I would replace it if it were my mower that I want to keep for years to come. But if I were fixing it to sell or on a budget, I would do what you did.

Excellent repair! I used to save self propel parts when the deck was rotted out, but after seeing the various styles, sizes, etc, I stopped holding onto them. I just cut out the broken trans and make it a pusher lol. I don't usually get many with a dead trans, it's usually belts or cables my way. I do have one with a busted self propel; the axle broke and you can pull it out of the trans on one side lol

Dude I was just working on a Honda HRR 216 transmission and thought it was just one of the bushings that was seized on the shaft because it was rusted on the shaft but now I think it needs a new transmission. Man those things suck working on!! Btw great repair!!

Wow, this was a lot of work for you. This turned out to be very informative to your viewers like me. I would have been inclined to replace the transmission, but I would also have been afraid that there would be no profit left in it. And the process of removing all of that plastic baffling brought back bad memories of of a mid-2000's MTD self-propelled 21" rear drive mower. I had to replace a few belts and 1 or 2 idler wheels in the rear drive system, and each time it involved a lot of similar effort to remove the plastic pieces.

thank you and yes having to replace the idlers is a real pain on that model

I ended up doing this sometime or other and I started taking stuff loose till I was worn out and then had to keep on going. What it was on I have no Idea but I finally got it fixed and assembled after several naps and probably several days. Good fix with no slop and plenty of grease! Got to have grease. I usually used Snapper 00 grease but it's been renamed now but Tractor Supply carries it. 'Cotton Picker Spindle Grease' I think it's called now. Happy weekend!

's thebit I found. You can get it online but if that's local you ought to be able to hit them up with that title and get it. I got 2 bottles and then gave everything away but I'm sure somebody can use it eventually. That's what Snapper used in all their old riders and gear boxes on the walk behinds.@@HomeGaragechannel

Nice job! All you need to reverse the drive gear is a simple everyday drift punch though, nothing special. I’ve done it a number of times in the past when I only had one type and needed the other. Problem is you have to remove the axle to slide it off and flip it around, so I’d do exactly what you did. That poor old Quantum sounds whooped, about the only way to kill them is to run them without oil.
@HomeGaragechannel
@HomeGaragechannel Жыл бұрын
I thought the same but I felt as though the pin was an interference fit and even thought the punch would have worked, I like the idea of the press better. And yes the engine is a bit knock but as long as it has oil, it'll last.
@matthewwearsch242

Don't need a press simply a punch the same diameter of the pin and a hammer

Recommendation answers “it depends.” It depends on if you are a cheapskate like you, and I am. If not, then the answer comes down to the cost of the parts and materials (and sometimes time). There is a threshold and it is always moving because there is a second time variable. And this one is based on my situation at that moment related to the events currently happening and what is planned for the near and far future. Like you, I would have tried the same repair process due to the cost of the transmission. Again, thank you for your shared hobby.

I briefly faced this question with my riding mower this past summer. I need a new transmission for it. Do I replace the old transmission or rebuild or get a new machine. I opted to replace the fluid, and come early spring after the snow melts and before mowing season, I'm replacing the transmission. In my case it was the initial cost of a new machine, plus the attachment(s) that conveniently don't fit the older attachments I own. What you did was just fine. yes you took a lot of time, but you got some good videos and made a lot of people happy.

I have the same mower but mine is front-wheel drive. But I have a Husqvarna cz4817 zero turn with a Kohler command 17 its run fine since I've had it but now it runs for about 5 minutes and when I take the air filter off after using white smoke slowly comes out of the intake, started doing that yesterday and also I have to give it a little bit of starting fluid then it runs fine for about five minutes then slowly dies, has a new carburetor. thanks

@@HomeGaragechannel, I just saw your comment lol. When I got it it didn't run it had an oil leak from the exhaust, i looked up why and it said carburetor weird but ok. Then I drained the leftover oil came out watery but I put in new oil and new carb it ran fine for probably a month. Then did that so I stopped riding it for a while and I used it heavily for a job for a guy and ran fine. But it only starts if you give it just a little bit of starting fluid any ideas of why it starts with starting fluid? Thanks

Sometimes you have to do the math and think about it. It's pretty easy to accidentally spend more than the value of the finished mower if you aren't careful. I try to avoid mowers with "loose" transmissions for that very reason.

Got a Snapper that had no tranny fill/breather plug and was full of leaves. Cleaned it out but had to get another pinion gear because the gear and bearing were shot. Worked fine till I had to get rid of it. Put a kawasaki motor on it instead of the Briggs. That was interesting. Ride that bike!
