Kevin Hall and I are exploring Norfolk and the Broads. We have taken a trip to near Billockby to look at a ruined church, All Saints, that was struck by lightning in 1762 and has remained in a state of ruin. A chancel building was later added in which the font, pews and other church furnishings have been kept since the tragedy.

That church was an amazing find Richard, unbelievable to think it was struck by lightning all those years ago and just left as a ruin. Really interesting.

Those windows were amazing!😍 Love!!!💗 Wow that must've been one mighty big bolt of lightning to do such damage! Amazing they have been able to keep the rest of it intact for all these many more years!

I assume that the lightning cause the main damage to the structure and over time, from 1762, it probably crumbled more and more.

The holes are 'put-log' holes. Where the builders fitted the timber scaffolding during the construction of the tower. They would have been filled in once the tower was built. But over time the filling often falls out.

Wow that's it amazing, yet quite sad. It is so surprising it has survived all that time! I wonder if it will ever be put back how it was, but with a lightning conductor! It would be interesting. Well done great video 👍

Found this info Richard - A medieval parish church, dating mainly to the 15th century. The church is now mostly in ruins after the roof of the nave collapsed during a storm in 1762. The chancel is still is use, and was restored in the late 19th century.

Very evocative church - I wonder how many churches were in this sort of state before the victorians ‘restored’ them. Interesting that the porch has also been restored, I expect it’s only used for a store.

True - pleased that the Victorians did restore them, but it is nice also to see a ruin from time to time for it fires the imagination.

Totally unrelated to this video but I knew you’d love to hear it. You may remember I told you on an earlier video that we’d decided to home educate our daughter Grace (who adores your Shrewsbury videos). Anyway so I said to her today “Grace you have worked so hard this week, you get to chose what we do tomorrow”. She said ‘I want a ‘look up day’ I said “a look up day?” Grace “yeah Richard Vobes said on one of his videos that you have to look up too really see the buildings. So I want a look up day in town (Shrewsbury). We could take artsy photos” So, tomorrow is a richard Vobes “look up day”. 😂

Fascinating video as always. I just a question, which may be a stupid question, really: what is the "three word location"? it looks like some sort of link but I can't figure out what it exactly is. i.e. In this video it was ///join.surpassed.engulfing
@RichardVobes

Type those three words into here: what3words.com and you will have a location pinpointed in the video.

It makes you wonder what the folk thought about it back in 1762!

Wow. What a fascinating find. The year of 1762 for the lightning strike is interesting. That was the same year, for the first time, lightning conductors were started to be fitted to ships due to severe storm damage at sea, one being Captain Cooks Endeavour. It sort of brings the year of the church into more significance. Another excellent movie of a church I had no idea existed. Great work again guys.
@RichardVobes
@RichardVobes 5 жыл бұрын
Clearly they were just too late to fit the lightning conductor to this church! Cheers Tony, I didn't know they fitted them to ship masts.
