This was so very helpful. My 21 year old son has a virtual interview next week, which he's told should take about 20 mins. He's extremely shy and isn't always able to present himself as he'd like. Having some insight into what to expect will enable him to practice😀 Railroading is al he's ever, ever wanted to be part of.

It depends on the needs of your terminal, how many conductors are training at your terminal currently(trainees have to be paired with conductors that have been on the job for longer than 12 months) and how long the medical office takes to return the results. Some people have onboarded application to start date in 2 and a half weeks and some guys have waited 9 months to get a start date. It's a painfully slow process. My only advice is to be as patient as you can and if you need to snag another gig while you wait, go for it. I interviewed in late August and my start date wasn't issued until late December for January.

Had one with diabetes, 6'2, morbidly obese, couldn't climb cars, everyone thought he was in his hotel room dead (they had to call his family because he wasn't answering the door or phone), failed one class, they passed him the second time (got help) and he got hired. He was as worthless as a three dollar bill.

@KurtisCharlton2 жыл бұрын
Could be two weeks could be a few months. Depends on the needs of your terminal or the number of people in the upcoming class. Its been much faster lately because summer is the railroads busiest time of year since weather isn't as much of a factor.

How long does it take for them to do the medical exam
@KurtisCharlton2 жыл бұрын
Depends on where they do it. All of the home med exams were running 30-60 days to return info so to speed up the process they are now trying to do them in GA when you go for training. There are pros and cons to doing it that way but I’m glad they are trying to speed up the onboarding process. I had friends wait 9 months to get a start date. They are starting to feel the pressure now because summer is coming and they are insanely understaffed.

Agreed. That’s true of all Class 1 Railroads. I started these videos for that very reason. My grandfather was a retired engineer from NS. Supported a family of 7 and my grandmother never worked a day in her life. Still doesn’t due to spousal pension. NS has paid millions in medical bills and supported our family for nearly 40 years. It’s a rough job and it’s not for everyone. However it isn’t my place to discourage people from trying it to see if they would enjoy it. Still one of the only industries left to offer a pension, union support and opportunities that require only a highschool diploma or GED and are willing to train you from day 1. I have family members that have spent more than 275k on student loans to be a Doctor and their schedule is the same if not worse than these terminals. The pay is within 20k and some engineers make more than he does. My goal is to help people get through the onboarding, training and OJT. After they mark up, it’s up to them and their families to decide if it’s right for them. Thanks for stopping by👍🏻🚂
