theory/interpretation: i think from the shocking way he reacts to the female computer voice, "mom?!!" this may have been a voice he had heard when he was first created, and has associated with being that of a mother, it being a central computer afterall, then, he realizes it is just that, the voice he remembers and recognizes, he realizes is soulless and just a system, his world comes crashing down as he finds no more comfort, he realizes he's alone and his behavior changes from fear to realization at the end of this clip. this is just a theory, this movie invokes so many thoughts.

I love the disturbing ambiguity of that moment, it looks like a real psychosis, or connecting with real trauma… It's hard to tell what's going on.

That was not Tyrell's coat he was embracing in tihs cut. I think it was Sebastian's. Would he have been remorseful killing him. Needs comfort from mom.

I guess him saying "mom?" when hearing the female computer voice was a way of showing a teetering relationship on the boundry of artifical, and human. Just what I took from it. I love this movie so much!

The meaning of "-Mom!", in my opinion is: Batty was created by The Tyrell Corp. and thus his so called "memories" as well. The elevator voice must have been recycled as the memory Batty has of his mothers voice. It is almost as if he leans over to scream out to his mom on the other side of the wall.

Roy didn't have a fake memory implant... that was only Rachael, remember? But he definitely identified with the need to have a mother, being emotionally identical to humans, and yes, like a 4-year old child...

I always thought of Tyrell Corp. as the 'mother'... Tyrell the father... Tyrell Corp. the mother... the piramids sugested me a womb... now... the voice on the speaker... the voice of Tyrell Corp... the voice of 'mom'... cold... devoided of any emotion...

You have to understand even though batty has superior strength and intelligence he kind of has the mind frame of a child. Plus if you want to get into more detail the the computer voice probably sounded the same as his so called mother from his fake memory implant.

I've only ever seen the Editor's Cut version, but I think I would have liked to have seen this elevator scene included. How he got to see the unseeable man(elevator with the access card), the conversation w/Tyrell and killing from the director's cut, AND THEN how Batty escaped from the high security building(hence the first elevator part with the access card) NOT ONLY showing that he feels fear/remorse/guilt(?), but the voice in the elevator is the same as the fictitious memory of his "Mom"!

And now I think about it, I think the "mom?" Was spoofed in the Spoof for the Matrix movie called "computer boy." The character playing Neo is phoned by Morpheus, and when asked "do you know who this is?" that is the guess Neo makes. Not once. Twice.

what was the perpose of them stopping in the elevator and going again? also in the origanl version of the film after roy kills tyrell, roy was to go to the nest floor up and find the real tyrell in a sargofagas( casket) were he really was, however due to the buget and small shooting schedule they had to throw that idea away. Syd mead created the artwork of this "tomb" but again never made it into full production. that would have been cool to see.

Originally Ridley Scott had the idea, that Dr. Tyrell is already a Replicant an after Roy killed him he takes the elevator to the top floor and he finds Dr. tyrell´s dead Body who died 3 Years ago. I think this lost footage shows roy, wenn he drives to the other floor!

Fortunately, Ridley is just as good of a co-editor as he is a creator of material. The "mom!" doesn't quite fit the flow of the film, but it is a truly great moment. For some audiences it's too broad and would have disrupted the suspension of disbelief, and actually it's kind of unintentionally funny and B-Movieish.

Yes, It Was J.F. Sebastian's Coat he was holding onto after he killed him because Sebastian's jacket had the access elevator pass card for Roy Batty to escape easily!

Why the elevator speask in Spanish? At the begining it says "azul 50" (blue 50) "You have 10 seconds", "Uno, dos, ..." (One, two,...). When Roy descends, it says "18 Rojo" (18 Red), and Roy then seems to say "Mom?", and then start counting in Spanish again until Roy inserts something like a coin. Why Roy seems to identify an Spanish female voice as "mom"? I don't get it...
