Bill, your pine is absolutely beautiful! I have two in my home. One in my living room and the other in my bedroom.
@lindawolffkashmir27685 жыл бұрын
I have one of these, a couple of tips: If you keep them outside in the summer, they really flourish. Mine is three years old and about 5’8 now. These plants will die in the cold, be sure to bring it in when the temp is around 45°. However, as long as it has water, it can take a high amount of heat. As the plant grows, keep transplanting into bigger pots. Of course, eventually it may get too big for your place, and you may have to make a decision about what you want to do with it. These plants may look similar to the northern pines, but are not really the same. There may be a degree of toxicity to them that could affect your pets or you if you try and consume parts of it. These are nice, pretty little trees, and if treated well, will grow and grow until they get too big to rehome!
@danieldevito63802 жыл бұрын
You're right about these trees being mildly toxic to animals, however, at least in my experience, they don't seem too appealing to animals. I have 3 dogs,4 cats, and 2 parrots, but not one of them has ever tried nibbling on any part of the tree, despite it being easily accessible to all of them.

Dec. 2020: I finally bought my 1st Norfolk Island Pine. Found out it's not really a pine tree, but a tropical plant from the South Pacific. That's why they perish below 35° outside and prefer humidity indoors with temps of 50-85°F (or so they say). This could become my year-round Christmas tree 🌲⛄ 🌲

I'm so glad you made this video. I know I'm late. But, I just got a Norefolk island pine. I'm raising it in my room because I live where we have winter. So, it's good to hear you can successfully raise them indoors. I've not had much success with keeping plants alive. However, I had a flourishing pink poinsettia that lived for an entire year before death.
@ElectricityTaster9 жыл бұрын
I planted one a year ago in my garden (I live on the opposite side of the world from Norfolk Island) and it's doing well. I planted it mainly because they say it grows straight even in windy places. It was around 130cm when I bought it and now it's around 190cm. It has grown more branches and even branches on branches on the side where the wind hits it, I think in an attempt to keep growing straight as the weight of the branches would counter the force of the wind blowing it the other way. The trees are quite popular around here; people usually plant them when they get married. Near my house there is one that is at least 30 years old and it towers above any other vegetation.

Hi Bill my Norfolk pine is about 14 to 15 years old I got it at a nursery I use to work at. it's gone through three moves with me and finally this last move is to a house that we bought so I was able to plant it out front with some Tasmanian tree ferns. When I bought the tree it was about 2 foot tall and now it about 12 feet tall and we had to top it because we got solar and it was gonna block the sun from hitting our panels. Thanks for that aerial shot that was beautiful I even took a screenshot and I'm going to use it for my screensaver I hope you don't mind ;)

That NIP looks great. Plants often have poorly developed root systems when they get larger - I think I would keep it rather underpotted like yours - otherwise, they tend to be very loose in the soil and become floppy
@michaelhargus43164 жыл бұрын
I bought mine last year and it has new shoots all over it. Since September, when sun got low enough in sky where it managed to shine through the south-facing windows again, the tree has been growing like grass after a July rain storm. It probably grown close to a foot just since September alone. In fact, it even has brand new shoots spouting from the very crown of the tree. All I did was: Transplant it to a pot big enough for it to grow, Keep the blinds open so the sun can get to it, Close the heat/ a.c vent located directly above the tree, Feed it real good every 5 to 6 months, Water it real good once a week, and Cut off any dead branches that would appear at the bottom. The humidity around the tree maintains itself simply through evaporation of soil moisture and cooking in the kitchen. Nothing too complicated.

@kylee55603 жыл бұрын
I'm still learning about NIP, but I do know that a lot of plants like to be a little rootbound, and perhaps moving it from its nursery pot to a larger pot stopped it's growth? I would suggest pulling it out and evaluate how large the rootball is to the pot size, and consider downsizing.

If you live in Florida ,California, Mississippi, south and North Carolina , Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama and coastal Texas, this plant will be great for you. If planted in the ground be prepared for a HUGE tree, this tree can live for hundreds of years and there trunks grow very large. They are slow growers as the mature. Ah, 3:05 explains my permanently curly lower branches. I googled why they're like that and didn't find an answer, because the closest thing was getting droopy due to lack of water, but they're not droopy, they are firmly set in that curl. So I guess I let it dry out at some point and they just got stuck that way, even when I got back to more frequent watering. I think I have one of "the other" species - the one with thinner, softer branches. Also they grow in twos instead of sixes, although that might be due to younger age, idk.

Mine was doing well for 2 years, but it now has droopy leaves. What’s wrong?
@PlantzNThings4 жыл бұрын
If you have Facebook you can post some photos to the PlantzNThings whats growing page. Without seeing what it looks like its hard to answer... as they age... and the branches get longer there can be some droop and that can be normal

Hi , i have one of those trees , i water them twice a week (the shop told me to) is that enough ? i notice some yellowish color change , what is the reason?
@PlantzNThings4 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of factors to consider when watering... 2 times a week seems like a lot... but if the soil is drying out that fast then that's what it needs... I wait until the top few inches of the soil is dry before i water. and then i water it well. depending on the size of your plant... the pot size, humidity level of the room, light levels... it all plays a part in how much water your plant uses.... I hope this helps you... I know it didn't directly answer your question.

I need to root my Norfolk pine. It’s grown 3 stalks and the one I need to root is too tall. How do I do it. It lives on Long Island New York. It’s outside in the summer. So I need to do this before I bring it in for the fall. Can you help me?

My baby pine doesn't look like this 🤔🤔 it was labelled Norfolk island pine........ but it is young. Could this be why? It's way darker than the one in your video, and the branches are almost single-style. They don't fan out like the one you have. Did they mislabel my plant?????? I'm trying to get the thing to grow big!!! Haha

Depending on how intense and hot your sun is... a south window might be too bright... a humidifier will help... also let the top few inches of soil dry before you water.... you want a soil mix that drains freely

Your Norfolk Island Pine is beautiful! It has grown great since last year. :) I never seem to have any luck with them. :/ Btw. some time ago you did an all your cactus/succulents video. Have you thought about doing one for all of your orchids? It would be really fun to see how many you have. It seems to be a lot! Like always, a great video. You always inspire others to keep trying new things!

What is the best soil to use with this plant?
@PlantzNThings4 жыл бұрын
Anything that retains a little moisture... but drains freely... they don't like being soggy but hate to be dry for long...a standard potting soil will work... you can add extra perlite or bark to the mix to lighten it up and improve drainage

Hello Bill, I love your pine tree, its gorgeous. I’m glad that I’ve found someone who obviously knows how to handle northfolk pines, most people kill them. On that note I really need your help. I bought 2 pine trees this Christmas. One of them died in about a week. It just dried up completely. I tried to water it more, but that didn’t seem to work. It just became bridle and dried up, even though the roots were soaking wet. The second one I have is doing better, though I need your advice on how to care for it properly. I mist it daily, and I water it weekly. I’m thinking of repotting it, since I don’t know what kind of soil they used in the store, what type of soil you suggest to use for pine trees? Also I live in NY and its winter here now. I keep it next to a window that gets lots of direct sunlight, but because it’s next to a radiator, that I cannot shut off, I keep the window open at the top to make it not so hot. To add humidity I also keep 2 bowls of water next to the tree. And even doing all of that some of its needles are bridle and dry, especially at the bottom. Its doing better than when I brought it from the store, even gave some new roots, but not great. Can you give me some advice on what I can do to improve it. I know its a lot of questions, but I desperately need your help and would love to save this tree.

These trees either love you or hate you.. I have killed my fair share. It sounds like you will have a problem no matter what you do.. Is the radiator a forced air , electric baseboard or hot water style? I would repot your plant in the spring. Give it a well drained peat based soil. if i remember correctly i added peat moss perlite and a little orchid bark to my mix. you want it to hold moisture but also not stay soggy. if they stay too wet they don't do well and if they are too dry they don't do well. with this a known issue to need that will draining moisture holding mix. if you have either the forced air or electric baseboard heat this produces a very dry heat and the plant will not like that one bit... If you are not able to redirect the airflow away from the plant i would like to recommend you get a cool mist humidifier for your home and place it near the plant.. you can get a good quality one that turns on and off automatically when the desired humidity level is reached. i would try and keep the area around the plant between 55-60% humidity I hope this helps... join us on the Facebook page if you have any more questions.. PlantzNThings Hey Bill, I'm not sure, but i think my radiator is hot water style. I live in an old building, so I'm not sure 100%. But i already moved the tree away from it. I have southern windows, so i get full sun, all day long. Hopefully it will be enough for it. Thank you for your help. I will defiantly buy a humidifier. Which fertilizer is best to use for these plants? There are a few i wanted to try: Miracle grow all purpose plant food, Schultz All Purpose plant food or Superthrive.

I use miracle grow most of the time. I use a weak strength. but I don't feed it regularly to be honest.

PlantzNThings I'll try miracle grow then, hopefully my plant will grow up to be as beautiful as yours. Thanks again for your help.
