit and I Love having a wander around the Old Dance Hall and seeing all the old pictures that are stuck on the hoarding around the Building ( it’s about time they fixed that place up ). Yarmouth is looking a bit grotty lately and the people aren’t as friendly but it’s still a nice place for a walk in the seaside air. The Place needs a Good revamp though and a good lick of fresh paint,it’s such a shame walking around old side streets and seeing Homes that used to be thriving B+B now dirty and disheveled flats for different People who don’t respect the Country that has offered them refuge and benefits. I’m afraid Yarmouth is going to go down the way of Hunstanton with No shops and just full of flats,the original places of Fish and Chips and Bakery etc,the people are moving out,long term residents are moving away from Hunstanton and Yarmouth to outlying quieter Villages where there are No Immigrants or Asylum seekers 🤷‍♂️ I’m not saying that to be racist but it is the truth.

Immaculately dressed people, British cars on quiet roads. We think we are lucky to live in modern times with technology and health and safety looking after us every where we go. Little do we know that the best times have been and gone, never to return again.

Nostalgic nonsense. I spent the 60's and early 70's on family boating holidays on the Norfolk Broads and life wasn't idyllic. For a start, the boats pumped sewage directly into the rivers , the water was dirty with very little fish life in it - only eels - and you were taking a risk if you swam in it. As for quiet roads, that was fine if you could afford a car, which in 1962 most people couldn't. And most women and children were treated as second-class citizens.

Thanks for sharing this, brought back some happy memories of the area, in 1962 I would have been 7 years old around the age of the boy in the film. I was surprised to see how quite the Bure Court Hotel seemed to be, I spent holidays in a boathouse of a relative that was opposite the Bure Court during the 60's, and it always seemed busy along with the Beehive Stores and Post Office, which had Brinkcraft Boatyard next to it when they first started. (way before Barnes Brinkcraft).

+Doug Percival Pleased that you enjoyed watching the film and thank you for sharing your memories. The film looks to have been taken fairly early in the year (no leaves on the trees) so it may well have been a quiet time for the Bure Court Hotel I suppose. Beautiful building and such a great loss.

brought back some good memories .How places have changed . This would of been my first introduction to the magic of the broads ,age 13. Now we are still coming ,and the magic is still there for us .

Great film, lots of recognisable places on the broads although much has changed in the buildings.

Thanks Carol, another really superb find. I was first intoduced to the Broads in 1962 and how differant the boating scene was then although many locations never alter. As the family cruise around the Northern Broads it was noticeable just how much we have lost and just how much of that was due to fire. From a boat anorak perspective I noted at George Smiths, Songster. Springsong and by the boatshed a Sparkle. Passing Martham their fleet was then let by Bradbeer. Passing St. Benets is a Chumley & Hawk Sheerline. At Horning Ferry are two Foxgloves from Easticks in their two tone pastel livery. One can also be seen at Salhouse although it might have been their older but similar Guilder Rose. At Wroxham the Knave of Hearts is seen manoeuvring with looking pristine through the bridge Little Ships Good Companions and a Herbert Woods Ray of Light class. Coming out of Wroxham we pass The Beehive which was the home of Mr Brinkhoff and we can see one of his Brinkcraft cruisers. The Brinkcraft yard in those days was not on the main river and today is the part of Barnes Brinkcrafts that ajoins next to Royalls. You may remember it was for a time Planet Craft. Also in this scene are the rather pleasing holiday homes at Dawncraft. Coming out of Wroxham the aft cockpit cruiser is either Bell Boats Gleebell or Jollybell. Down to Horning, at Norfolk Holiday Boats is one of their Monarchs and the white hulled craft, one of a class named after the planets. Of the boats in that our group hired, Starlight 11 was unique in being the only one of the class to have dual steering and was 26 foot long against the usual 24 foot. Note the lad playing with the gear lever. No single lever control in those days! Really one of the nicest films I've seen of the period. The trip down brought back many memories but I always seem to remember in the 60s just one long que through Swaffham and East Dereham, wonder if they travelled mid week? Think the star is the lad in his real Mae West lifejacket but I do have a lot of empathy for the lady getting on and off Starlight. In1962 I would have been jumping on and off. Today, well thats another story!

+fred collins Wonderful - thank you Fred! I don't know if they did mid week hires back then? Given how much they filmed, you would have expected some evidence if they had stayed somewhere else for a night before picking up the boat. It is very eraly in the season so I guess that may account for a little less traffic on the roads, but it is remarkably quiet. You are right though, I also think it is one of the best amateur films I've seen from that era ... although I have got a super one from 1969 yet to come! :-)
