Norfolk Southern F Units: Last Run Through Toledo

When it comes to watching freight trains on busy mainline railroads in the midwest, few places compare to Northwest Ohio. With three Class I Railroads and a variety of shortlines and secondary routes, the City of Toledo is a railroad hotspot.
Situated along the western banks of Lake Erie, Toledo, Ohio is the fourth largest city in Buckeye State. Known as the “Glass City,” Toledo exploded in population and industrial growth throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, the city boasts a population of 275,000 people and is served by Norfolk Southern, Canadian National, and CSX Transportation.
Throughout the month of June, 2019, we visited the Toledo area three times to document trains along Norfolk Southern's Chicago Line. In addition to documenting the usual freight trains, we were also able to record the NS OCS train running through the Buckeye State one last time with the F Units on the point.

Alright DIB team; I've got a story for you. When this was filmed back in 2019, you guys did a live stream of the OCS leaving Toledo and mentioned it was on its way to Harrisburg. Living along the NS Cleveland line, I assumed it would come through my neck of the woods. I took a leap of faith and headed out to the tracks and waited on the OCS. After a three hour wait, it finally showed up. Thank you guys so much for sharing your catch of the OCS in its prime! Without it, I don't think I would've caught it. Hey sonny mcdonald thry wouldn't need to scrap the norfolk and southern passenger train. Think about it the train might be older but they could give amtrak a run for their money. Think about the possibility of lower ticket prices compared to amtrak. It would be a dream come true to see that train moving again after all these years.

NS got some F units when Conrail was broken up. Possibly 270 or 271 maybe both. I've never heard or seen the F units that went to CSX. Conrail's Fs were split 50-50.

Those old "F" units had a lot of class. Compared to the Amtrak units today which look like Amtrak itself, a worthless tax burden on the American since 1972. Amtrak should be abolished. It doesn't work now and never has, especially the long distance routes.

The fact of the matter is that passenger rail receives minimal government assistance per passenger mile as compared to air travel. For years Amtrak was told they had to survive on ticket sales. Now look at what the airlines get in the form of air traffic control, infrastructure and tax breaks and it pales in comparison. Add in new time delays because of TSA security, and a lot of short hop air rides could be better served by trains. And who pays for the roads? Trucks do more damage and pay less in taxes for that damage than car users. Talk about tax subsidies.

At 38:22 time mark, that's a "whole lotta love" pulling power. Can anyone here explain how these engine sync together, power wise, to pull the same. Is it torque, rpm, amps, coupler pressure? I've always wondered this. Fantastic video here, thanks so much. I'm from Cleveland, Ohio and never knew until now Toledo was such a big train hub.
