People gotta understand that the "SPARTAN GUARDS" aren't flag boys... The snare player was literally breathing on top of the woodwinds heads. They get to close all the time and this same thing happens all the time. Yes, spartan guards run up to push them back. It was agreed that they wouldn't get to close, and the guy got way to excited and got to close... they know the deal. It is what it is.

Being that I am a percussionist from Richmond, Virginia and that I know some people from VSU, I know that the rivalry has always been over which band is better. VSU has done similar stuff to NSU, according to which this video proves. Now, the fact that VSU is doing basic drum cadences and doing technical stuff gives it a more Orchestral/Afro-Latino feel in their music selections. That, plus in this video, VSU had stale routines from the girls in contrast to Norfolk State. Now, the way Norfolk State's Spartan Legion were in back battery and brass sections were, they sounded very even due to how they spent a lot of time in band camp more, whereas with VSU, the brass section was mousey while their back battery was loud, making the frequencies off. That, plus the lack of discipline from VSU in how he fired off at NSU's back battery shows how scientific in drumming Norfolk State is in the manipulation of drum sonics. Now, if Norfolk State's back battery got to them in Go-Go like that, imagine if Virginia State University lost to Michigan State University, which will be humiliating for them. Why do I say this? Because Michigan State and Norfolk State both comprehend and study the manipulation of drum sonics, to which nobody knows about. Virginia State's Trojan Explosion has been taught a few things about noise leveling, but not in detail when it comes to musical buildups. Nonetheless, the arrogance from VSU and confusion came out in that clip.

Both bands did good but from an outsider looking in, I'm leaning more towards VSU for the win. NSU fanfares were below average. There were 15+ trombones, and twice as many tubas as VSU, but you could barely hear them, and some of them weren't even playing. NSU has the size, but VSU wins in sound quality. Also NSU did a little too much dancing during their hype mix rather than actually playing, but that's just my opinion.
@misterdee11176 жыл бұрын
Aaliyah Coleman I disagree wholeheartedly. NSU sound was both superior and louder. I think that the song selection for fanfares were worse than VSU (which did great for both the Bones and Baritones). They also packed power FOR THEIR SIZE. I think valid arguments could be made since they sounded good but your justifications reaching.

Mister Dee NSU won only the flag and drum line sectionals. And only won the hype mix band sections. I was there. Of course NSU would be louder and sound more full as they outnumber VSU 2-1. @@quietstorm3574 If you look @ what VSU' s drum line has done in previous years & last year in particular not only does it not match it's not even remotely close to their style or history. Take a look at any of NSU' s tunnel performances & you will see that the continuity is ever present. Better yet compare what they tried to do this year with what NSU did last year. Also when you take a look @ last year's NSU's entrance last year, make note of the VSU people intently recording them. The proof is not only in the pudding but on video as well. They copied. #facts

@@niiabladeyotu5514 From Richmond, VA, a percussionist myself and I know people from VSU who haven't publicly said that. Some of the people in VSU have rivalries from multiple schools in the surrounding counties, Prince George, Chesterfield and Dinwiddie, along with the cities, Petersburg and Hopewell. VSU always had a jealous and lazy spirit with them... ESPECIALLY when it came to NSU and many other colleges. If Michigan State University's Drumline battled Virginia State University, they would have lost to Michigan State due to the pristine discipline and how technical Michigan State is with one Go-Go influenced drum cadence. However, Norfolk State had more proper hand placings and more styles pulling out of the hat, even when their Go-Go cadences were fluent. Virginia State, on the other hand, was sloppy in hand positions of drums like that. What you spoke was true facts.
