Sometimes it was the traditional location at the end of the joke, sometimes it came after, and sometimes they were sprinkled throughout the story he told during an otherwise mediocre joke. He took jokes that wouldn't be funny if anyone else told them and made them hilarious.

It’s right up there with “Doc, she’s choking.” I think Norm’s greatest talent was making people laugh at things they didn’t want to laugh at. It's the purest and highest form of comedy, to make someone genuinely laugh while also making them uncomfortable. He did it to Conan a lot.

It was never personal towards Andy. Conan’s sidekick could have been anyone - that person is the fall person for the jokes. Andy played it well for a while, but clearly it go to him and he took it personally. It wasn’t. That was part of Andy’s job really.. to be the fall guy.

If the show is fronted by a comic, and has his name in the title, and you appear every night, off to one side of him, you are his sidekick. A sidekick exists to be the butt of jokes. The fact that only one person honoured that convention doesn’t mean he was wrong. Norm was just keeping it real.

The big difference is Norm (and to a lesser extent Adam) are comedians, so they get it. Conan (and to a lesser extent Andy) are writers, so they get butthurt.
