The way that relatively small sail whips you through the water really shows what an efficient hull shape canoes have. And, come to think of it, the old viking long boats had much the same hull shape, and they were noted for their speed and sea-worthiness. Nice job, Simon - and it looks enormous fun!

Fantastic to have you on board Simon and once again thank you. The trip is going to be tough but so for filling and so much fun! We have a fantastic team now you have joined us mate. Anyway, I need to talking about this new speed boat you have 🤣... How fast is she now! Lol you really were blasting through the Broads dude. To think you haven’t sailed in 30 years you really did a top notch job pal. The rudder made turning so much easier than having to swap out the sail to the other side and having to hold the paddle in the front and back position. A treat to watch. The stew too 🤤, a hearty lunch for a speed boat pilot 😀. A very enjoyable video, thanks pal 👍

Of course you know you'll now have to start talking like a pirate, (Yaaaarrrrrr!), and start using your canoe barrel to carry your rum ration, ("Up Spirits, Splice the Mainbrace!") I'm thinking you could also rig some sort of a gun deck as well, a couple of 2 pounders or a couple of potato guns should make for an impressive broadside! I've only just come across this. Oh my goodness I am so impressed by this set up. In the past I've tried a bit of sailing on different boats. The last time was on a dinghy. With my very bad arthritic knees, by then, it was absolutely impossible, avoiding the boom, crawling across the deck when tacking. Even in a big yacht, which I wasn't sailing, we had to jump from one seat to the other. I'm even more crocked now (and old). But look at you - sitting easy whilst the sail swings across. Wow. I wish I'd known about that before now.

I have a few thoughts on what's wrong with our world. Taking time to get outdoors to hike, hunt, fish and canoe would go a ways toward getting things back in order. Nice video. Being so close to the water makes you look as though you're moving along really quick.

A Scootland trip? Be sure your passports in date, you'll need a visa don't forget, and after getting all the jabs I hope your mandatory application to join the SNP comes through okay. I'd also add an extra couple of days to allow for the queues at border. I am only joking of course, it sounds like an epic trip you have planned, and with a great cause to support too. I wish you all well with it and look forward to following it all. I have really enjoyed watching you sail your canoe, its been years since I last went wind powered watering. One piece of advice I'd give though, run the rope from the sail around a pully, it will decrease the load on your fingers by 50%.

Best wishes to Ant and his dad. I lost one of my grandmothers to Alzheimer's years ago. It's a pretty horrible way to be in especially at the end.

Hello Shane, thank you pal. Yeah it’s devastating as a family to have to go through this pain. I lost my Nan to dementia not so many years ago and that was hard enough. Organising this trip is helping mate, keeping my mind occupied. All the best to you. Cheers, Ant 👍.

Sir, brilliant. Looks terrifying to me but it’s brilliant! Thank you for the cooking, you know I enjoy that, I’ve never bothered with the additions to my Kelly’s Kettles, but I might now, it looks really good. As to your trip, wave at J27 on the M6! My dad, the most amazing man I’ve ever known, physicist and innovative educator, died from dementia a few years ago. A harrowing and cruel death for the loveliest man you could ever wish to meet. Stand by for a donation coming your way and thank you for your efforts for a worthy cause.

Great video and demo of canoe sailing. Really inspiring and informative and very practical. Also well done for bringing your own tinder and fuel. Lots of people think that burning dead wood or cones doesn't do any harm but it's always worth remembering that dead stuff provides habitat for other living things and so increase or maintains biodiversity. Also, unlike the person who left the evidence of a previous fire, your kettle is very low impact if used carefully.

Learned to sail on a Super Sailfish back in the early '60s at the Appalachian Mountain Club on Echo Lake, Mt Desert Island, Maine. You're gonna have six-pac abs by the time the summer's through! What a joy to watch. Owned a San Juan 21 swing keel then a Hunter 25.5 with a shoal-draft keel on the Great Salt Lake. What a joy sailing is! Studied up on celestial navigation just for giggles. Took a practice sextant and artificial horizon with me when I drove over-the-road. Still own my Astra 3B. Came real close to crewing on the Impatience out of Brisbane, AU, an International Offshore Racing boat converted to a cruiser, but chickened out because the conversion was VERY dicey and was afraid if she pitch-poled or rolled we'd never get out of it alive. Oh, well! Cheers, Simon.... sail on.... Spamcan

The opening visuals on this video were some of the best you've ever done Simon. Overall, it shows how much effort you make in producing these vids (paddling away, then coming back to get the camera etc) - superb! To be honest, I don't have sea legs, so I was a bit meh with the sailing a canoe but it looks fun! More than happy to make a donation to the Alzeihmer's fund - thanks for promoting this as it is a terrible, debiitating illness which, I feel, is still misunderstood by many. Hope Maggie is well - can we have a video with her soon please?
