At least in others performances it is that what happens. In addition, the libretto is clear about that. This performance exhibits breathtaking voices; unfortunately, this becoming almost universal way to dress the performers with funny/modern costumes... leaves much to be desired (in my opinion, of course). Opera is not only music (Orch. & singing) but it is theater/acting as well, and as such the costumes should transport us to the time when the drama is unfolding. But worse than that was (as I saw in an alive performance) wireless microphones stuck close to the singers mouth... I confess that NORMA, SAMSON ET DALILA, AÏDA, FAUST & MEFISTOFELE is my Pentalogy. The DVD with the last Opera, sung by Samuel Ramey in the title role (DVD, edited in 1989, with the alive performance from San Francisco Opera House, is out of this world). Sorry to bore you. Best wishes for 2021.

She asks Adalgisa to take care of her children in their wonderful duet. At the end Norma begs Oroveso NOT TO KILL THEM, since she is aware of how cruel the Gauls could be with those poor kids, whose only fault was to be born out of the illicit liaison between a priestess and a Roman.

Horrible modern staging and costumes that don’t go with the story at all. Bad vocals and technique. It looks like they may have had bad direction too. Caballe’s 1974 Norma at Orange, France should be required viewing by everyone who ever sees a performance of Norma. Believed by most opera lovers and experts to be perhaps the greatest performance of Norma ever, even Callas thought so.

Caballe’s orange performance was the greatest Norma, even Callas thought so. There voices makes one ache to hear Caballe Callas and other golden age singers. These modern uniforms take so much away from the performance, the chorus looks bored and out of character, and the bald baritone doesn’t look right or sound that great. She ddn’t even try to take the high note at all much less in pianissimo before Casta Diva started. sacrasm.
@kbhprinsesse4 жыл бұрын
@@MySensualWorld unfortunately Caballé's voice wasn't heavy enough for the part, and she couldn't honour its technical difficulties either. She couldn't trill. Comparing her to Callas doesn't make sense, no matter what Callas herself may have said.

Sorry but she does not pass the Casta Diva test. It is all about breath control, and she breathes too often. When you do that you loose the otherworldlyness of the aria. It is just another singer struggling to get through it. Compare this with Caballe, who nails it at the Bolshoi in 74 (on youtube) and you will see. This singer also tends to swoop up to notes rather than just hit them. I give her partial credit: some places she hits each of the fast notes but unfortunately she tends to slur them in most places hoping her vibrato will make them sound like separate notes. The rest of the cast is no better. A singer who can handle the coloratura sections of an opera is scarce beyond belief today. I am sorry to say that this is not the NORMA we have been hoping for. The last great Norma I know of was Caballe in the 70's. Even Sutherland had trouble with it (although not nearly as bad as this lady), and Sutherland didn't have the passion. Haven't seen Dessi do it. Maybe there is hope there. Okay, it's a tough role, maybe the toughest, and few are able to do it. But if you play in the big league you have to be judged by big league standards.
