As someone who's from Chicago, used to seeing everything all the time except for KCS and Ferromex, I seem to forget that you guys west of the Mississippi River don't see Norfolk Southern all that often. Awesome to see you got a little treat out in your direction.

Happy New Year: This is a solid catch and great start to 2023! Definitely bizarre seeing a DC power assigned to coal train service in this day and age, I wonder if that's why the 1810 was snagged somewhere, despite being so far from home.
@CoasterFan2105 Жыл бұрын
Happy New Year! Yeah, that's a really good question. Although, BNSF seems to frequently put at least one C44 on the coal trains that come through, sometimes more. Not sure why. I saw another one go through the other night with a CSX AC4400 and another BNSF 700 series C44.

My son and I watch BNSF coal trains powering through Georgia (just south of Atlanta) on NS lines frequently. The first time we spotted one, I was very surprised! The icing on that cake was an Executive paint scheme BNSF engine. After some research on the interwebs, I found out Georgia Power has a contract with BNSF to haul coal. As always, your videos are awesome! Keep up the great work Mike!

I've seen NS 1810 twice over the last month and a half on my subdivision over in Western MT. But as a DP not a leader. We end up with NS engines quite a bit, but at least or BNSF locos have fridges where the NS units are just a styrofoam box.

As a Georgia resident, familiar with daily Norfolk Southern trains, but also a former resident of Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon, it's fascinating to me that a Norfolk Southern locomotive would be part of the locomotive consist of a coal train out of the Powder River Basin, presumably through Montana, across Idaho and Washington, and then into a Canadian seaport. When a locomotive from the distant Southeast is lashed to such a train, are the engineers from Norfolk Southern or one of the railroads in the region? And how is Norfolk Southern remunerated for use of the locomotive?
@CoasterFan2105 Жыл бұрын
You are correct on the routing. The trains run as a set on a loop for a long period of time, sometimes a couple months with the same power sets. They go through Southern Montana on the MRL, then on the BNSF through Idaho, into Washington, then down along the Columbia River to Vancouver, WA and north to Canada. Going back east, they run empty over Stevens Pass because it is more direct. The trains are all crewed by BNSF, even with visiting locomotives. There's a "horsepower hours" agreement in place with a lot of railroads, so if they end up borrowing a locomotive from another RR, they have to "repay" by providing the railroad they borrowed from with one of their locomotives for the same number of operating hours.
@JohnDrewVoice Жыл бұрын

It happens from time to time. Sometimes, railroads are short locomotives in an engine terminal, so they borrow from other railroads. When that happens, there's typically an agreement that the railroad that borrowed the locomotive has to then supply the railroad they borrowed from with a locomotive for the same amount of time. The other time you see locomotives from other railroads on some trains is if the train is a "run through" from another railroad.
