If you look at Norm from his early "'It's me, Bob!" stand-up days (which were funny in it's own right), to his SNL commentary/O.J. days, to his darker, more story-rambling Letterman/Conan appearances...you will see a comedian who has truly evolved. Most comedians have one type of schtick. Norm refined himself over the decades, and then he wrote a book that was a phenomenally great read.

This is from the mid-80s, just around the time that standup shows were taking off on cable. There's more to this routine, which you can find online. The story about smoking goes on to explain how his father caught him shooting heroin, "And me made me shoot the whole bag. That's how I got hooked on heroin..." and so on.

Norm was making stuff up, as per usual. This International Star Search had a different format from the U.S. version: There were ten judges, not four, with three contestants. I'd imagine they had a vote to decide the winner, rather than have the judges give each contestant a 1 to 4 star rating.

Norm lost to a Liberian comedian who called himself the Bushman. Fast-forward 22 years: A TMZ photographer calls a cleaning service and recognizes the guy who comes to the door. The Bushman now goes by Lahai Fahnbulleh, his real name, and says he still performs - but cleaning is his main gig, along with some nannying.

I remember Star Search from the 80s, while Norm technically bombed on SS he was still better than pretty much every other comedian. The only other comedian I ever saw on it that was even sorta kinda funny was Sinbad but he burned out fast and early.

Since those early days Norm has ultimately surpassed ALL of the other greats, Pryor, Hicks, Carlin, Rickles (he wouldn't admit to that one but he definitely did) and become the pinnacle of comedy in our generation & therefore in history

In the book Norm says that he starts his set off with the joke “how many of you own an answering machine” then he says that the audience didn’t laugh throughout his entire joke. He also says that he got 3/4 of a star out of 4. I wonder how much of this book is made up and how much is just completely remembered differently in his mind. You know?
