Norinco Chinese MAUSER: Rugged, Cheap and Practical

I’m a big fan of collecting old norinco rifles . What they lack in beauty they make up for in function . I don’t have a bad one , in semi or bolt . They all work great, built tough, and good out on the farm .

They get one barreled action, a pocketknife and a hundred stock blanks and locked in their apartments and have to make them fit and carved out. If they don't meet their weekly quota, they don't get their weekly allowance of fish heads and rice.

@@toddh6541 probably so. I think you guys are possibly getting imports up there that we can't here. That's kinda what I'm jealous of. Milsurp has come to a halt here compared to decades past. Plus there are so many makers I just flat out was ignorant to or didn't realize they made certain models. Being an American, when I hear Norinco, I'm thinking defense / tactical style weapons. I had no clue they made rifles like the one featured here.

I just bought 2 of these rifles at my local pawn shop, 308 and a 243 at $225 each I didn't have high hopes, But after mounting night force scope on the 243 a vortex on the 308 and putting 100 rounds through each rifle I can say I'm impressed,at 200 yards I got 2" groups and for a hunting rifle is say that's more than acceptable,My brother loved the 308 so I gave it to him and my daughter took the 243 so I'm in the market for more Norinco rifles

@@theangrycanuck8331 the 308 had a synthetic stock kinda like the old cheap RAM LINE stocks but the 243 has a decent walnut stock,Triggers were ok for hunting but I installed After market Mauser triggers in both rifles and polished the bolts and lugs, Basically took the rough edges off everything, But I wouldn't think twice about grabbing one and hitting the bush with it, Very dependable and accurate plus they carry good in the woods,I will say I tried my 3 favorite shelf brands of ammo Barnes, Winchester supreme and Remington Cor lokt, neither rifle cared for them or my hand loads but started punching same hole groups with NORMA ammo,

I own 3 SKSs from the early 2000s and a 2007 M305 (M-14 copy), all reliable and accurate, there are a few new norinco Mausers for sale around my location for 500 beans, but for the same money I can get a choice of dozens of 1600-1640 Husqvanas that have flowed into Canada, it's an easy decision.

Nice review with good information. The Interarms/Birmingham/Yugo mausers aren't around much anymore. They are a bit stiffer in the action than most military mausers, but still good quality, and were made in many North American calibers.

These Steyr SSG normaly have press fit barrels. Some gunsmith convert them to threading, when changing the barrel.

Chinese imports of firearms were banned in 1989 in the US. We don't see Norincos very much anymore. Seems like this would be a good "utility rifle". The kind you can leave laying around behind the seat in the truck and not worry about scratches and dings. Thank you! 👍

Thank you Gary, I didn't know about the ban on Chinese rifles - interesting. I agree - this is a completely practical rifle - easy to shoot, tough and free of cosmetic worries. Something like a battle rifle for sporting purposes. Hope they lift the ban - China makes a great SKS as you know as well as excellent .22s; many are copies - but many things are copies of something IMHO All the best to you.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Thank you. Oddly enough, the Norinco SKS and AKs were considered junk when they were available in the US. Now they are considered "the best". 🤷‍♂ They also made and sold here a copy of the Browning .22 Auto, the CZ 452 .22 Bolt Action and the M14/M1A rifle. All were relatively crude compared to the originals, but every test report of them I ever saw said they worked well. The import ban was imposed by President George H.W. Bush in response to a school shooting in CA where the gunman ignored all the existing laws (including the one against shooting children in a schoolyard) and killed some kids with a Norinco AK47. He said it was to punish the Chinese for "Human Rights violations". President Obama banned any firearms imported from Russia and most recently President Biden banned ammo imports from Russia. While the President of the USA can do nothing legislatively, they do have wide powers on imported items and can unilaterally impose tariffs or import bans. Of course, other Presidents could unilaterally remove those bans. But, so far, none have. President Trump, who never missed an opportunity to tell us he "supports the 2nd Amendment", could have lifted both the Chinese and Russian firearms import bans. He didn't. 🤷‍♂

The Chinese rifle import ban was in 1993 by President Clinton. Chinese shotguns were still allowed to be imported, but rifles & pistols were done. In his second term, Clinton also banned semiautomatic military rifle imports from Russia. No more SKS or SVT rifles. Since Saiga rifles were technically sporting rifles and did not accept military magazines, they were exempted from the ban. Of course, sanctions have almost completely cut off Russian gun & ammo imports.

@@donwyoming1936 George HW Bush banned the import of foreign "assault rifles" in May,1989. (not just Chinese) 43 models were specifically banned. The ban was made "permanent" in August, 1989. Though "permanent" means "until lifted by another President" You are correct that Chinese "sporting rifles" and handguns were later banned by other Presidents. Obama had banned SOME Russian imports of firearms in 2014. The rest were banned by the "Best 2A President EVER" Donald Trump in June, 2017. Adding to his refusal to lift previous import bans, the banning of bump stocks, supporting "red flag" laws and "universal background checks" (ban on private firearms sales) to his 2A "credentials" Biden has banned the import of Russian made ammunition by refusing to renew import licenses. When existing licenses to import Russian ammunition expire, there will be no more.

I have a zastava m70 pss in 6.5SE . Picked it up 2nd hand never been shot . The bolt was very heavy and sticky . After a little bolt work and cleaning up sharp machine edges its coming along well .

That's the way Paul - those Zastava's have a very very high dollar to accuracy and value ratio; and the actions are made the way Mausers are supposed to be made and the stocks are fine - everything one would want in a rifle is there IMHO

Hard to go past a Mauser-Action , they just 'Work ' . I found myself drawn to the beautiful rifles on the rack behind you . I bought a rifle once , just for the spectacular 'thumb-hole' stock , with the finest schnabel fore-end I've seen . It is a P14/17 in .303-caliber , Sporterised by BSA in the 40's (maybe) . It was dirt-cheap as it had a 'shot'-barrel. It turned-out to have a great-barrel after I cleaned it thoroughly ; bright-sharp-lands appeared with no-apparent-wear and repeated-cleaning removed every dark-spot . I was more-than-surprised that a 'Dealer' didn't bother to even clean it . Dave NZ

Dropped my Norinco jw 105 5.56x45 NATO and the damn stock broke off along one side of the entire side rail all the way up to the rear. Its a super easy fix and already have alot of it fixed. Add afew pins and probably bed the entire stock to add more strength to the super weak dry stock. The stock is made of some kind of cheap wood that sounds dry when you tap on it and it dents and chips really easy. swapped out the red dot sight and put a bushnell banner wide angle scope x4 power so I could hit things out to 300 yards and past. I wish I could find one of those. Ill probably buy a stoeger p350 next for duck hunting this spring time. Ill use my norinco jw 105 in 5.56 with 1 *12 twist, shoots 55 grain fmj the best, for deer hunting this year and give my nephew his first high power rifle for his birthday this september my savage 243 axis 2 xp. Might even get a keltec su16 !!!

I am surprised / impressed. Last Chinese Mausers I inspected were military issue and the steel must have been soft. Action was rolled over from the bolt handle.

Mmm going have to get one of those for the collection. New rifles with iron sights are disappering and thats sad because I just don't trust straight scoped rifles for reliability and durability when your way back in the mountains. My Savage model 1920's are my favorite with my pre 64's model 70's right behind, such smooth actions and a joy to hunt with.

Now I have 4, two in early production and 2 in later production. They are in different configurations with iron sights and factory installed lyman 54 sights also one with the marbles S20 reciever sight. The sights alone are rare as are the rifles..Just love them and their absolutely awsome shooting rifles. Whoops forgot to add 2 in 300sav, one 250-3000 and other is rebarreled in 22-250 rem.

Hey it's me again Mike. I didn't even know that Norinco made any Mauser copies. I was mostly familiar with their SKS. I just checked on GunBroker. There were only 3 Norinco center fire bolt action rifles. All Mosin-Nagant type 53 in 7.62x54R. Also one 22 rimfire copy of something.

I have a custom varmint .243 Win rifle built on a Zastava/MARK X action from 1979, built in 1987 and that trigger assembly looks very similar. The factory Zastava trigger unit is superb, with a wide range of fine adjustment to suit. The action itself was very well finished with very good clean machining, and done up in a highly polished blue. My action is Interarms marked and it would seem they had very high standards, making sure the folks in Kragujevac did good work for them. The only 'upgrade' I did, was to add a "Blitzschnell" mainspring from Wolff. As for Chinese firearms I am like you - They can and do make quality items to a price-point, and all I have ever encountered were reliable, very functional and effective for the job at hand. I sold firearms for a living and I bet many who chided Chinese firearms in my stores, would love to have a few dozen today... Just look at what these same folks said about MAC-90s at the time are going for today. Even the US Govt during the VN war concluded after exhaustive evaluation, that captured Chinese Type-56 AKs, were fully the equal if not at times even better made than its Soviet kin. A little gap in the stock behind the receiver tang is a good thing. It won't crack the stock. I would buy two of this rifle. However, where I live, Norinco is banned from importation. I still managed to get several older, pre-ban Norinco.

When I first saw thumbnail photo I thought "oh, excelent, another Zastava video". Before watching video till the end I could bet that's Zastava rifle. So many things on this rifle typical for Zastava. Shape of thumb safety, bolt handle shape and angle, bolt handle knob flat on the underside (I bet it is serrated as well), bottom plate release lever inside the trigger guard- typical for older production Zastava rifles... intermediate action... everything except iron sights looks exactly like Zastava. Too bad you don't have any Zastava any more to compare it. And since you mentioned, Zastava still produce M 70 hunting rifle, original Mauser sistem. I'm not sure about export to Canada and US though. Greetings from Serbia!

Hello Sir, made in China need I say more. I would question the metallurgy first off and secondly the workmanship/quality. Here's why I bought a Norinco M105 a bunch of years ago, only because I could not afford a Springfield M1A. Well now I know where all our pine Beatle kill trees go, yes the stock looked like it was made out of a scrap piece of 2x6 secondly it would not shoot straight only to find the barrel was indexed wrong. So off to the smith I go proper scope mount, new stock, all new US GI internals, head space checked and finally I had a gun that run and shot pretty good. In retrospect I should of saved my money and got the Springfield. My two bits worth All the best

If anyone is reading this looking at getting one, the Mauser bases from weaver (45m/46m) 48464 are the right hole placement but the screws they come with are too small. I’m all ears if someone knows of another part number that will work!

The wood is usually palonia . When sanded the stain goes away and it looks a bit like laminate but that’s because its a palm type tree, very strong but light, ive seen logs being moved in a wheelbarrow 😂

I assume that action with the floor plate was designed as a custom single shot target rifle. Would be great to see what you could do with it, custom stock, custom barrel etc. Can't beat the old Mauser design. Great action with that large claw extractor and controlled feed.

Honestly the Chinese do make good guns . I am a harsh critic of Chinese products but I will say Chinese made guns are not bad at all.

Some look down their noses at Norinco firearms but upon closer examination wherever they MUST be finely finished, they are; wherever they don't have to be finely finished, they aren't. I'd be shocked if the bore on your rifle weren't hard chrome plated because the predecessor to your rifle- the 334A- had a 24" chrome plated barrel, bolt and trigger. I found one in a cozy little gun shop something like ten years ago and the gunsmith said that the bedding job on it was terrible and that he had done a little work on it. I was intrigued and he gave me a deal on it. At he range I sighted in the iron sights, mounted a cheap scope, and sighted that in. During the process I noticed that while it was about as accurate as most American made entry level rifles it didn't feed smoothly, especially with round nosed bullets. I figured it was just a matter of a long break-in process. I had it glass bedded but noticed little improvement in accuracy. It shot especially well with Remington Core Lokts.

Excellent, balanced note Ken. Norinco knows what's what with guns. On a different note, China makes about 30% of cell phones and most of the manufactured items we buy. Pretty sure they could turn out Rigby quality if they wanted; and their SKSs are legend. I like realistic guns. They make them.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns A salesman in a store selling power tools said that a Chinese factory manager said that the Americans only ask how cheaply we can manufacture a product, but you know we can also make things of high quality, why doesn't anybody ask how high of quality we can manufacture an item with? I'm sure if you took the best craftsmen\gunsmiths from every ethnicity and told them to take their time and produce the best firearms possible-- money's no object-- that the products would be equally well made across the board. Just look at how the former Soviet Union produced lots of OK Baikals while Tskib Soo produced for the Communist Party bosses truly excellent hand made shotguns as good as the best of any custom other gunmaker.

I can't lie I was considering buying one of these when they were imported last month, noy necessarily for the rifle itself but I was curious if it would be a good base rifle for a wildcat conversion, especially for the price. Some M98's are getting pricey and Huskies too unless you get one a little beat up.

The 308 with norma ammo will print 2" groups at 400 yards,I just ordered another one to build a custom 7mm-3000 the recivers are incredibly strong and barrels are easy to head space

There is a certain charm in budget friendly rifles. I actually sold off all of my Sako 85's as I found them soulless. My absolute love now is a Ruger Scout. I'm not suggesting that the Ruger is in some way rough, as it clearly isn't, it's perfect in terms of manufacturing, but compared to the Sako is an honest workhorse.

I was shooting with a group of guys more than a few years ago. One fellow was shooting a Norinco CZ 527 clone in .223, and there was an incident with it. There was a shot, then a bunch of screaming and hollering. I thought someone got shot and ran to the scene, and found everyone gathered around this guy. The receiver exploded when he fired it. Bcause the Chinese rifle wasn't a CZ, it vented the gasses from the case down into the magazine and the first couple of cases looked to be penetrated with a hot jet and they partially detonated turning the magazine and stock into a grenade. The shooter, who was wearing eye glasses had burning powder embedded in his face, all around his glasses. Thank God he had those, or he most certainly would be blind today. You could see all the cylindrical burn marks from each piece of powder perfectly burned into his skin. To this day I'm not 100% sure what caused it, perhaps a double charge, maybe a blockage or case head seperation. But because of how it directed the gasses down from the bolt and not out the side, I've never been able to buy any Norinco product ever again. They rip off just about everything, but didn't give a damn about shooter safety.

Hi Jason - Thanks for sharing that incident and I hope your friend made a full recovery! Over the years I've seen some of these types of accidents involving various guns and even had a couple or three myself - so shocking and potentially tragic. People sent pics of other accidents - mostly with bolt actions but I saw a semi-auto and some single shots destroyed - and it is remarkable how the various designs handle the high gas pressures and cartridge and case fragments. For sure I understand the association between the elements present at an accident and the accident itself. A friend of mine was driving a certain type of car many years ago and was badly injured in a crash but survived - he refused to go near that type of car ever again. Anyway, when a case ruptured on me in a bolt gun the gas blew out the cartridges below, blew out the follower and spring, bowed the floorplate which then let go and flew to the ground. The wood around the bottom metal fractured and sections were blown out as well. The extractor and part of the bolt face were gone. The action held. I was using brass cartridges so they just opened up above the lifter and some burned and flared a bit since outside of the chamber they can't contain much pressure in the case. I was lucky not to have serious injuries - mostly just powder burns and I still have some brass fragments in one eye. I was lucky - such an excellent rifle - kept me alive. Some of the worst accidents I've seen were from barrel obstructions. Thanks again and all the best!

I have the Browning SA in 22 short made back in the early 1960s by FN, a Remington Model 24 in 22 lr made under license from Browning and the Norinco clone. They are all quality firearms with the Browning being the best of the lot, the Remington second and Norinco last. The price of each reflects the quality of each.

Hi Mike. Thanks for the reply and information. I guess i can thank Epps for having a scarce SA as it was advertized as 22lr when acquired 20 years ago. It is a Miroku made Browning and now cycles properly after adjusting the cartridge guide and replacing the mag feed spring due to a bungled fix of mine. I think my Slavia 620 pellet rifle is louder:) Hope to use again this fall for grouse in eastern ontario. Its so easy to carry so hope to find a Norinco. All the best!

Hello, I would take the bolt out and spray the action and bolt with brake cleaner; and the trigger mechanism as well. Let dry and repeat if still showing dirt. I wouldn't take anything apart. I know I'm dodging your question - sorry - I couldn't find a video. It's easy but unnecessary IMHO. Maybe I'll make a video. Cheers.

Speaking of Chinese rifles... I would like to produce a rifle in the style of the SKS, but chambered in 5.8x42mm (the PLA's main battle round.) He is in Canada. The 22lr jw20 copy is around a 200$ gun here. The norinco 334 is around 500$ here. Cheap for a new rifle as even a new savage axis is over 700. But all the great husqvarna surplus mauser 1600s can be had for 400$ +/-, and there are many chose from online. The biggest thing the 334 has going for it is the 308 chambering, for which ammo can be easily found in canada.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I think the Norinco name is poison in the US among gun regulators. Huge lots of inexpensive AKs, ammo, etc. got their attention on the Norinco brand a decade and a half ago. But this looks like a good rifle and a super alternative to the Savage Axis or Ruger American first rifle. At about $367 USD.

I agree Gary - they could turn out a Mauser rifle as good as any British maker - I'm not sure why they don't; maybe the market would not accept such a product - I'm not sure. On the other hand, Miroku of Japan could turn out Rigby style gems - and they don't either. Maybe I should look into a USOG special edition or something. All the best to you.
