god man, the dynamic between these two was magical. Every time Norm had an appearance on any of Conan's shows through the years, he always produced the best "late-night talkshow guest interview" content anywhere, on any network, against any other late night show, period. Conan brought the best out of Norm, and their chemistry worked perfectly together. Some of Norm's best and widely known jokes (like the moth joke, which was totally improvised by Norm on the spot) came out of a Conan appearance. I just wish we had so much more content with these two guys (plus Andy, of course) together, but hey, at least we have comedy gold recorded for us to watch.

Didn't bomb at all. Norm doesn't always do jokes for the uproarious crowd laughs. The joke is, if you get norms brand of comedy, that norm thinks the silence is hilarious. @HigherPlanes-Carson used to do a character called Carnac The Magnificent,a psychic that would occasionally make reference to yaks and camels(I could explain the context but it would take too long).

Ahh, okay, thanks!
@ajpecanic8 жыл бұрын
It seems like Fordham1969 explained it well. Carson would occasionally make a yak joke, especially while doing Carnac. If you never watched any Tonight Show clips with Carson, you really should. There are some hilarious moments. If you like Norm on Conan, you should watch some Buddy Hacket clips with Johnny Carson. Always hilarious stories and jokes.

I love seeing Norm actually laughing at someone else. Conan's impersonation of Norm really made him laugh. Of course, he was basically laughing at himself, sooo....

Norm made a craft out of telling super ancient jokes from almost 100 year before and nails them with the most perfect delivery and timing. Not what he says but when he says it. No one else had this talent where he hid his ability and let it all out at the perfect moments.
@jimreily753810 ай бұрын
He didn't make that craft. He adopted it very well. It's a comedic technique that's been around since before Buddy Hackett. It's called a shaggy dog story. Norm was a master of them. Look it up on Wikipedia, it will explain the concept better than I can.

00:40 'But the ending...' Norm was about to explain that no matter how long he rambles during a joke, he ALWAYS ALWAYS has a GENIUS and solid punchline that makes the previous 5 minutes worthwhile and all the more hilarious.
@FanboyFilms6 жыл бұрын
The groan-inducing stupidity of the punchline usually makes you realize how much time you just wasted on Norm's story for no good reason, and the joke's on you. That's what's great about it. Or as Andy Richter once said, "it's like you took us on a five mile hike just to look at somebody's turd!"

Yes, In comedy and storytelling, this is called The Shaggy Dog story, Norm has this down to a precise art.
@jimreily753810 ай бұрын
@@David_DownsThank you. Seems like many people don't know what the shaggy dog story is, and how it's been used as a comedic technique for a very long time. I remember Buddy Hackett telling great shaggy dog stories on Carson. I'm sure they have even earlier masters.
