Happen to own a dvd with footage of 611's last run from the 20th century. At the time when I watched the DVD as a child, the DVD being "Steam in the Summer" by Railway Production 611 was the only steamer I knew that was retired and when I got back into liking trains again in 2018 I was shocked to learn it returned to steam 3 years prior in 2015. Hope to see the Class J in the next few years since it's my favorite streamliner and cause I have a feeling once its flues expire in 2030 611 and even 4501 when its flues expire in 2029 both engines might possibly go back into retirement again since they were only brought back for the NS's 21st-century steam program that went from 2011-2015.

Footage of that trip can be found on the Greg Scholl DVD, "Memories of Norfolk & Western 611", which features the last trips the 611 pulled in the Cincinnati area, including the trip shown in "Steam in the Summer". Highly recommended.

This should have never been 611’s final run of the 20th Century.

Wonder why 611 had freight cars behind several passenger cars?

Just for braking purposes.

Oh, though NS wanted them to do it and another reason why too

When the engines where deadheading NS made an effort to not waste a move. Frisco 1522 even moved a small freight while on NS.
