Conan once said one of the things that makes Norm so funny is just the “sheer audacity” he has to tell such silly simplistic, outrageously long jokes. The rest is his persona and delivery. You can tell he’s a highly intelligent yet unpretentious person. My favorite comedian always. RIP Norm.

The joke was Norm himself. Not caring, pushing, adding the right flavour, the lightness, simplicity and balls. That kind of perfect naive, sloppy, reperitive, almost childish delivery. People often don't get how that magic was perfectly meant.

after being a Norm fan for decades and watching many of these gems, i think I understand him a little better. It seems that Norm always had a subtile ‘Norm’ joke to himself, woven between the fibers of the actual ‘joke’ being offered, that he found funny, and prob wondered if anyone else would get. in this case, it was his use of big words in the farmers dialect that would have been above the farmer’s intellect in Norms mind. Brilliant.

I love Norm's stories. It may interest some of you to know that this joke is at least 30 years old, probably more. This is an old literary device called a shaggy dog. Not many people do them any more because it takes great patience and real talent, otherwise the story just falls apart. The story, like a shaggy dog, has layer upon layer of details (or shaggy hair) without much of a pay-off (or much of a dog). It's a hard trick to pull off. None were better than Norm.

Yep. My Dad heard this joke as told by an Aussie at a scientific conference in Melbourne back in the early 70s. Has been a family joke retold probably a 100 times in the years since then. Of course the Aussie version is filled with lots of “Ah mate”s. Telling it with the that Aussie accent just adds something special to it. Norm did an excellent job here though.

When Pete Barbutti told it did he say one of the pig's "saves" was the tractor rolling over on soft ground, pinning the farmer and the pig digging him out ? Also the very 1st time I heard it - it was a travelling salesman who broke down, going to the farmer's house. And (of course) he had a beautiful daughter -- so, automatically leading the listener into expecting some variation of a farmer's daughter or travelling city salesman joke. It was, and is, brilliant 🤣 Norm's enthusiasm in building it was just awesome !

it's sad to say that people who enjoy comedy over the next few years might never stumble upon the absolute legend that is Norm Macdonald. I've always loved watching him make presenters squirm in their seats.

This is one of my favorite jokes from years and years ago, it’s great hearing Norm tell it. 😄

So grateful to see all these HD norm clips after watching them all many times in varying degrees of horrendously lossy compression. Rest in Peace to the greatest

It's sad that Conan didn't release them until after Norm's death.

Watched it a 100 times before, know the punchline, know the whole godamn joke, but still at the end of the video realizing I have been smiling the whole video. That's Norm. the GOAT. Already miss this guy. 😢😢 "14th September 2021 was the worst day ever" - some Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivor.

Probably the greatest stand in comedian thus far. He burns time effectively and gets us all engaged and ends with a good laugh in the process.

@@tyronejustice9431 Exactly. All of these late night hosts should be ashamed of themselves. If they had any decency they wouldn't dare say his name after the way they treated him.

@@ChuckM0503 Even after the Leno and David Letterman thing, and the Leno and Conan thing, you people still think the host runs the show and calls the shots. Good grief..

“Yeah I don’t know who they are but Phil Hartman’s great.” Norm’s relentless honesty is what made him the greatest comedian ever. He doesn’t even think about it for a second he just admits he doesn’t even know anything about the musical guest on his own show 😂

Rest in peace, Norm. I will always remember you. Thanks for all the (continous) laughs and for helping with my abs at the same time. Legend.
