He even lied about having failed high school and only having read 1 book in his life. He had a very negative opinion about Bill Maher and other such comedians that play at being intellectuals and “modern day philosophers” and wanted his act to give the opposite impression of that.

My favorite explanation of his comedy style was that he carried himself like he was trying to make himself laugh first and foremost, and everyone else was an afterthought. If his joke made him laugh, it was a success in his mind. He had complete and total faith in his own sense of humor.

It was well known in the showbiz world, that Norm had an IQ of about 150. Dude had some smarts, but didn't lord it over people like others would have. Instead, Norm played the average Joe. He was the "Columbo" of the comedy world. He intentionally played the simpleton, when really, he was the smartest guy in the room. He just never felt the need to show it. He graduated High school at 13 years old.

Saw Norm in Vegas about 2 years before his death....laughed with tears rolling down my face for an hour and a half. The man was a comic genius! His last laugh on everybody was not letting anyone know that he was very sick, just kept his friends and fans in stitches until the end. RIP Nirm

Polo… I came to follow your channel during your Tool reaction era - and I’ve stayed because you are absolutely the BEST at this sort of thing. I loved Norm MacDonald as a child… and up until he passed. What an enigmatic character. He was actually a beautiful man and the best friend to those who were closest to him. You should look up Bob Saget interviews speaking about their friendship and how Norm was with his kids. Norm is a bit of a mystery - even the indescribable way he made us laugh.

There's a story about someone needing audio of a crowd gasping, and someone from SNL said they had the perfect audio recording. It was from a practice taping of SNL and Norm said Woody Allen is dating again, and a picture popped up of the famous young Vietnamese girl in a war torn street. The audience audibly gasped. Needless to say, that one didn't make it on the air.

Look, Norm's favorite human was David Letterman who gave him his first TV appearance. He admired Dave because Dave was smart enough to know that the audience doesn't want a host who acts like they're smarter than everybody. Norm has read a lot more than six books. In fact I'd be surprised if he was more acquainted with the library than me, and I spent my whole life in them. He's probably more well read than any of us. (Old chunk of coal), please! I was really bored in a hotel for 3 weeks for work to the point where I decided to watch a Norm MacDonald stand up special. 3 minutes in I actually felt bad for how much he was bombing until he delivered the punchline and I could not stop laughing for a good 15 minutes. I had to pause the video until I could recover. There is something magical about him.
