I still remember flying out of Philly after visiting a friend. One of the TSA agents playfully asked, “Where are you off to now?” I could only say, “Uhhhhh home.” He looked at me funny, and I was afraid I’d done something wrong. He came back a few minutes later apologizing profusely because he thought I was someone else. We both had a good laugh after that.

Apparently that is a common question to see if there is a suspicious answer. On a flight last week, the agent asked where I was going. I took a few moments to answer as I wasn't expecting such a question. There was also something in my backback they could not get a clear view of so sent it through again. They would not tell me what it was that raised their curiosity.

I often fly to family and as I have plenty of my stuff there, I don't need luggage nor carry-on. That means a guaranteed pat down with lots of questions, one time they even took me to a little back room and were asking me to explain how I can travel without luggage nor carry-on and why I fly via Amsterdam to France, why not direct. Then he tried to trick me into asking stupid questions about geography trying to trick me into saying wrong places, locations I am going to. This happened twice so far. Pretty, pretty annoying.

Funny story. I'm a photographer and journalist and I keep my cameras in a carro on. I tell the TSA people exactly who I am and what I do and that they need to pull me aside to insect my equipment. I then show them every little item, pull lenses from cameras to show them they are cameras, etc.; then, being the wise ass I am, point out all the things they missed and should have looked at. For instance, the ink from a common Bic ballpoint pen written on paper will show up as nitro cellulose if your perspiration gets to the paper. That's because most jell inks are nitro cellulose based. Understand that TSA people at airports are not chemists and do not have a chemistry background, and therefore are overly suspicious as they are trained to be so. These, for the most part, are just people doing their jobs. It is also to be noted that being completely cooperative or over cooperative will throw up a red flag. And if ypu point out something they missed that they should have looked at more carefully, they will generally wonder who the hell are you. Lol!

I got my first pacemaker 20 years ago. At the time I was instructed by my doctor to always request hand pat down as the metal detectors at the time could be problematic. On my second or third flight my pat down was from a gay agent who offered to take me to a office for more privacy. I told him that I was fine with standing in front of everyone. Another time I was at a major busy airport where I had been advised previously to go to the crew line. When I got there and mentioned the pacemaker pat down they said it would be a few minutes as there were only women working that location and they would have to go get a man. They smiled but said sorry when I stated that I had no problem with one of them doing the pat down. The new body scanners are not an issue but I tell them ahead of the scan as it does show up.

@@AP-yd1wz for legal reasons. It just takes one person to say something negative, and in our culture of zero tolerance people can lose their job unnecessarily. It's not worth the risk. Same thing in schools. Teachers can't touch students; not even when a kindergartener wants a hug. Any touch is forbidden, because one person says I saw Mrs hugging Johnny and now Mrs is facing a lawsuit, jail time and is unemployed. Instead, teachers give air hugs, air high fives and other positive signals from across the room. Zero tolerance has gone way too far.

@@Ninjanimegamer I'm sure it is because of that. My point was more sarcastic than anything else. It's just the most contradictory thing ever.

My friend had a stroke and was partially paralyzed on her left side. I don’t know if it was because of her wheelchair and couldn’t get into the scanner, but whatever the reason she was forced to stand on her one working leg while they patted her down. Because she wore a mastectomy bra, the hand scanner alarmed causing further embarrassment. They took her to a private area but would not allow her husband or any family member to come with them while they removed her bra to make sure it wasn’t dangerous. She felt both violated and humiliated. This was just after 9/11 and she’s flown since then but it was an awful experience for her.

Security is a theater. About 10 years ago, my wife and I were traveling to the Northeast the day before a major snowstorm was supposed to hit there. Instead of taking off belts and shoes, and going through the body scanner, everyone was processed through the metal detector. WHY? Oh, because they wanted to move passengers through security faster? My daughter from the time she was 5 until she hit her early 20s was constantly selected for ‘special screening.’ Her name seems to have been in some database so that when she went thru a line they constantly told her (sometimes looking embarrassed they had to pat down an 8 yr old) she needed this. I did a google name search to try and see if I could figure out why. There was an IRA terrorist that had her name back in the 1980s. That’s the best I could figure out. Whatever it was, it wasn’t random. She was pulled out of line at least 75% of the time she flew. It seems to have finally stopped the last few years but it went on for at least 15 years.

You can avoid many of these with PreCheck, but not a guarantee. You never know when you are going to encounter a TSO with an attitude and JFK has many of these. Not addressed in the video, but good to note/be aware of items which will cause your bag to get kicked out for a TSO to check. It would be nice, however, if TSA had enough officers available to do this quickly and clear what they can so that everyone in line does not get delayed when the belt is overloaded. Know that if you have SSSS on your boarding pass to expect additional screening before you board.

@@davidchilds9590same here. Retired AF, current civil service employee with a clearance, and love flying as an FAA licensed private pilot. I joined TSA Precheck and EVERY SINGLE TIME I’m selected for “random” extra screening. I’m quiet and respectful, dress in business casual to travel, know and follow all the rules, but still I’m “randomly” selected Every Time from the precheck line. Could never get an agent to tell me why. I finally got tired of the harassment (there’s no other word for it) and having to re-pack my ENTIRE roll-aboard after they’ve pulled everything out, every time. I told my boss I’m done flying. If I can’t drive there I’ll dial in remotely to the meeting. I’ve had it with TSA and their thugs. I could go into more stories, including being hassled while traveling in uniform… I REALLY wish I could get an explanation why a retired military, Uncle Sam employed, FAA licensed pilot with a security clearance is such a threat to the TSA.

I've got a full, long beard, so I'm always randomly selected for more careful screening. Once I accidentally had an X-acto knife in my carry-on. Despite the more careful screening, I got through the screening twice without any problem. I didn't learn of my mistake until I got home and was unpacking. I really should have had an uncomfortable interview with the nice security people in a back room. Not that I'm complaining... Still, it does make me question how useful these security checks really are.

Normal behaviors? Even with a TSA Pre-check, my wife has twice, in a row, been the recipient of "SSSS" on her Boarding Passes. WTH TSA? Why did she go through the whole process of a background check, etc? $100 for what, TSA? For those of you who are unaware of what "SSSS" mean on your Borading Pass, it means you are pulled aside to a room where you receive a full-body pat down, shoes removed, etc. SSSS stands for Secondary Security Screening Selection. I guess that's what $100, a photo, fingerprints and backgroud check buys you.

So for all the people complaining about the TSA, and I realize they're not perfect, a question: Would you prefer that the TSA would let people get on the plane with you without trying to be sure there aren't any dangerous items on board, simply because they don't want to inconvenience you? I wouldn't. I appreciate any extra security measures, even if it is (as some seem to believe) only a show to dissuade people from trying to smuggle things onto the plane I am flying on.

And then cop an attitude and act like the traveler is the problem when they get upset that you are wasting their time and possibly making them late for a flight? This is the age of big data. Run the stats on the various 'groups' who fly out of your airport. When was the last time a white woman over the age of 45 committed any kind of violent crime? Why harass them if they are a safe traveling subgroup? Because that is the goal of the police state.....to intimidate and harass and pretend like they are doing you a favor whilst doing so.

The battery thing makes sense. In Canada airlines prohibit any battery or battery operated device in checked luggage. Mainly because items like shavers etc have been found to be accidentally turned on during the flight. If it’s several hours it can potentially overheat in the luggage compartment Another thing to note…. Different countries have different rules. For example, shoes off in the US but not in Canada.
